Just noticed that no one had mentioned Olympic Park in Irvington NJ I believe. I was very young and my parents are deceased so I can't verify the town. Anyhow I can still imagine the giant wooden roller coaster which seemed to be constructed right next to the street.

Also, Jungle Habitat in N. Jersey...we still have an 8X10 photo on our wall of an employee with a monkey on his shoulder. The man's face is really one of surprise as the monkey had jumped on him as we were driving by.

Not closed too long now, I have fond memories of my newlywed weekends at Boardwalk And Baseball just outside of Orlando, FL. They had the greatest midway games that you could play for a quarter (as opposed to dollar games everywhere else)! Still have my personalized coffee cup!

travelenthusiast - WOW! It's been almost a year since I posted on this thread. I grew up in the Willow Grove area, as well as my husband, and we only remember Willow Grove Park. We have since moved to the Pocono region and have heard of the park in Moosic, last known as Rocky Glenn Park, which is now also defunct. Peace.

HI,
Any body here remember Playland Park in Houston,TX?

My family lived on site from 1942 til 1952. I worked for my father in concession stand until I was 22 yrs old.

Maui:
Does anyone know what used to go on near the airport in Maui, Hawaii? The defunct ride (roller-coaster?) that is still half-standing is a picture lost - I wanted to go back to check it out and didn't make the time.

To Kwoo: Catskill Game Farm in NY was still open 3 years ago when I was in the area.

Well no one here is from Miami or they might have mentioned the Serpentarium, Parrot Jungle, or Crandon Park Zoo (and skating rink). Of course we also liked the Seaquarium.

I live in Illinois, near St. Louis, and my parents used to talk about an old amusement park right across the Chain of Rocks bridge called the Chain of Rocks Fun Park, I believe. It was demolished before I was born, but apparently it was THE place to hang out for awhile. It sounds like it was a lot of fun.

HI Dixiegirl,

Riverside Park is still there, sort of. It's now a pretty big Six Flags, I think it's the largest amusement park in New England. And in case you care it's in Agawam, MA.

Sorry to see Gingerbread Castle is no longer viable. We used to go there every year and I have pictures of myself in the witch's cauldron from ages 4 through 13.

What a Great Thread! Thanks, drewbari!!!

I grew up in Ohio, as several of you did, and my father's company picnic was at a small park in Canton, called Meyers Lake..it was a wonderful place, and we went every year, and parked under the shade trees behind the roller coaster. My mom always got up early that day and fried chicken for the picnic we would eat there, along with potato salad, chips and homemade date bars... The park had some of the most wonderful rides for a young child, including a hanging glider type ride that went out over the lake, and a "Laugh in the Dark" ride that had a Laughing Lady that always scared the pants off me! I can still hear that chilling soundtrack in my mind..luckily the company sponsored ice-cream and orange drink stand was nearby...

Dog Beach in DT Chicago (Near North Side)

There's a little patch of beach that's fenced off. There's a bunch of dogs running, playing, mating, fetching other dog's balls.

Its a lot of fun if your a dog, a dog owner or just passing by.

Ditto - Dog Rock. Chgo rox.

Thanks for bringing back this post, and especially for the memories of Bob-Lo Island amusement park between Windsor and Detroit.

For those that still remember, here's a web site:

Sadly, you can add AstroWorld in Houston to the defuct park list. After 30 years, AstroWorld closed at the end of this season in October. The land became more valuable than the revenue taken in. Everything will be torn down and many of the rides will be sold and moved to other Six Flags parks. The land will be sold for housing and business development. And just like that, a significant part of the childhood of everyone growing up in Houston beomes a bittersweet memory.

Do any Minnesotans remember Queen Anne Kiddyland in Excelsior? (suburban Mpls.) I esp. liked it because I am named Ann; as a kid that made me feel oh, so special!!

Our family's favorite defunct park was EUCLID BEACH in Cleveland. The park closed around 1968, a couple years before I was born. But my dad went there in his teens years, and then he and my mother courted there before they were married. We bought my dad a three-disc set of EUCLID BEACH PARK DVDs for Christmas this year, and the whole family has enjoyed watching them. There are some great vintage film clips and photos in the documentaries.

bigtyke mentioned LEGEND CITY in Phoenix -- I have a brochure from the park, not sure which year. I was going to scan it and send it to ThemeParkBrochures.com, but have never gotten around to it! My dad visited the park in the late 60's.

hauntedheadnc mentioned the LAND OF OZ in Beech Mountain, N.C. I have photos of a visit to the park site from 2002 at http://imageevent.com/xrae/landofoz

hauntedheadnc also mentioned an "old west" themed park near Chimney Rock Park in N.C. I think you might be thinking of "Ghost Town in the Sky" in Maggie Valley N.C., closer to the Smoky Mountains. (Chimney Rock is near Asheville). Ghost Town has been closed for a couple years. A developer was thinking of turning the Ghost Town land into condos, which seems to be a trend of late (see Six Flags Astroworld's recently announced closing). A November article from the Smoky Mountain News at http://www.smokymountainnews.com/iss...host_town.html mentions that Ghost Town may be open again by Memorial Day 2006. So our family has crossed fingers that Ghost Town will reopen. It's a family favorite, especially with the smaller kids.

AprilA mentioned Tweetsie RR possibily losing its land lease. I hadn't heard anything about that (surprising since it's a somewhat local park), but a quick Google revealed this article on the topic: http://www.wataugademocrat.com/2005/.../tweetsie.php3. I was at Tweetsie in October and the park seemed to be all business as usual. I'm hoping they can get their lease issues worked out, because loss of the park would be a blow for the local economy.
