Day trips or weekend getaway suggestions from NYC...

I live in NYC and love being tourist in my own backyard... however, it's always fun to escape a little (Bershires, Bucks County, Nyack/Piermont, Stowe, Newport, Tarrytown, Reinbeck area, etc)... just for the day or weekend. please share your favorite places within driving distance from NYC for a day/weekend trip. also, please share your favorite B&B, hotels, restaurants, shops, or unforgetable views...

The Homestead Inn in Greenwhich CT is a great place. We've stayed there twice and loved it both times. They have a superb restaurant. Greenwich is like another world; it's hard to believe it's so close to NYC.

Sounds like a travel writer with bad spelling looking for suggestions

jill Aug 15th, 2001 09:16 AM

sounds like you have nothing better to do than criticize. nobody asked you to check grammar or spelling!! <BR> <BR>Michelle, have you ever tried the Bucks County area in PA? it's a wonderful day trip. they have cute stores and restaurants. the Bucks County Playhouse always puts on great productions. have fun!

How about hopping on the train to Williamsburg? <BR> <BR>I often take the overnight train coming down to NYC from Albany, connecting to the #67, which leaves NY at 2:10am arrive Wbg @ 10:25am. It's worth the extra for "business class" seating ..quieter, more comfortable, and you seldom have to share your seat with another passenger. <BR> <BR>In Williamsburg you can find motels within walking distance, or catch a cab or bus. <BR> <BR>Take the #66 train at 5pm to return home to NYC arriving at 12:41am <BR> <BR>(remove any "x" from my e-ddress to reply) -- rob <BR>

I would recommend going to New Hope, PA. It's a very cute town with craft shops, imported Indian clothing stores, and lots of psychics and witchcraft shops.

Try the Hamptons.....or Montauk. The north fork is nice for touring the winerys.

beenee Oct 26th, 2001 06:26 PM

after we spent some time in New Hope/Lamberville shopping, we discovered some charming places on the way home... Frenchtown, Milford, and Clinton. not a lot to do, but very charming... especially Clinton! historic river town... waterfall... and you can rent canoes... extremely picturesque.

For a spectacular view consider a day trip to Sam Point's located in the Shawangunk Mountains on rt. 52. It is about 90 or so miles from NYC. I haven't been there in years so I can't provide precise instructions but follow this route and you should find it. Take rt 17 north to exit 119 where you take rt. 302 to Pine Bush. At Pine Bush take rt. 52 west heading to Ellenville. Before reaching Ellenville you will be driving on the part of 52 that overlooks the valley below. Look for a sign indicating Ice Cave Mountain. Sam's Point is in that area

is there a flea market in the lambertville/new hope area? we are going to peddlers village and thought there was a flea market nearby. maybe its an antique market?

Laurie Oct 31st, 2001 10:26 AM

This will reply to RO: there is a flea market for antiques in Lambertville. I believe it is called Golden Nugget but I'm not sure. It can definitely be searched online. I have been there but not in awhile. I seem to remember it being open only on weekends & alot of people go there at 6:00am with flashlights!

laurie: thank you for the replay. is peddler's village nearby golden nugget?

topper Jan 2nd, 2002 05:28 AM

Please suggest winter getaways. Happy New Year!

We are taking a weekend and going to Rhinebeck NY-on the Hudson, about 2 hrs north of NYC.Staying at the Beekman Arms, going to Hudson, NY to do some antiquing,Millbrook- antiquing, dinner at the Le Petit Bistro in Rhinebeck and then home on Sun afternoon..Maybe tour one of the old mansions...It is close, and beautiful all times of the year.Happy 2002!

Cheryl Jan 2nd, 2002 06:13 AM

What about the Finger Lakes? Beautiful scenery, wineries, antique shops, lots of B&B's - many are listed on the register of historic places.

