It's between $1.49 and $1.59 in Baton Rouge. This summer, we have to start using reformulated gasoline (our punishment for poor air quality) Isn't that what you all have in California? I think we're bracing for over $2 a gallon because of that. What sort of gas mileage do you get with the reformulated gasoline?

I paid $3.30 for premium last week along Highway 1 in the Big Sur area of California. We passed up $3.00 thinking we could find it cheaper up the road! By then we were close to running on fumes with no alternatives in sight. At that point I would have paid just about anything. We bought just enough (with a little cushion) to get us to Carmel where we found it for $1 less.

Here in Northern California we have the higest gas prices in the country. When Tosco, our local refinery was asked why, their answer was, "Because we [Northern CA consumers] can afford it."

Ah, supply and demand. Doncha love it?

Having just moved to LA 6 months (paid $2.09 yesterday in West LA) ago from Europe-I sympathize with "yeah, but we Europeans pay $plus a gallon".........but just have to add my husband's quip back to Cicerone....."But Switzerland is the size of Hermosa Beach" :) However, that said, as a good social democratic European-I have to add my my vote to the anti-SUV movement

To jv: Its $1.65 in the burbs of Chicago but alot more in the city proper. And you are not alone when it comes to the tone of some of the replies. You did specify the US. This is basically a survey of US prices.

Well for all of the negative comments usually made about New Jersey, (Disney most recently) I'm estatic to report that I paid $1.57 today and am glad I'm NOT in CA.! (It was $1.55 in the morning when I passed by!)

In Sacramento this morning gas started at $2.35. Ouch!

Is Costco cheaper for gas in California? I'm amazed at the lines for gas at our Costco in Naples, Fl., especially when their gas is the same price as a number of the nearby discounters like Cite and Hess.

fdecarlo, at least it was an honest response and they didn't go into all that nonsense that we usually hear about refineries closing to be repaired, or whatever. Oh, and OPEC is raising the price. Well, if that's the reason, why doesn't gas cost the same in the rest of the country? This is California's punishment for not voting for W.

Yes, here in the San Francisco Bay area the price of regular was $1.99 at Costco and 20 to 30 cents higher at other gas stations!

At the risk of ticking off my fellow Americans, I have to admit that gas here in Kuwait is a mere .85 a gallon!

However, gas is one of the few deals in this part of the world. Airfare to the US is running about $1,800, an 8 oz package of cheese will set you back about $5-6 and US beef tenderloin (when we can get it) has been as high as $83 a kilo.

Of course, imported items are always more expensive due to shipping costs, etc, so it stands to reason that gas in an oil rich country would be dirt cheap.

I admit, when I go home to the US, I'm always shocked at first over the high price of gas. The price of just about everything else though, is a huge relief.

I realize your post was meant to elicit responses from others within the US, but having traveled extensively in Europe, we Americans certainly have nothing to complain about; gas prices, food prices, you name it.

My father in Florida says that gas is expected to hit $3 a gallon sometime this summer.
Re the European comparison, many Europeans drive diesel cars (which in Belgium is about 77 cents a liter). Many people also drive much more fuel efficient cars, diesel or gas. It's cheaper in the long run to pay $4.50 a gallon for gas with a car that gets nearly 50 miles to the gallon than to pay $3 a gallon for a car that gets 20 miles to the gallon.
If gas does go up to $3 a gallon, do you think this will have any effect on the sales of fuel-thirsty vehicles like SUVs or won't it matter?
(I saw my first Hummer in Brussels last week-end, the car looked ridiculous, as did the driver and passenger, a couple of nouveau rich Russians dripping in Gucci, Prada, etc.)

Congress is afraid to raise the gas tax. Not even enough to keep up with inflation! And that is exactly why we don't have enough mass transit or new roads to keep up with a growing population. Cowards!!!

Someone always has to bitch about SUVs when gas prices climb.
