At 'happy hour' time I liked the beachside bar at the Hale Koa (it's a military hotel but the bar is open to the public). Also the patio in front of Duke's is very nice. Under the banyan tree at the Moana hotel is a beautiful spot. And the bar down at New Otani (Hau Tree Lanai is the restaurant there) is fun with a great ocean view.

Eggs n Things is very popular for breakfast, but honestly there's always a line-up so I've yet to eat there myself.

I enjoyed the breakfast buffet at Shorebird at the Outrigger Reef hotel. Beautiful setting opening directly on to the beach and a nice variety of food (besides regular breakfast stuff they had some steamed fish, fried rice, ham, turkey, etc.)

If International Marketplace hasn't been demo'd yet, my absolute favorite dinner is getting some kind of fish or shrimp special from Blue Water Shrimp Co in the food court there on a night there's free entertainment on the stage.

The smoothie place on the side alley in the International Market Place has really good fresh sandwiches as well.

Agree with Suze on Germaine's. I adore their custard-filled Long Johns and the croissants. We go there for breakfast sometimes, and there are a few tables to sit at if you are lucky.

Cheeseburger in Paradise isn't too expensive, and the free magazines along the street have discount coupons for the Shorebird breakfast buffet. The fresh pineapple is delicious, and the view of Diamond Head is fabulous.

Not sure if it is still open but Eskimo Candy in Kihei had really good fish and chips.

PS If you happen to venture into Lahaina there is a good fresh mex place called Cilantros that is very reasonable.

carolyn, I forgot Germaine's bakery had a few indoor tables, you're right (and serves coffee). I usually get something to-go the night before, take home a piece of quiche for easy breakfast in the hotel room in the morning (i had frig, microwave, coffee maker).

They have a few different kinds of sandwiches. There's a cute 6-pack of various filling with crusts cut off that seem popular with the Japanese tourists (great for a picnic at the beach)! The sandwiches I like best were in a deli case, on walnut bread, with cukes, lettuce, sprouts, etc. tuna or turkey or rb.

And for Elendeilpickle on Maui:
If you' find yourself in Lahaina I enjoyed Aloha Mixed Plate and breakfast on the veranda at Pioneer Inn right in town.

Oh, and don't forget to have a malasada at Leonard's!

Elendilpickle, on our next trip to Oahu, we are definitely going to Bogart's Café & Espresso Bar located near Diamond Head. Go to trip advisor and read the reviews. Several former Fodorites know the owner(and have eaten in her café) and she still posts here some times!!

This all sounds wonderful! I will definitely need good coffee in the morning, so thanks, iceeu2, for the Bogart's recommendation.

We arrive in Honolulu at 11:30 in the morning, and we've scheduled a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial at 2:30. We have to pick up our tickets by 1:30.

What is a good place to eat lunch in that area?

Want the best chicken in Hawaii?

If you are heading to the North Shore on Oahu, take the Wahiawa exit off the H-2 freeway and enjoy some incredible chicken at Maui Mike's Fire-Roasted Chicken. (Don't get confused. Maui Mike's is on Oahu.)

Maui Mike's is a hole-in-the-wall place with very reasonable prices, long lines and happy customers.

Here's their website: http://MauiMikes.com

I like Coconuts Fish Cafe and Eskimo Candy Seafood Market and Cafe in Kihei. Eskimo Candy is a Fish Monger, but they serve food until 7:00 pm. Coconuts has really good fish tacos.

If you go on the Kaanapali side, go north of the Sheraton and there's some small shopping center with a restaurant with very excellent fish tacos (grilled fish with great salsa). Just yelp your restaurants and you can filter by price.

I definitely agree with the person who recommended Kihei Caffe. It's a great place for breakfast; but I imagine you could get a great lunch there also. Another place that I would recommend in Kihei is Fat Daddy's Smokehouse BBQ. The food is good, the portions are generous and the price is very reasonable.

Echo the Eskimo Candy and Coconuts recommendations in Kihei. We also like Paia Fish Market, but that is a drive from Wailea.
