The day you left, the weather turned bad. You were fortunate.

Best wishes for DH.

Hello Centralparkgirl, I am so sorry to read your husband is back in the hospital. I hope and pray that your husband will be on the mend too dear one. May the operation be successful and may your husband have a long life free of medical problems. Hugs from Northern California.

johnthedorf Nov 8th, 2008 03:05 AM

Terrific post CPG. Hope your husband bounces back this time. I lived on Taylor St. near Grace Cathedral and the Mass on Easter rivals Carnegie Hall! My wife and I went twice that day it was so good!
I was in the "city" this summer and really miss it. Went to school in NYC and the contrasts between the two are what makes this a wonderful country. Your next trip should be driving North through Oregon and up to Seattle. More surprises!

Centralparkgirl Nov 8th, 2008 03:21 AM

Thank you all again for the good wishes - I do find them comforting!

Postscript (due to poor memory!)

On the first day that we drove to GGPark, we took Broadway to the very end in Pacific Heights (near Lyon St maybe) and parked for a few minutes. What a magnificent area. The homes are gorgeous and I love that they're all different. We walked down the staircase for awhile - stunning views, small, lovely gardens with sculptures - what a way to live!

On our last full day, after lunch at Tadich Grill, we walked over to the Contemporary Jewish Museum for a docent led tour about Daniel Liebeskind's architecture. Much of the design we would not have understood without the docent, but we did not like it and found some of the disorientation that it causes self indulgence by the architect. Also, this museum does not have a permanent collection; didn't care for any of the exhibits except the gallery of photos of Jews in the Bay area - a varied collection of modern and old photos that people in the Bay area submitted.

cpg, just wanted you to know I am thinking about you and sending the best to DH.
((*))

Centralparkgirl Nov 8th, 2008 06:32 PM

Thanks ms starrs. Did I imagine that you are coming to my fair city? What are your plans besides W?

starrs Nov 9th, 2008 03:14 AM

No W this time - believe it or not! :-)
Coming in over Thanksgiving weekend.
Phantom and RC Christmas Spectacular and maybe "something else" from TKTS.
Traveling with a friend who has never been to NYC. Can't wait!

Centralparkgirl Nov 9th, 2008 05:39 AM

'Something else' is a good plan.
I don't know what my situation will be that weekend, but maybe we could meet for a drink or coffee or whatever at some point.

If you want to do something different, consider the train show at the NYBG. The miniature NY buildings, bridges and landmarks are delightful. I may be able to help you with tix if you and your friend want to go.

CPG, so glad to hear you had such a wonderful time on your California trip. But so sad to hear about your husband's friend's son, and about your husband's health. I hope at least he is doing better (I'm sure the mother of the young man who died won't be better for quite some time).

(FKA dmlove)

Centralparkgirl Nov 10th, 2008 04:46 AM

sf7307 - Where did dmlove go and why???

About the banker - I don't think you can ever 'recover' from something like that. I lost my brother a long time ago and yes, life does go on, but nothing was ever the same for my parents and myself. The banker told dh that there was a memorial service one week later in NY that over 400 people attended and 16 people flew in from Stanford!!! He must have been a very special young man.
Thanks for asking about dh - tomorrow's the big day.

andrew8 Nov 10th, 2008 07:48 AM

Good luck tomorrow CP !

Please let me know how you make out.

starrs Nov 10th, 2008 07:48 AM

Good luck tomorrow!
Hope all goes well and it works out to see you in a couple of weeks.
Hugs,

andrew8 Nov 11th, 2008 02:54 PM

CP,
Steelygirl and I are thinking of you and your DH.

andrew8 Nov 14th, 2008 05:42 PM

CP,
Hope everything is Ok. SG and I are thinking of you both.

Austin Nov 14th, 2008 06:29 PM

CPgirl - your trip report was a pleasure to read. DH and I adore the wine country and have made some of the same trips you have - Bodega Bay, Jenner, Guerneville, etc. We have a favorite place to stay on the Russian River. I want to spend a few days in SF and he's been hesitant. I'll show him your report and I think we'll be there soon. We love that part of the US.

Also felt an affinity for your situation as my DH also had an injury as a result of a very minor surgery. It's been a bad dream at times and this Monday he will also have surgery and hopefully end much of his pain once and for all.

Here's to having healthy husbands again.((D))

Centralparkgirl Nov 14th, 2008 07:08 PM

Austin - I will drink to that!!!! Good luck on Monday.

