Chicago steakhouse recommendations?
My husband and I are going to spend a weekend in Chicago this October. Does anyone have any suggestions for a GREAT steakhouse?
|
Gibson's on Rush Steet, NOT the one in Rosemont.

By rep. alone, in addition to Gibsons:
1. Mortons 2. Elis 3. Gene and Georgettis 4. Ruths Chris 5. Chicago Chop House |
I went to the Chop House a few years ago and we had an amazing meal.

By the way, the Chop House in Chicago is much better than any of the 3 Morton's I have been to in different cities.
|
Stay away from Gene and Gorgettis. My husband is a big steak fan and did not like it at all. His favorites are Mortons then Gibsons then Ruths Chris.
|
Absolutely Gibsons. Always a happening scene, usually a celebrity or two, and great food (huge portions to share). It is also a great mix of tourists and locals.
Hugo's Frog bar next door shares the same kitchen as Gibsons, but it is usually easier to get in and not quite as crazy. |
I had one of the best steaks I've ever had at Gibson's. Ate at the Chop House last week; it was very good, but I liked the steaks at Gibson's better.
|
Gibsons For sure, this is the best - but expensive and you might want to make your reservatrions early (4-6 weeks?)
Gene and Gorgettis is another great choice but some say it is overrated. The one good this about Genes is that is not a chain and is a true chicago experiance (also like gibsons even thought they did open another location) I think you may think the service is a little bit under par at genes (compared to gibsons ) but the food is very good. Elis - another great chicago orignal, also famaus for there cheesecake. I have not been here yet, but I have heard very good things. Chicago Chophouse - This is a great place, I like it very much. BUT I don't eat the steaks here. All of there meat is broiled so I don't like broiled steaks much. There prime rib is KING. I love it and they have several varieties. Another great thing about the place is value. your meal includes soup, salad, bread, and sides unlike every where else in chicago (ala carte) . the service here is very good and It is in an old Chicago 3 flat which is kind of cool also skip Ruth chris those are all over th country Mortons is chain also BUT IMO it is the best chain resturant in the world ( I normally hate chains) The mortons in chicago is execllent, but skip it if live near one or go to other cities with not so good resturants that have one (Example San antonio or San Diego) The indendepent Restruant Scene in Chicago is one of the best in the US |
Nobody likes Capitol Grille? It's my favorite! yum yum!
|
I would strongly recommend Keefer's on Kinzie & Dearborn. It has excellent steaks and a wonderful, fun atmosphere - also great service. Another option is Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab House - don't let the seafood/crab references mislead you - they have outstanding steaks as well. A bit noisy, but great people-watching. Have a great time!
|
Try The Saloon Steakhouse in the Seneca Hotel. It's much less crowded and has a men's club atmosphere. Compair them all at www.metromix.com
|
Compare, that is. Always check your spelling, mother told me.
|
LauraLinea,
When was the last time you went to Keefers - I have been there before and liked it very much but I heard they got a new chef and I heard it went a little down hill? I wonder if this is true |

I was just there about 2 weeks ago and it was great as always. I didn't hear anything about a new chef, and we know all the waiters there; probably would have heard some news about that. |
It as actually a while ago now that I think about it. So I am glad you say it is still great, because I liked it very much
|
I've been to Ruth Chris's, Gene & Georgetti's, Chop House, Smith and Wollensky, and Lawry's.
I suggest Chop House and then Smith and Wollensky. I didn't think Gene & Georgetti's was all that it was cracked up to be and I'm not a big fan of Ruth Chris's or Lawry's. |
Thanks to all for taking the time to answer. So many opinions to consider. It looks like the top contenders are Gibsons, Mortons, and the Chop House. We may just try all three. Just one more opinion request. Our favorite steakhouse so far is Del Friscos Double Eagle in Fort Worth, TX. If any of you have been to this wonderful place, which of the restaurants mentioned do you think we would like best?
|
Del friscos is actually a chain, I have not been there but my father has. He liked it very much. I think of these morton's would be the closest and Gibsons will also have a similar style of menu. If you like this stlye of resturant I would try to go to Gibsons - just remeber to stuff your wallet with money and make reservations early. Expect to pay 60-100 per person after drinks, tax and tip
Chophouse is very good but much different than these other places, it is a little more "Old School", Steaks are broiled not grilled and you get a full meal for a set price. Personally - If I were you I would go to BOTH gibsons and the Chophouse if you have time. Skip mortons - go to one of those by your home they are everywhere (including Dallas) Of course if you are only here for a weekend and want to eat steak only one night - Gibsons is your best choice |
GIBSON'S without any doubt and for a REAL treat, have their Turtle Pie for dessert...makes even the great steaks seem somewhat insignificant.
