What don't you understand xxx. If you want people to come to NY,spend money and help build up the NY economy you must try to make it more convenient for them to do so. That's the mayor's job!!!! IMO

The most upsetting thing for me so far is that Bloomberg has suspended the the recycling of plastic. He claims it will save NYC 40 million dollars in one year. I wonder what we are giving up with that much more trash to manage. How hard will it be to start it back up again. He kind of lost my endorsement moving in this direction. I think it is not very forward thinking.

jane Jul 31st, 2002 06:06 PM

Sarah, I totally agree with you. You would like to think of your city as moving forward towards a better future--not backwards.

"You use to be able to go into the city on a Sunday for brunch or the museums and park on the street all day."<BR><BR>And this was a good thing ... how? Why not take the bus or train, there are plenty. NYC is not the place to drive a private vehicle. <BR>

NYC - is def. on the downslide -slowly-but on the downslide - as far a quality of life issues again.<BR><BR>I saw my first 3 card monte game for the first time in a long while!<BR><BR>Welcome back to the real "Big Apple"<BR>God I love NY!

Parking Meters GREAT news!<BR><BR>Metro wrote:"You use to be able to go into the city on a Sunday for brunch or the museums and park on the street all day."<BR><BR>This is great! Now, when someone wants to find a place to park for a few minutes to shop or catch a bite to eat, there's a chance at finding a parking spot that isn't being hogged by someone "in a museum all day"<BR><BR>Just as "Metro Mike Bloomberg" says, the city has a finite amount of space available, and must efficiently allocate it's resources accordingly. $24 a day, which is what those meters work out to, is DAMN CHEAP parking!<BR>

Metro Mike Bloombert is an idiot.

samie Aug 1st, 2002 03:53 PM

As someone who has grown up in the age of recycling, the idea of NOT recycling plastic is completely foreign to me. Was it here that I read that some NYers are asking co-workers living outside of the city to take recycleables home with them?? Sounds like an idea..

arf Aug 3rd, 2002 04:34 AM

samie<BR><BR>do you mean that co workers carry recyclables to work and other employees carry it home to recycle in there tow?<BR>That is really amazing if it is true.

Sarah Aug 3rd, 2002 05:47 AM

That would be a great grass movement idea to have coworkers take home plastic. Thing is people are so concerned with their jobs right now I don't see people thinking about this issue.<BR><BR>Heard Bloomberg talking about a new way to get rid of the waste just a day or two ago, NEW MARINE DUMPING!!! It won't save us money he claims but it is a way to reduce waste. <BR><BR>THAT IS YOUR OCEAN NON-NEW YORKERES!!! <BR><BR>I am really starting to hate this guy and I am not a big time environmentalist at all but that does not mean that I think we should throw caution to the wind on the environment either.

qqr Aug 4th, 2002 03:32 PM

It is time for the rest of the us who want a clean ocean to write to the mayor and demand that he come up with some other way to dispose of NYC waste without hurting the rest of us.

NYER Aug 6th, 2002 10:07 AM

Any more opinions on this one?

Elfie Aug 6th, 2002 10:26 AM

OK, I'm a NYer so I'll post my .02. Honestly I don't notice any difference in so-called quality-of-life issues under Bloomie. Didn't vote for him, and was definitely not a fan of Giuliani while he was in office. My opinion of Bloomie is that he's a bored billionaire who wanted a new toy, i.e. City Hall, to play with, and he brings absolutely nothing new and no qualifications to this job. So you can probably tell I'm cynical about his effectiveness for the city. I feel that New York's economic health depends much more on the national economy and tourist mood than on the mayor anyway.

AJ Aug 6th, 2002 12:14 PM

Hi Elfie:<BR><BR>I agree the national economy and tourism will be the answer for NYC. However if the mayor doesn't take care of the quality of life issue than tourism will suffer.

As a life long New Yorker, I actually long for the days when Times Square was overrun with sex shops and hookers. The new Disneyized Times Square just freaks me out in a sense. But that's just me. As for quality of life, it hasn't changed much at all. When a friend of mine visited from Miami, he did make an observation that our beggars at least attempt to entertain you for money. (The singer in Grand Central Station, the dancing guys on the L train, etc.)

jon Aug 7th, 2002 04:21 AM

I agree. We should try to keep the flavor of ny in tact.<BR>What is ny without hookers, beggars, and other shady characters!!!!!

MayorMike Aug 10th, 2002 05:52 AM

Ladies and Gentlemen,<BR>Life in NY has improved 100% since we ran that nasty, mean, ho Rudy out of City Hall. New Yorkers are again proud to be New Yorkers. Crime is down, race relations are improving, the city school system is now under the mayors control, the World Trade Center site will not be turned into a combination cemetery/Giuliani monument, restaurant workers right to a smoke free envirnoment will be protected. I could go on and on and on. New York has emerged from the dark cloud of Rudy Giuliani happy and proud!!