Andrew8 - The surgery went pretty well, but the surgeon said he's never seen anything like this, called in the head of surgery to look and they took photos. It is now crystal clear what actually happened to him in the previous surgery. He was in recovery almost 8 hours because they weren't able to manage the pain. It's definitely gotten better, but today's catastrophe was that a culture they took on Tuesday showed bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics - so he's now in isolation in a dreadful part of the hospital even though he has no symptoms of infection. I am absolutely drained. I'll be in touch; I have to get up crack of dawn to take ds to the airport. Continue the positive thoughts!!

andrew8 Nov 14th, 2008 07:35 PM

I'm sorry to hear about the infection CP. I'm sure your exhausted right now. Please keep us posted and sending prayers to you both. Thank you for letting us know the latest on DH.

LoveItaly Nov 14th, 2008 08:26 PM

My thoughts have been with you two Centralparkgirl and I am so sorry to read your latest update. Prayers are sent that this nightmare will soon be over, I can imagine how totally exhausted you must be.

And my very best wishes for your dear husband too Austin! May the operation go smooth and may your husband be on the road to recovery.

Austin Nov 15th, 2008 10:04 AM

Oh, good lord CPgirl! I hope they can contain the bacteria. I know exactly what you are going thru. Please keep in touch here when you can.

Centralparkgirl Nov 15th, 2008 04:29 PM

So, it's 8:50 and all's not well. Dh did not get proper care yesterday when he was transferred and I made myself heard loud and clear (when he is home, the president of the hospital will hear from me). The head of infectious diseases spoke to us and she is not overly concerned. He has no signs of infection and it is very possible that he has bacteria, but is not 'infected' by it. More tests are being done and nothing will happen over the weekend. He is in a funk, feeling lousy and did not want to do what he's supposed to do - walk, sit in a chair, etc. A little lecture from me took care of that. Then, early evening I got a cell call that no apartment dweller wants to get - please come home; your neighbor above you has a pipe that burst in a riser. So, I have major water damage to the floors in both bedrooms, furniture moved and strangers in and out of my apartment. While they were pulling up carpet, tearing out padding, vacuuming up water and watching the wood floors buckle, I decided to drink some wine shipped home from Napa along with chocolate from the Ferry Bldg (that's why this still belongs on this thread - there is a travel connection). And it has taken the edge off. So as they parade in and out of my apt, I am drinking and thinking that ds1 flew back to NM this morning safely before the torrential rains; that I spoke to ds2 earlier (an engineering senior) and he is happy and excelling; and Thanksgiving is around the corner and we will have a little, quiet celebration and I'll cook and complain how much work it is, but things will be better and we will be together.

Can California wine gives someone the clarity to realize that worse things can happen?

Thank you dear friends for caring!

andrew8 Nov 15th, 2008 05:30 PM

CP,
I can't believe what you've been through today. Sorry to hear about DH.

Is DH either at Cornell/Columbia, NYU, or Mt Sinai?

Centralparkgirl Nov 15th, 2008 06:29 PM

Beth Israel - that's where his great surgeon is.

Toucan2 Nov 15th, 2008 06:35 PM

Good grief! I think you are beyond the "bad things come in threes" point. Thank goodness for the wine and chocolate, and I'm glad it helped you see things from a positive perspective.

Hang in there.

andrew8 Nov 15th, 2008 06:41 PM

I'm sorry for everything CP. You both have been through so much lately.

You would be proud of me in that DW and I are going to see Osage County in early December. We both can't wait to see Hair in Feb. I think I'll wear my Tie-Dye shirt underneath my navy blue blazer for the show.

DW and I want to take you out to dinner when you're up to it.

Centralparkgirl Nov 16th, 2008 04:25 AM

andrew - thanks!

You will really enjoy 'Osage County.' It was my #1 drama recommendation last season. This season, it's 'Equus,' but I haven't seen 'A Man for All Seasons' yet, but I am so looking forward to it. I haven't seen anything about 'Hair' ticket sales, but am still watching for you. FORGET the blazer!!!! Tie died shirt and jeans are absolutely appropriate for 'Hair.' LOL

Austin - again, good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes.

sf7307 Nov 16th, 2008 12:28 PM

CP, I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am that you (and, more importantly, your DH) have been through this. I hope everything turns out well. Let us Californians know if you run out of wine and we can send you some more!

LoveItaly Nov 16th, 2008 03:01 PM

Oh Centralparkgirl, I just read your last posts.

How is your husband today? Much better I sincerely hope!

And your apartment, what condition is it now in? Water damage can be horrible.

And you have such a good attitude..I think it is your beautiful personality and not just because of the California wine and the chocolates.

Sending you and your husband my very best wishes and prayers dear one. May every day get better and better!

andrew8 Nov 17th, 2008 01:39 PM

CP,
I have some interesting news about what DW and I did last night. You better hang on to your barrel of vino because you're not going to believe what I did.
Saturday night after we got home from dinner in the city, DW mentions how she would love to see Boz Scaggs again at the Blue Note as she loved seeing him with her best friend earlier in the week.

