"Morning Call" out in "Fat City"..not flooded and Cafe Du Monde WITHOUT the tourists!

ccolor Oct 20th, 2005 04:36 AM

I made our hotel reservations for a trip in May as soon as I heard it was open - now I'm REALLY ready to go. Only 7 more months!!

P_M Oct 20th, 2005 04:38 AM

I am thinking about posting this question on a seperate thread, but maybe someone here can answer. DH and I will be spending Thanksgiving day in Houston, and we were looking for a short road trip for the remainder of the weekend. Under normal circumstances I would consider NO, as it's not very far from Houston. But is it OK to go there yet?

GoTravel Oct 20th, 2005 04:50 AM

P_M, the longer tourists wait to go back, the harder it is to make money, the longer it takes for things to get back to normal.

Go! The locals will be appreciative of your guesture of goodwill and faith.

P_M Oct 20th, 2005 04:58 AM

I fully agree with you, GoTravel, and helping the local economy is one of the many reasons I would love to go to NO. But my concern is whether or not the hotels, restaurants and tourist sites will be open. I don't expect everything to be up and running so soon, but is there enough going to fill a weekend?

nolagirl Oct 20th, 2005 06:50 AM

PM, by Thanksgiving I truly think there will be MORE than enough going on and open to fill your weekend. Please come!! Feel free to check with me as it gets closer to make sure, but at this point, I'd say it's a safe bet. I returned permanently to my home in the French Quarter almost 3 weeks ago, and things are getting more and more like normal every day.

CAPH52 Oct 20th, 2005 07:58 AM

Very good to hear, nolagirl! Please keep *all* of us posted on the progress.

Kal, thanks for sharing that great news. Ummmmm.....beignets!!! i swear, there were more birds hovering around waiting for crumbs, than there were chickens on Kauai!!

it really IS great news. Was just putting together photo album of trip to NO last April (yes, I'm a prcrastinator) and feeling very sentimental about those pix of me and the girls, the powdered sugar, and the birds, wondering when it would open again, if ever.
Hurrayyy for Cafe du Monde and NOLA!!

Kal Oct 20th, 2005 03:42 PM

We need one in Kapaa.
One half Du Monde, other half Oly Cafe!

Hey...Olympic Cafe du Monde!!!!!

fairfax Oct 23rd, 2005 12:33 PM

Great news!!! I am sitting here in cold and damp Wales, and just listened to my old friend Chef Paul's interview on Fodor's. The background music - a jazz band - brought back so many nice memories of time in New Orleans and his hometown Opelousas, LA.

This brought a smile to my face on this cold wet day in Ottawa! I am drinking tea from my Cafe Du Monde mug!