Although this isn't a winter suggestion, if you're ever in North Stonington, they have a tiny little public green that- it seems- is always deserted. There is this picturesque little footbridge and brook that leads back to an open quiet green. I found it was the perfect spot for a romantic picnic after an afternoon of visiting the southern Connecticut vineyards. <BR><BR>Also- the perfect oceanside town in the area: Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

If you want weekend in the Shawangunks, check out Lake Mohonk. It is near New Paltz for shopping, a tour of the oldest street in America (debatable) that is really wonderful, and then tour the wineries in the area. You can stay at Lake Mohonk or just visit there. Also, there is mountain climbing around. It is really breathtaking up there. I weekend in the Shawanagunks, so I am very hesitant about telling anyone about this treasure, lest it be overrun, but it is too great not to share.<BR><BR>Have fun wherever!

robbie Mar 2nd, 2002 06:11 PM

great suggestions... any more?

Just returned from a weekend in Lambertville/New Hope. Stayed at an historic inn- Lambertville House right in the center of Lambertville. It wasn't cheap but the rooms were very nice- gas fireplace/whirlpool tub- and we walked everywhere. There are a lot of nice galleries and restaurants. I would love to go back in the summer. There are a number of small wineries in the area and you can walk or bike along the canal plus many outdoor dining options along the river.

For a long weekend, you may want to consider Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. All are summertime trips and the money exchange is very favorable for Americans.

s Aug 25th, 2002 07:36 PM

<BR>Montreal is a tiny bit too far to go to for just a weekend, from NYC if you are driving.<BR>But for a 4 day trip or more it is great!<BR>The best time of year to go to Montreal is in the fall, driving through the Adirondacks at that time of year is the Best!

Must suggest Montauk NY, south fork of Long Island. Stay at Ocean Beach resort, ask for the oceanview corner rooms, you will have a private balcony over looking the ocean, short set of stairs to the beach. A glass of wine on the balcony at sunset is great. Then to eat, you can walk to the Shagwong for drinks and dinner, or if it is in season, Gosman's Dock has great food and is at the marina, their open air dining room opens out to the marina, you can watch the boats come and go. Also a great meal can be found at the Oyster Pond also open year around, can be a nice walk from Ocean Beach Resort. During the day go to the Lighthouse, walk around the rocks in front of the lighthouse, to a very nice beach, because of it locale it's alittle hard to get to. I grew up here and make this my weekend retreat especially off season. The motel has a heated pool and jacuzzi for winter time.

12 years ago my wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) and I spontaneously drove to Niagara Falls from Long Island at 4pm on a Friday afternoon. We got to our destination at midnight and spent all day Saturday and Sunday morning enjoying the Falls. Amazing trip.

NYGirl Aug 26th, 2002 08:09 PM

To "to Michelle"<BR>You were spot on with your Montauk ideas!<BR>SHagwon is great! so much good food! and the hotel is good, Gosmans, and don't forget the small restaurant on the dock called The Dock! Excellent! <BR>We rented a house on Ditch Plains Rd for years and spent many a night having dinner at the Dock and dessert at Ben & Jerrys across the street.<BR>Lunch at Gosmans is fun, but watch out for the seagulls, they are known to fight you for that french fry!<BR>

Mom Aug 27th, 2002 05:37 AM

We took the kids (teenagers) up to Mohonk last fall for lunch and hiking. We all enjoyed the trip. We live in central NJ and the trip took us about two hours. I would recomend it. I live in between Clinton and Lambertville and not to far from New Hope, PA. So I can also tell you that all of these towns are good to see. Clinton is small and you can spend half a day there. Happy travels.

David Aug 27th, 2002 06:04 AM

Michelle/nyc,<BR><BR>Philadelphia would be a great day or weekend trip. Check out www.gophila.org<BR>Many hotels are offering special discounts (ie:) third night free with 2 paid nights.

Ben Aug 27th, 2002 06:04 AM

Check out the Delaware Water Gap between NJ and PA. Beautiful scenery, hiking, waterfalls, horseback riding, antiquing, scenic drives and historic little villages. Just a lovely weekend getaway!

collette Aug 27th, 2002 08:54 AM

Providence RI... about 4 hours away from NYC. Beautiful architexture, great resturants, Waterfire, a Mayor recently convicted of racketeering but wow... the city looks wonderful. Also , Newport and other beaches are close by.
