My 13 year old and I went to see Lestat and we both enjoyed it. The second act is better tha the first. It may not have been the best musical we ever saw but my 13 year old thought it was the best musical we saw in NYC. We saw Hairspray, Rent and Avenue Q too. She enjoyed them all but she declared Lestat her favorite. Hairspray was the most appropriate play out of those and a lot of fun. I wouldn't take an 11 year old to Rent or Avenue Q.

I should add Avenue Q had some parts not appropriate for a 13 year old either.

Last evening at Sardi's bar, I noticed the Lestat programs from two couple hovered next to me, so I asked how they had enjoyed the show (the matinee). The lady said it wasn't the worst show she ever saw and that some of the music was actually kind of good, and the lead has a wonderful voice, but the dialogue and story (or lack of it) is simply awful. With that, her friend leaned in and said "she's being overly kind -- it's a piece of s--t"! I nearly fell off my stool.

I just looked and they are selling tickets through 10/22/06. Melissa it is about vampires and has some sexual undertones. It is based on the first two books of Interview of a Vampire by Anne Rice. There was a movie with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt a while back which wasn't well done but should give you an idea of content.

Lestat closes on Sunday.
|
After only 39 performances.
Losing $40K every day, according to the Post. |
When it closes, the loss will be around $10 million.

After such a dreadful run in San Francisco, it's really a shame they couldn't revamp it enough to make it work here. Though out-of-town tryouts can be very helpful, I think the pressures of holding on to a Broadway theatre long enough to fix problems can really get in the way of the process.

Based on everything I read [I was lucky/smart enough not to get tickets for this bomb], the show was just about beyond saving almost from the beginning.

Ohhhhhhhh baby!!! Another B'way dust up????

An article in today's Times discusses all of the recent high-profile quick closings, including the Caine Mutiny show that is closing soon.

Okay, let me just tell you that I read the script and listened to the CD's (all sung by Elton John) way back before this ever got staged. I told the head of market research to advise the client that this production was a huge mistake. In their greed and haste to get this account, they stroked and stroked, and thus the musical was undead. I no longer work for them and truly hope this blows up in their face, in the form of a lawsuit. I don't think ANYBODY who saw this in the early stages was honest with them in the least, and that they underestimate the intelligence of their audience. Glad the stake went through the heart.
