California Weather Alert!

We have big Pacific Storm forecast for Tuesday & Wednesday, reaching even into Southern California.

People here do not know how to drive in the rain! The first big storm is a nightmare, the freeways are extra slippery.

Do as little driving those days as possible and check the weather forecasts.

logandog Oct 12th, 2009 06:50 AM

I sure hope it gets here we could use the rain.

LoveItaly Oct 12th, 2009 08:36 AM

And if you are not aware or do not remember, the California law is that if you have your windshild wipers on you MUST have your headlights on.

I know the storm is approaching but I wish it wasn't as I am having a house I own being renovated including all new windows. What a worry!

Safe driving everyone.

annesherrod Oct 12th, 2009 10:06 AM

Be safe everyone. I saw the satellite - yikes

mlgb Oct 12th, 2009 11:03 AM

Special caution around the recent burn areas, Pasadena Glendale etc. Good luck folks.

Of course, I just had my car washed, and am supposed to go to Disneyland Wednesday to see the special fireworks for Halloween.. strike on both counts, I think.

Dayenu Oct 12th, 2009 11:08 AM

OUCH! For now, it's only cloudy in San Francisco... I will try to keep you updated.

sf7307 Oct 12th, 2009 11:55 AM

But they're ominous looking clouds!

razzledazzle Oct 12th, 2009 12:37 PM

WHOA !
I just saw Noah floating by in Sonoma Creek !

:S-

Seriously, we watched vineyard workers putting down straw the last few days-supposed to help with erosion. There are still grapes on the vines, not the delicate white wine grapes, but still....For us the deck furniture is in-the plants on the decks are under shelter-Mr R5 is doing a battery and firewood run.
Poor baby has to go in at 5 AM tomorrow across the Richmond/
San Rafael bridge.
Hang on to your hats everyone ! and LI I hope your renovation
causes you very little worry !!

R5

Dayenu Oct 12th, 2009 12:45 PM

Getting darker outside...

LoveItaly Oct 12th, 2009 12:56 PM

Oh Razzle, I suspected that your dear husband will be on the bridge tomorrow, sigh. Safe wishes to him as it sounds like the wind will be terrible! I need to go to the store in a bit and need to check my battery supply also. I just checked, Razzle, and the General Contractor said the house will be fine. I sure hope so! I have confidence in him but still crossing my fingers of course. We don't usually get this predicated type of storm in the middle of October.

And speaking of getting cars washed. I haven't so I think tomorrow I will put in in a guest parking slot (no roof) for a few hours tomorrow as Mother Nature will clean it up!

Seriously, safe journeys and no flooding of homes..that is my wish to everyone! And you be careful walking and getting on and off the busses Dayenu!

razzledazzle Oct 12th, 2009 01:04 PM

Thank you for your good wishes, LI, I
will pass them on - I hope CalTrans will shut down
ANY of the bridges that are affected by the predicted winds.
I must go finish wrassling the last of the container tomatoes
to a covered spot...
And yes, Dayenu -Mind the Gap ! LOL !

R5

LoveItaly Oct 12th, 2009 01:11 PM

Razzle, I sure understand your comment about hoping CalTrains shuts any of the bridges if they becomes dangerous. I know three people here that have to drive across the Richmond Bridge going west and thought of them too. My plants will have to stay outside as I have nowhere to protect them. Well I actually I do but they are in pots that are too heavy for me to move. And thank you for giving that wonderful husband of yours my good wishes. ((L))

gualalalisa Oct 12th, 2009 01:45 PM

Getting really windy up here on the coast in Gualala (My office is right on the bluff overlooking the ocean). It's also sprinkling. Hubby just called and has the generator all ready to go. It's not a huge one but can connect us to our Direct TV, keep the fridge and coffee maker going and light a couple of lamps.

Best,
lisa

sf7307 Oct 12th, 2009 03:28 PM

<<<It's not a huge one but can connect us to our Direct TV>>>

And what could be more important I ask in all seriousness :-)

Dayenu Oct 12th, 2009 03:38 PM

"connect us to our Direct TV, keep the fridge and coffee maker going and light a couple of lamps" - Lisa, you've left out Fodor's connection!!

sf7307 Oct 12th, 2009 03:42 PM

Thanks for the reminder to get out my lanterns and check the batteries!

bear900 Oct 12th, 2009 09:58 PM

It's calm outside....quiet.....winds have died down.....bam!

If you wonder why we Californians freak out at large rain storms it's well, because we just don't get them that often.

We're probably due for an El Niño year. (We actually have an Al Nino living here on the central coast)

After all our raging forest fires that stripped the land bare, mudslides are a real danger in central and southern CA.

Here's a reminder of what happened on a stretch of coast just south of Santa Barbara. Looks like something that happens in Central or South America.

I remember a husband went out for just a short while to get some ice cream. When he returned his wife and two daughters were buried alive in mud that also buried the entire home.

Well here in the southern end of the Sacramento Valley the rain arrived a bit ago..very heavy rain but as of now no wind which is good. I hope all those commuting on the freeways and bridges get to work before the threatened heavy wind arrives.

Suzie Oct 13th, 2009 08:37 AM

Wow it's crazy windy and rainy. Every single umbrella is turned inside out.

Barbara Oct 13th, 2009 08:40 AM

It's not like that in San Diego. We have cloudy skies, but it's been mostly sunny this morning. We had a small amount of rain overnight, just enough to mess up your car and make the roads slick.

