Cancun or Cabo San Lucas

Hi, from Australia and organising my honeymoon. Would like to stay in Mexico for 1 week of it before going on to Anguilla and was wondering what thoughts could be shared on choosing between Cabo San Lucas (staying at Westin Regina) v Cancun (staying at the Omni??).

Any advice would be great. Thank you in advance.

wrong forum - try Latin America (though some will answer this thread)

You don't say when you are planning to go. Offhand, I'd say Cabo since you are going to the Caribbean anyway. But, it would seem to me that there are better options much closer to home.

we are going next march, I have been everywhere there is to go around austrlia (thailand, malaysia, indonesia, singapore, fiji, vanuatu etc..) want to go somewhere amazing and hoping that cap juluca in anguilla will do that for me!

With the exception of the Mayan ruins, Cabo has everything Cancun has plus it has scenery. Cancun is just a flat, drained swamp with a beautiful beach. Cabo has mountains and the Arco. Also, Cabo has more luxurious hotels. Check out:

We spent a week in Cancun in April and we could never swim in the sea because it was too rough. They also had jellyfish warnings everywhere. Although we had a good time otherwise, we will not return.

A better choice in the Yucatan would be down the coast a bit near Tulum. But, I'd still give the nod to Cabo especially if you like to play Tennis or Golf. Cancun is too hot to do those things during the day. Cabo's climate is milder.

If you are in Cabo the earlier part of March, you may be able to catch the whales on both the Pacific and Sea of Cortez sides of Baja. Magdalena Bay is a sanctuary where whales come each winter to give birth. Weather will also be great, not too hot. Baja will give you a glipse of the desert.

We will be there during Easter break.

good luck,

MY

Gosh..with the amazing places you have been Cabo or Cancun might be a let down... I have been to Thailand and it is stunning... Cabo is great fun and very enjoyable - I like it because it is a short flight from LAX - Cancun has beautiful beaches, but I have not been back since the hurricane a few years back. Since you are going to Anguilla I think that I would go to Cabo - I would stay at the One and Only Pamilla NOT the Westin Regina.JMO

Agree with Dawn on Palmilla in Cabo..gorgeous and will be somewhat diverse than Anguilla..
One of the best resorts I have ever been to..
Love eating lobster tacos, drinking Margarita's and playing in the waves at the beach...late afternoon playing 9 holes..eating at great restaurants at night..repeat.

Why not Hawaii? It would break your trip in half and wouldn't be out of your way.

Maui or the Big Island would be my choice.

I think Cabo would be a big letdown for a honeymoon, especially if you have been to the south Pacific. It's not that nice.

I'm kind of against avoiding one destination just because it might not live up to somewhere else you've been. If that were the case, you'd have to stop traveling once you took your dream trip ;) That said, I think Cabo is a little more ritzy, whereas Cancun is more spring break-y. I did love Cancun, even though it was a little touristy..but I went pre-hurricane, so I can't vouch for the beaches.

TahitiTams May 31st, 2007 01:48 PM

Both Cabo and Cancun are prone to hurricanes from June to October and having been in one in Cabo a couple a years ago and it was horrific...that being said, I have been to Cabo over 25+ times over the years..its a beautiful place to stay and to enjoy the natural beauty of Los Cabos..
The Westin Regina is very nice but if you can do Palmilla, I would suggest that hotel.
Aussie's love Cabo and I think you will have a blast.
Where in Australia do you live?
I used to live in Rose Bay, Sydney..

I would choose Puerto Vallarta over Cabo anyday.

suze May 31st, 2007 01:58 PM

"Cabo has scenery"??? Well if you like a desert peninsula I guess it does.

Otis_B_Driftwood May 31st, 2007 03:01 PM

I don't care much for Puerto Vallarta especially since they built the big hotels. Also, after rains the water gets very murky.

Another option is down the coast from there - Costa Careyes. This area is not as touristy and has wonderful beaches.

Still another option is Zihuatanejo and it's wonderful Le Casa Que Canta.

What forum is this in? It seems to get lost very quickly.

Dukey Jun 1st, 2007 04:21 AM

If we are talking "ritzy" then my choice would be the Ritz Carlton at Cancun.

suze Jun 1st, 2007 05:58 AM

Otis, If someone didn't like the big hotels that have been built out in Nuevo Vallarta, I can't imagine you would like Cancun or Cabo either.

suze Jun 1st, 2007 05:59 AM

And it's true if this post was on Latin America board it would stay in place longer, because that board is much less active than the United States where things sink real quick because of all the postings.

Hi
We just returned from Cancun we are usually caribbean island travlers but thought we'd give Mexico a try.

Cancun is completely opposite of Anguilla. While Anguilla is quiet, sophisticated and has a calm sea. Cancun is loud, full of drunken 18 year olds and the sea is very rough.

I'd suggest laying over in St. Marten's for the first part of your trip and then travel over to Anguilla. The food there is fabulous as well as the beaches.