So I check online to see that the 8pm show is booked on Sunday night. Right then I say to myself, I am totally off the hook....NO Boz Scaggs !!!
That wasn't the case because last night I was Shanghaied into seeing Boz Scaggs at the 10:30pm . Can you believe it?? AC/DC got panned this week for Boz Scaggs.
My DW is a huge Boz Scaggs fan so she really wanted to see him again. What's worse CP is that I killed time during the 75 minutes of totally agony by having not 1 but 2 servings of sorbet. I thought having a sugar buzz would take away the pain.

As for the performance, even with our table right in front it was Ok at best. What ruined the evening was I tried to get an autograph CD for DW and was told that Boz hasn't done that in years. That's when I grabbed DW's tiny hand and headed home faster than I can eat a whole large Lombardi's pizza pie.

Hope today was a better day for you both.

Toucan2 Nov 17th, 2008 02:51 PM

I can't believe you are dissing Boz Scaggs! You are a bad bad man. But at least your took your wife to see him.

CPG, I hope your husband is doing better.

Centralparkgirl Nov 17th, 2008 06:48 PM

andrew - we are going to have to have a chat - there are far better things than sorbet to take away pain! I'm worried about you!!

Thanks again everyone. I wish I had something good to report, but no real progress for dh. He's is so discouraged and I'm getting slightly worried. Today is day 11 and no end in sight. I will be speaking to his surgeon in the morning while the plumbers are breaking a wall in my apt to replace a pipe. The fact that there is built-in furniture in front of the wall shouldn't be a problem, right?

On a lighter note, when dh was admitted I paid for tv in his room up until the day of surgery and told the tv guy, I will resume service after the surgery when he is feeling better. On Thurs, I called to resume and was told I owed money for the surgery day and the following day. I told her that was impossible and then this dope tells me that he's not allowed to watch tv because his mother called and he doesn't have permission to watch. This is exactly my response: "Well, that is quite interesting because his mother has been dead for over 25 years and if you speak to her again, would you have her call me? I would love to chat with her." I could not make this up if I tried.

andrew8 Nov 17th, 2008 07:09 PM

CP,
I am sorry that today wasn't a better day for you both. I can't believe what your going through a BE Hospital. Please keep us informed.
I should mention that I can't drink with my condition but one more concert like that and I'm heading for some Thin's Gin.

Centralparkgirl Nov 17th, 2008 07:25 PM

andrew - you are too funny! Can you drink when you are off treatment or is it all the time?

andrew8 Nov 17th, 2008 09:00 PM

I can't drink now CP as right now my organs are finally getting normal.

Debbiekep2 Nov 19th, 2008 05:10 AM

Just want to tell you that I enjoyed your trip report. But, now I am following your updates regarding DH and the apartment crisis. Wishing you the best!

bmw732002 Nov 19th, 2008 06:43 AM

You are definitely being tested, CP Girl! But by your posts you seem to have the right attitude to weather this storm.

Good thoughts for your DH’s full recovery!

John

MomDDTravel Nov 19th, 2008 07:52 AM

CP - still reading to stay up to date on your dh. I am so sorry and pray things turn around.

Andrew - you had me LOL!!

DW is on the money. I saw Boz years ago - at my very favorite outdoor venue in San Diego - Humphry's on the Bay. It was actually a magical night. Dh and I had a blast! :))

Centralparkgirl Nov 19th, 2008 08:19 AM

Thanks for the support, guys!! I truly appreciate it.

Yesterday was really tough (his morale was at its lowest.), but I think he's finally turned a corner. He started liquids and he's tolerating them. If all goes well today, maybe ice cream tomorrow. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but because he was so ill going into the surgery and the surgery was so extensive, these little steps are huge. And his head is in a better place today. I am home this morning while walls are smashed and pipes replaced. My super is doing whatever he has control to do and giving my apt priority, but it is a process.

I am starting to function a la Scarlett O'Hara because there is only so much that can be handled in one day.....and there's always tomorrow!

Has anyone heard anything about Austin's dh?

Centralparkgirl Nov 19th, 2008 08:51 AM

Andrew - I just got an email from Amex Gold Card - there is a presale for Hair (you can purchase from now thru 12/5 for tickets for all dates)
Do you have the card?

andrew8 Nov 19th, 2008 11:09 AM

Thanks CP !

I have an Amex that should allow me to get these tickets, but its not a Gold.

I'm going to look into it right now.

CP!
One quick question...how is the leg room at this theater??? Do I need to get isle seating or can you slide your feet under the seat in front of you?
