Another park just closed, Lesourdsville Lake in Monroe, Ohio. An RV store, bought it, and it are turning it into a RV lot.

Rockaways' Playland, Queens, New York City - had my first ride on a roller coaster, loved eating the greasy French fries that came in a paper cone with a wooden fork. The whole family would go on Thursday (?) nights to see the fireworks. I went to Coney Island a couple of weeks ago just to see if I could find a place that made the French fries the way I remember them from Playland but I didn't have any luck.

Ooh i remember Playland from when i was little....that was fun :)
Also Rye Playland, upstate... |
I'm casting another vote for Action Park in NJ!
What a mess that place was! The wave pool had a rip current -- you'd always see people trapped in the back of the pool. And once I got on a water slide -- no warnings, no you-must-be-able-to-swim signs -- and halfway down the slide ended and there was a 15 foot plunge into the water! Love it. Travelenthusiast -- the park became Mountain Creek, a water park by summer and ski resort by winter. |
And yet another for Action Park. Loved the Alpine slide and the kamikaze water slide. So is Mountain Creek the same park with a different name?

Suzie back in 2004 mentioned the NutTree in Vacaville, CA along I-80.
Anyone that remembers the NutTree might be interested in the article in the Vacaville Reporter..the website is www.thereporter.com. Scroll down to the Business Section. The NutTree is being brought back to life and the train that Suzie mentioned will once again be there. And PlayLand in SF..I sure have so many wonderful memories of PlayLand. Good times! |
There is a rumor going around that Six Flags is going to shut down, or sell 6 of there parks. The 6 parks are Six Flags Darien Lake, Six Flags Waterworld , Six Flags Elitch Gardens, Wild Waves and Enchanted Village, Six Flags Splashtown, and Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor. Do you think this could happen?
|
The Six Flags CEO announced in a conference call to investors last week that the company has *considered* selling off those parks. As far as I know, nothing has been decided yet. But I'm sure some developers are going to make bids for the properties. Anything can happen.
I monitor the rec.roller-coaster newsgroup and there's a healthy discussion of the topic going on right now. You can access the group through Google Groups if you don't already have a newsgroup reader. |
Action park was great. We used to go when the park was closed, grab one of those alpine slides and walk up the ski slope and ride the track. The wrecks were always spectacular and painful. Tiring but free. Catskill Game Farm is still open. As for french fries, I remember getting the fries with the wooden spoon and cone at Rye Playland...but I belive Nathan's fries are very similar in look and taste, which is obviously still open!

Does anyone know about an indoor amusement park in Tenn?
My DD and DH was told about it while on line for a ride at Kings Domionion but I can't find any info about it. Thanks Melissa |
It's good to see so many MA people remember the parks of my youth: first one I ever went to was Whalom, and Canobie Lake, and Riverside...
But Lincoln Park holds a special place in my heart, probably because as a teenager we'd go a few times every summer, and it turns out those years were just before it closed... It was skanky and cool and wierd all at the same time. I must be perverse, but I love the way the coaster looked until recently (when a fire wrecked a lot of what remained), a white skeleton rising above the thick undergrowth. I'd heard Shaw's wanted to put in a Super Shaw's supermarket, and now they're talking about a large housing project... Spinner Publications out of New Bedford made a book and a video, Lincoln Park Remembered (http://www.spinnerpub.com). They also sell a souvenir mug! And there's a Wikipedia entry on Lincoln Park, imagine that. Do you remember the drive-in just up the hill/east on Route 6 in Dartmouth? It's where the Wal-Mart is now. What a shame. |

I, too, have fond memories of Marineland, Busch Gardens (loved the bird shows), Lion Country Safari & probably most endearing of all...Santa's Village located in the tiny town of Sky Forest,up in the San Bernardino mtns. I worked there as a teenager in 1976-77! As an elf wearing green tights, funny shoes & a pointy hat w/ bells! Wow, soooo long ago. If I'm not mistaken, the place is still in operation??? Who else can recall way back when Disneyland used the A thru E ticket book to go on the rides? E-tix were always the best rides & you never had enough of them in the book, always had to purchase more (or at least my parents did!)

