Exercise on Thanksgiving?
You mean besides jogging my memory while running through an old recipe book? |
My Dad always said...."When I feel the urge to excercise...I lay down til it passes"....
|
Hi jetset. I stick with my exercise routine - I have to, b/c I refuse not to eat all the good food around this time of year! I won't be exercising Thanksgiving Day, but I did this weekend, and will today, Tues. and Wed.
I bake a LOT this time of year - all sorts of great stuff that I don't eat any other time of the year - diferent kinds of fudge (white chocolate and Oreo Mint), truffles (Baileys, Kahlua, Chambord and white chocolate cinnamon), and at least 10 batches of cookies. I freeze the cookies and in December we have several dessert parties - I defrost a bunch of cookies, make some Raspberrry Zinfandel punch and we're reading for company! I work at the local Y and we have a weigh in starting now. All members who lose weight or maintain their current weight after Jan. 1 receive a T-shirt. I am surprised and proud of how many members achieve this goal. |
My main form of exercise is figure skating and the rink will be closed Thanksgiving Day but I'll go back Friday morning...before the shopping excursion :-)
|
If I was home, I would be on our treadmill. But my Thanksgiving day exercise this year will consist of walking down airport concourses and lifting my rollaboard into overhead compartments.
|
I usually don't, but this year my gym is opened until 1, and I'm not cooking. There is a 90 minute cycle class from 8:30 -10 which I plan on taking. The instructor has promised gifts and prizes (I'm so easily bribed!)
|
We play golf every Thanksgiving morning and have for years. About 40 members of my family play and we get quite a workout.
|
Since I am out of town on Thanksgiving Day, no I don't. Thursday would normally be a workout night for me, but I just skip one that week. I will get back to the gym on Saturday and start working off the extra couple of pounds from Thursday. Luckily, I don't have quite the appetite I used to have. Christmas is harder for me than Thanksgiving because it involves more days of visiting family and doing other things outside the norm.
|
My exercise days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday so unless they move Thanksgiving to one of those days, I've got it covered. My gym is open 24-7 - the exercise bicycle and weights are in my basement.

Great question...
My daughter and I go to the Turkey Trot in our city, an easy 5K race that is fun way to get exercise. I also walk the dog as far as I can before all the turkety aromas staart to drive me crazy. Anne |
Absolutely! No need for a gym...there is outside as well as my make-do gym and treadmill here. I am doing the Seattle 1/2 Marathon a few days later so have to stay limber.
|
Of course, but then I don't exercise at the gym. I find that life in general holds enough exercise. Thanksgiving is that much busier.
|
Yes, but of course! With our great S. Fla weather, I always take my morning walk, cause it makes me energized to deal with THE dinner ;-).
|
I don't usually but I plan to this year - trying to lose a few pounds before our trip to Maui on Dec. 15!
|
Karens... wow- is there any chance you might post the chambord fudge recipe? I have a friend coming over this week who is a true chocolate/fudge person, and this would probably impress her, as well as my other guests. Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving, J.

The exercise I'll be getting is in dashing about trying to assemble the various dishes we are taking to the family dinner. We'll be in Napa which can be brisk and clear. Sometimes various ones of us take a walk after dinner but that's it for moving on T Day.

You can't be serious... exercising on Thanksgiving morning!! I just shlepped two supermarket carts full of groceries and veggies. Cooking the soup, making the pies and muffins..The taking down of dishes, washing floors on my hands and knees... putting a 20 pound turkey in the oven, cutting, peeling, lifting heavy stock pots. Up down, up down...take down, put back up, set the table, polish the silver, make a list so I don'tforget anything and make additional cranberry relish....Then load the dishwasher, empty, put dishes away, set the table for desserts, clean up from desserts and fill dishwasher....and all the time be pleasant to my guests.....fall into bed and pray I can walk in the morning with being on my feet for two days.I LOVE IT!!! The day I like best is the day after Thanksgiving when I can truly sit down and nosh... Oh no... I've invited people over for lunch on Saturday... oh well

A few 12oz. curls late in the AM makes for an outstanding holiday workout.

Our City Community Recration Center has a terrific gym, indoor pool, spa etc. I was amazed that they will be open Thanksgiving from 8-2pm. I typically do my tough cardio and weight training on Monday, Wed. and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday, I either walk or ride the stationary bike. I think I will pop in early Thursday and ride the bike or walk the track.
I see many seniors in our Center ages 70+ working out who look terrific and it motivates me. Once you get in the habit of excercising and scheduling time for it, it becomes second nature. I actually feel better and sleep more soundly when I make it a daily activity. |
placeu2, :-)
