Travel agents can be very helpful if your situation is complicated, but for something as straightfowward as booking a hotel room in a big city, you're much better-off going straight to the hotels' own sites or through an agency like Priceline.

Has anyone heard about Super 8 Times Square. Called and got $99 per night for three with 2 double beds. Taking two teens and hope it is fine.

If staying in a studio apt. has any appeal, www.hospitalityco.com is having a summer special - rates are under $100/night and you get a choice of locations.

Haven't used them myself, but there have been very positive comments about the company on this board.

Good luck!

Terri:

There are a couple of threads for the Super 8 Times Square. You can do a text search for them.
IWe liked the Madison, on 27th and Madison Ave, a lot, and at present they have double rooms for $88, until July 15. When we were there last Christmas we got a family room for the four of us at that rate, and they threw in breakfast as well. Frankly, the Madison saved our budget... we stayed in New York for less than we stayed in Disney World!

Just got back from 4 nights at the Comfort Inn Midtown and was very pleased. Got a great rate ($89 weekdays, $98 weekends, AAA rate) through www.applecorehotels.com, which owns it.

Located at 129 W 46th street, it's a block from Times Square, a location that couldn't be handier, but the street was relatively quiet. It has a huge variety of restaurants, but isn't on the way TO anywhere, so pedestrian traffic was moderate.

Hotel is entirely nonsmoking, rather small (9 stories, about 8-10 rooms per floor, small but cozy lobby), has no restaurant or room service, but a free decent continental breakfast (bagels, cream cheese, donuts, cereal, fruit juice etc.). Rooms below the 6th or 7th floor might have a view of a brick wall. My room, 703, seemed a bit larger than others I peeked into.

Everything was immaculately clean, the staff were pleasant and competent. Definitely a good buy, if you don't need a kitchen.

Anyone ever heard of the Walcott Hotel? I discovered their website while surfing today. It's a great location, midtown near the Empire State Building. If the photos they're posting are for real, it looks like a very nice place. Just to see what I'd get, I placed a dummy reservation for 3 nights and got a quote of $99 per night for a Queen bed room. Can't beat that with a stick. Here's the link.

http://www.wolcott.com/

Elfie: I think Suzy's rate and location at the Comfort Inn beat yours at the Wolcott.

Im one of the rare ones who thinks the Hotel Pennsylvania is fine. We were there in March....had a clean room with new furniture and king sized bed. The service was fine and convenient to everything. Stayed for $79 and we will go again.
