Cheap Eats on Oahu and Maui
Mr. Pickle and I will spend two nights on Oahu in March 2014, followed by four nights on Maui for my brother-in-law's wedding. Yes, it would be great to have more time there, but we are traveling to Wales in May and had to take time away from that trip for Hawaii travel.
We're flying to Honolulu so we can visit Pearl Harbor, and we plan to drive around the island so I can see some LOST filming sites. When we get to Maui, we're renting a condo in Wailea with some of Mr. Pickle's family, so I'm sure we will at least have breakfast there. I'm looking for inexpensive places for lunch and dinner on both islands. Lunch could be around $10 for an entree, and dinner could be more - maybe $20 or so for an entree. We're open to any cuisine, and we definitely want to try plate lunches, shave ice, etc. I'm looking forward to your suggestions! Lee Ann |
posting where on Maui might be helpful

She is staying in Wailea. I've stayed there a couple of times and don't remember many cheap eats.
I loved the Ono Burger at the Paia Fish Market. |
As I said, we have a condo in Wailea. The wedding (just family) is Friday evening, and they are having a party for us and their friends Saturday evening, so we'll have most of Thursday, parts of Friday and Saturday, and all of Sunday through Monday evening to plan meals for while we're on Maui. We can get into Kihei pretty easily, and we're just starting to figure out what else we want to do while we're there.

On Oahu -
Nico's Pier 38 http://nicospier38.com/ Town (maybe slightly above budget but the food is very good) http://www.townkaimuki.com/ The Pig & The Lady (currently at farmer's markets but opening a permanent location soon) http://thepigandthelady.com/ The farmer's markets in general have a variety of prepared foods. What days of the week are you there? There's a food court at the Ala Moana shopping center and also a food court at the Shirokiya department store at Ala Moana. There are shrimp trucks on the north shore and in the Kahuku area. I haven't eaten at any of the recently so can't comment on specific ones. |
This might help too http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/873333

We love the shrimp shack(Oahu)

Get the macadamia pancakes! (Now I want to go back :-) ) |
You might try Cafe O'Lei in Kihei.

On Oahu, I love to sit beachside and have lunch at the Moana Surfrider restaurant that is located around the big tree (you'll know it when you see it). Hopefully this isn't a budget buster for you. It's really a delightful place to relax for a meal!!

There are a number of places at the Shops at Wailea. In my trip report I wrote, "At the Wailea Shops, we had a fantastic, messy, juicy cheeseburger at Cheeseburger Island Style with some great sweet potato fries!"

Another very atmospheric waterfront location in Waikiki is the House Without A Key at the Halekulani hotel http://www.halekulani.com/living/din...without_a_key/ They have hula nightly and we never miss at least having drinks and apps there and their coconut cake!!!

Breakfast at Kihei Kaffe is excellent. If you eat breakfast in, go for lunch and order breakfast!
|
Thanks, everyone. This is a good start!

Sorry, I forgot - Patty, we arrive on a Tuesday around noon and leave for Maui on Thursday at noon. Our flight back to the mainland leaves on a Monday evening.

Ooops, I read Wales and missed Wailea! What fun! Will you have a car? It's been 3 years so I am leary to recommend anything. But we always go to Hailliamiale General Store for sashimi Neopolean. and stop at Paia for an affordable bite. Foodland grocers make great ahi poke. We liked farmers salad at Mela in the Marriott - I notice their famous asian wings are no longer on the menu? Tommy Bahama was decent until they lost their view. It's just not the same for us anymore. Stop at Joes for the crab dip and a cocktail at sunset. Check to see if there are any new food trucks down by Makena. Have a picnic at Makena!
I'd browse thru chow hound for more ideas. This should be a good start. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/902293 |

On how could I forget???
and Seaside Bar & Grill on Kuhio, an old-school place serving all 3 meals daily, with bar, lots of specials |