Mine is Hunt's Pier, Wildwood, NJ. www.funchase.com www.mrboardwalk.net www.darkinthepark.com www.huntspier.com all have info about the late, great Hunt's Pier. The only ride left standing is the 1960 PTC Golden Nugget Mine Ride dark ride coaster which has bee closed and shuttered for several years and is owned by Morey's Pier. Also Castle Dracula, Wildwood 1977-2001. It burned down Jan 2002. Dark in the park has more info on it. Dark in the park also has video of Hunt's Pier from the 80's before they (the new owners 1986-1990) tore down half the rides. The pier was run by William C. Hunt (passed away July 1970), Guy Hunt (passed away 1970's) William "Bud" Hunt (passed away 1991) and Vincent Kostek (passed away this June 11) between 1957-1985 then it was sold to investors headed by David Kami of Wildwood. They made the unfortunate decision in 1989 to demolish the 1957 Flyer roller coaster and other rides for new ones. The pier repopened between 1996-1998 as Dinosaur Beach then closed and became a go-kart park with the shuttered Mine Ride.

Tolchester in Maryland; Riverview in New Jersey. Sadly both are VERY LONG gone but certainly not forgotten.

Hey Rosiegirl, West View Park was once home to the Bill Tracy built 2 story Haunted House ride built in 1963 which was bought by Erieview Park in Ohio around 1978-79 after West View closed in 1977. It operated at Westview as "Fright Zone" in a one level format from 1980 until te end of this season when the owner of Erieview decided to close the park. It looked like the end of the line for Fright Zone but it was auctioned off and the winner sold it to a park fan who is relocating it to Conneaut Lake Park to be operated possibly next year. Other Bill Tracy built rides include the Haunted House built 1962 at Trimper's, Ocean City, MD and the walk-through Pirate's Cove. Waldameer's Whacky Shack ride and Pirate's Cove walk-through. There used to be a one level Whacky Shack built by Bill Tracy in 1963 at Hunt's Pier, Wildwood, NJ but it disappeared ten years ago when the pier was being remodeled by new owners. Also Bill did props for other Hunt's rides like Golden Nugget Mine Ride, Pirate Ship Skua (removed 1989), and Jungleland (removed 1989). Dorney Park had a great collection of Bill Tracy built dark rides, all gone now. There are some Bill Tracy Whacky Shack rides out west in Texas, Kansas (Joyland), and Oklahoma (Bells). Laff in the dark has articles about all of them. There are some parks which were or are in danger of shutting down, Joyland Wichita was one of them, the former owner Stan Nelson bought the park back and resold it, and the new owner reopened the park but reserves the right to bulldoze the park and build apartments on the site if it doesn't make money. Myrtle Beach Pavilion closed forever after 58 years, who knows what will happen to the 1978 Funni-Frite Haunted Hotel ride there. Now MB will only have one park left, Family Kingdom since other parks like a go-kart park and one other one are closing, too. Erieview in Ohio closed too after years and sold off all the rides. William's Grove Park in PA near Harrisburg is in danger, too since it's up for sale. Even Funtown Pier in Seaside Heights, NJ wanted to scrap the park and build condos on the site but hopefully it won't happen. There are a bunch of other small parks that closed in the past several years but can't think of them now.

Not an amusement park, but in the same nostalgic vein, the Catskill Game Farm where many a child fed reindeer, closed at the end of this season, as did the amusement concession on Steel Pier in Atlantic City.

Old Chicago was really cool when I was a kid.
Did not last long....guess they just could not draw the crowds. I also recall Honey Bear Farms near Lk Geneva. I don't recall much, except that I loved it when my Grandma would take me there. Not really a "park" with rides more like an attraction. |
bagsarepacked- One time I brought my two oldest kids to Old Chicago and do you remember mood rings? Well, my mood ring actually cracked on that upside down roller coaster. It's funny the things you remember.
I remember the big Genie's face on the Fun house at Riverview, just as if it was last year, instead of 40 plus years ago. And the gate at the top of the Bobs. They could not do at least half of those rides today as they set up then, because of the liability issues. |
