Today's Update: <BR> <BR>Honolulu Advertiser--State public health officials are encouraged by an apparent slowdown in confirmed dengue fever cases, particularly in East Maui. <BR> <BR>"The news coming back from East Maui is that we've fought a good battle and maybe we're winning, and maybe we've contained this," said Gary Gill, the state's deputy director for environmental health. "But that's not to say the war is over ... this is a low-intensity conflict that flares up in different hot spots around the state." <BR> <BR>

Good quote, if I may say so myself ;) <BR> <BR>We know quite a bit about dengue by now, and while we are all doing all we can to eradicate mosquitoes in our bromeliads, etc., the number of actual dengue cases in Hawaii is statistically very small. And fortunately the situation seems to be getting under control. Hawaii doesn't have a very good mosquito host for the virus, as opposed to Tahiti and Puerto Rico where they have different species. So, the best advice is "no panic" and wear mosquito repellent. <BR>

I don't think we need to worry about dengue fever. I remember Jon Hall, Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and other stars all got dengue fever in their jungle movies, and they recovered. Of course, dengue fever is a black and white illness, now with all the movies in technicolor, things may be different. I remember all those guys in bed sweating like crazy, while their girl friends all mopped their fevered brows and wept until the guys got better and caught the bad guys. Doggone it, I also remember Joan Crawford in "Rain" coming down with dengue fever, while Claude Rains blathered over her prostrate form and spewed out his beautiful English monologue. Boy, do times change. DOWN WITH TECHNICOLOR!

There is a recent update at:<BR>http://starbulletin.com/2002/01/09/news/story3.html<BR><BR>Gee, I wonder why I haven't seen a word about this on the Fodor's site itself, Frommers.com or the NY Times travel section online. <BR><BR>(sarcasm)<BR><BR>Yes, I realize it's probably a very small risk but the public still has a right to know the facts and make their own choices.

It doesn't sound any worse than the West Nile Virus found in the Northeastern US and spreading to the rest of the country.