Dayenu Oct 13th, 2009 08:59 AM

Yesterday it sprinkled a little when I went home at 5.

This morning all the hell broke loose. The strongest heaviest sturdy rain, like a wall of water. The sidewalks were not just wet, but 2" deep!

At least, I didn't feel wind, no need to turn away from water coming into my face :)

There will be floods :( There will be mudslides :(

About half of our office are or will be late. One texted "traffic is a disaster, it's bumper to bumper" - gotta be a fun day :)

sf7307 Oct 13th, 2009 09:03 AM

<<<About half of our office are or will be late. One texted "traffic is a disaster, it's bumper to bumper" - gotta be a fun day >>>

Yup, took me 65 minutes to make a normally 35 minute trip. Accidents, street flooding, all kinds of impediments.

mlgb Oct 13th, 2009 09:34 AM

I just read on TA that Tioga Pass is closed due to snow...I hope we don't have any Fodorites stuck in unheated tent cabins in Curry Village!

So far in So Cal just a little sprinkle, I'm sure the deluge will arrive just as I reach Disneyland tomorrow.

Barbara Oct 13th, 2009 09:50 AM

mlgb, there isn't supposed to be a deluge in So. Cal.

razzledazzle Oct 13th, 2009 10:38 AM

We are in deluge mode in southern Sonoma County.
The tree in our front yard split in half -
half on Mr R5's car !!!!!
and did I tell you about the WIND-
YIEEEEEEE !!!!

Stay safe all, more later...
R5

mlgb Oct 13th, 2009 10:44 AM

Barbara, I hope not but I'm headed on up to my (flat) roof with a bucket of Henry's right now!

It won't take much more than a sprinkle for Disney to cancel the fireworks, I think.

MomDDTravel Oct 13th, 2009 10:55 AM

Not much rain here ...I was just at UCI medical center close to Disneyland and it was not raining at all...

sf7307 Oct 13th, 2009 11:18 AM

It's raining so hard here I cannot see beyond the balcony just below my office window (40th floor).

gualalalisa Oct 13th, 2009 12:31 PM

Power's been out at home for 8 hours now. And yes, thank God for my generator and DirecTV!

But power still on in office 1/8 of a mile away. Just my luck!

Agree with Razz, it is definitely a deluge here in Sonoma/Mendocino counties.

Be safe,
Lisa

Centralparkgirl Oct 13th, 2009 12:46 PM

sf7307 - 40th floor? Couldn't you work from home today?

I just woke up and realized my son is there and of course, he's not answering his cell. What are the chances that he's riding his bike in the middle of all that?

Be safe everyone!

sf7307 Oct 13th, 2009 12:51 PM

<<<What are the chances that he's riding his bike in the middle of all that? >>>

Pretty darn good (it's faster than walking). Really, this is just rain (and by the way, although it's still raining, it's perfectly clear from my office now - I can see the bridge, the piers, etc.). No lightning, no thunder, sure it's a little windy, although not so much at ground level. And no earthquakes, so what's the problem :-) ?

Centralparkgirl Oct 13th, 2009 12:55 PM

Thanks! I feel better now - a little. I'm a worried mom who can't seem to remember that he's on the other coast! And weather.com shows very high winds in PA. And why doesn't he answer his damn phone?

razzledazzle Oct 13th, 2009 01:06 PM

ACKKK
We had SEVEN trees go down - they all split and s l o w l y dropped until they touched the ground. Like watching it in slow motion...poor beautiful babies. Just hung over
like big arches...thank god no one was under them !

Hi Lisa !! Nice to see you here !
Sorry about the power at work, LOL

R5

Betsy Oct 13th, 2009 01:41 PM

We're busily hammering an ark together in the back yard. Rain is coming down in sheets, and the liquidambar tree has lost major limbs, but it's dry and cozy inside with no power outage (yet).

I'm making a quick run the the supermarket as soon as DH finishes the construction project.

Stay safe, Bay Area Fodorites. Hang in there Lisa and Raz.

Centralparkgirl Oct 13th, 2009 01:52 PM

Razzle - losing seven trees is terrible! I hope that's it. What happened to dh's car?

sf7307 Oct 13th, 2009 01:54 PM

Seven trees! How big were they?

cpg, he doesn't answer his phone because he's 22!! Or in class...or in the lab....

Centralparkgirl Oct 13th, 2009 02:19 PM

OK sf7307 - call me when you can't reach your baby during our next nor'easter - lol - which may be in a few days!

Dayenu Oct 13th, 2009 02:49 PM

"And why doesn't he answer his damn phone?" - don't worry, we'll have our revenge when they have their own children not answering ;)

Good one :) I am sure he is okay CPG -

LoveItaly Oct 13th, 2009 03:24 PM

Oh Razzle, I am so sorry about the downed trees. Did the one tree due a lot of damage to your husband's car?

A huge big branch got knocked off the 125 year old walnut tree. The noise made me jump out of my skin so I can only imagine how much noise your poor trees caused. My front garden is like a lake.

It is still raining here but now the wind has died down. It was horribly windy most of the day. I heard sirens constantly, no doubt some because of accidents on I-80.

Lost my internet and tv reception for hours but thankfully not the power.

I hope all of you at work get home safe and sound!
