Carmel's storybook cottages
The Jan/Feb issue of Cottage Living magazine has a feature on Comstock's whimsical cottages in Carmel.
http://www.cottageliving.com/cottage...688075,00.html The mag has a walking tour to visit the Hansel and Gretel type cottages. There's supposed to be an interactive map on the website - but I can't find it. In case anyone who plans to visit Carmel would be interested. I'm planning to be there in March and this is exactly the type of thing I like to do. So, just in case it is of interest to anyone else... ((*)) |
If you want to stay at a B&B with stroybook charm, try Vagabonds House Inn. It is the heart of the village, with units wrapped around a lovely courtyard. Most cottages have wood-burning fireplaces and kitchenettes. See www.vagabondshouseinn.com

Thanks!

Oh, thanks for telling me about this. I just googled and this must be the one you took -
http://www.carmelwalks.com/ This sounds wonderful! Many, many thanks :-) |
yes that's it!! :)
|
Thanks Starrs.
I couldn't even count the hours my wife & I have wandered the streets around Carmel admiring this type of architecture. We rarely spend any time on Ocean Ave any more - we hit the streets where these cottages are located. Stu Dudley |
Okay, Stu. Help me out.
If I take a tour (of some kind) in SF, this walking tour in Carmel, what would you recommend further down the coast on the way to LA. I may be stopping over in Morro Bay for a couple of days. I've seen the "basics" on previous visits to CA. Oftentimes, I feel like I'm just driving by. I found a coastal walk outside of LA but I'm afraid it may conflict with plans with friends on the weekend. Where should I stop on the way down and/or in LA to see some different things. I love walking tours (can you tell?) |
i believe there's a really nice walking tour of san luis obispo around the mission etc. i went to school there and it really is a lovely town

What have you seen/not seen?
Heading south from SF along the coast, these are places we like to visit: 1. Devil's Slide view from Hwy 1 2. Sam's Chowder House for lunch 3. Half Moon Bay - Main St 4. Half Moon Bay - walk on beach at end of Kelly St and/or Poplar St 4. Ano Nuevo when seals are there - Dec thru March 5. Victorian houses in Santa Cruz 6. Monterey Bay Aquarium 7. Pacific Grove shops & Victorian houses 8. Pacific Grove drive along coast on Ocean View Blvd/Sunset Dr to Spanish Bay 9. 17 Mile Drive 10. Carmel shops, beach, & cottages 11. Carmel - walk or drive along Scenic Rd. from Carmel Beach parking lot. 12. Pt Lobos State Park (must see) 13. Drive south on Hwy 1 - Bixby Bridge 14. Pfeiffer Beach. Just past Pfeiffer campground (on inland side of rd) There is a small bridge. Past the bridge there is a road on your right leading uphill with a gate across it. Just past this road there is another road leading slightly downhill with lots of street signs - mostly facing the other way. Take this road to the beach - it's a couple of miles long. Beautiful beach. 14. Relaxing lunch or dinner at Nepenthe - fantastic views. I consider this a must see. 15. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park & waterfall 16. More scenic Hwy 1 till San Simeon Things that I think are a tad over-rated: 1. Monterey Cannery Row (aproaching Fisherman's Wharf in tackiness) 2. Cambria - it's not Carmel 3. Santa Cruz Boardwalk is not my type of thing - it may be yours 4. Santa Cruz Downtown - I liked it much more before the earthquake. Stu Dudley |
I've done about a 1/3 of them. This list is WONDERFUL! Many thanks.
I added Sam's to my list based on your comments on another thread. I agree with Nepenthe too :-) |
topping - more trip planning
|
I would make reservations if you plan on seeing the Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo.
|
My favorite walk at Carmel is the beach, end to end.
If you miss your pups, Starrs, you can always find Labs on the beach to admire. We were down there 2 weeks ago, and I must have joined the "Lab meeting"---there were 6 yellows, 3 blacks and a chocolate, all meeting for a romp on the beach. |
We just sold one of our Carmel homes. It was Hugh Comstock's first adobe home. Can't wait to check out this magazine and see if our former house is in it. Thanks for sharing. Starrs.
|
Oh, TTess. I wish I could see it inside. What an amazing house to live in. Enjoy the article. I'm looking forward to the tour next month.

Can't wait for this trip! :-) |
We drove around looking at the cottages. They are adorable! There is a cute little cottage in town where we had breakfast called the Tuck Box. It was busy and it is a small place but was worth the wait.

We eat at the Tuck Box whenever we visit-it's good, reasonable and very cute!
|
Starrs -when are you going to be here? Are you traveling with family?
