Breakfast ideas tomorrow morning
 

I'm arriving early tomorrow AM on a red eye into JFK. My room may not be ready so I'll probably eat before checking in (or after dropping my bag)

It looks like the only food land side at T5 is Dunkin Donuts :( I'm taking the airporter to the Port Authority so is there someplace there along/close to 8th Ave I can pop in for breakfast?

My go to breakfast in NYC is from a local deli, any deli on just about any street. Bacon and egg on a roll, cheese if you are of that persuation. Regular coffee. Breakfast of champions and under $5

I find I can't eat after the red eye - just want to sleep a couple or hours first. Hopefully your hotel(you don;t say where) won't be full and will be able to let you check in right away. I would do a brunch that will last you until dinner.

Yeah - I hope the room is ready but I'm not expecting it. I was planning on a late lunch at Brasserie Ruhlmann before doing the TotR (and likely no dinner) so I will probably need to eat something in the AM.

Your hotel is likely to have a restaurant where you can have a full breakfast, but I would follow Deb's advice and go to a deli, where I would have a bagel with lox and cream cheese. If that doesn't appeal, NYC is filled with coffee shops like the one where Seinfeld and his crew used to hang out. They will bring you as much or as little as you want.

8th Avenue going north from PA at 44th Street on the left is "Smith's Bar and Restaurant" -- basic but good breakfast. You'll feel safe as the place is always filled with police and firefighters.

Or for more upscale but relaxing and nice -- The Hotel Intercontinental -- the restaurant is run by Todd English. On 44th, just around the corner to the left from 8th Avenue. You can even relax by the fireplace and sip coffee as long as you want.

I like Junior's for breakfast, and the branch on west 45th serves it until 10:30am. My second favorite place in the area is the coffee shop at the Edison Hotel on west 47th (the famous "Polish Tea Room").

Beyond that there are quite literally 100 places within a 3-block radius that serve breakfast, and you can certainly spend much more if you want something more upscale.

If you order "regular coffee" in NY-NJ and into Ne England, you will get something very different from what you would get if you ordered "just regular coffee" in Ohio, SF, Seattle, Miami and a host of other places.

Tell the waiter what you want specifically.

I wondered if anyone was going to ask what a "regular" coffee is!

For the record, it is coffee with milk and 2 sugars. I mentioned this to my husband, who although from NY, didn't know when asked MANY years ago if he wanted regular coffee. He thought it was regular vs. decaf. He says, yes, a regular. Imagine his surprise as he drinks his coffee black! My dad, had his "light and sweet" which was 3 sugars [!!!] and almost half milk.

Which hotel?

On 23rd street, b/w 7th and 8th avenue, is the Doughnut Plant. It sounds like you are near 45th based on other replies but your post doesn't mention which hotel/area.

8th (at 49th) - across from the Hilton Garden Inn.

Bette, I could be wrong, but when I walked up 8th a couple weeks ago, I thought that the Olympic was closed.

There is a cafe right across the street from Port Authority on 8th Ave.

It is next to the New York Times Building at the corner of W 41 St.

If you walk down W 41st towards 6th Ave, you
will run into Bryant Park.

Lots of eating places around the park.

There is an Au Bon Pain in Port Authority Building.

There are TWO Port Authority buildings, by the way.

In the event . . . No breakfast at all. My flight was scheduled to leave at 11:49 PM, but it didn't even arrive til 00:30 and we took off at 01:10 and arrived at JFK two hours late. And THEN to facilitate quick boarding the desk staff requested anyone who could to gate check their carry ons. I was reluctant - but doing my civic duty :) I gate checked.

Well at JFK they couldn't open the hold and it took nearly an hour for my little carry on to come down the chute. And THEN it took more than an hour on the airporter including a transfer from a big bus to a smaller van at penn station. And THEN - not sure if it was the lack of sleep, the super heated bus, the bumpy roads - or all three - but I was totally nauseous all the way - so much so that I a plastic bag out of my handbag cuz I just knew projectile vomit was coming any minute :D it was horrible. But getting out of the van at the PA and walking in the cold solved that problem. Long story - but that's why I didn't have to kill time having b'fast.

I'm staying at the Milford plaza . . . I know, I know huge 'nasty' hotel. But the reason I'm here is because of a terrific travelzoo deal last Fall. Upgraded, city view room for $99 all inc. can't beat that - and I got a surprisingly large, corner room w/ river and city views. Queen bed, desk/chair, occasional chair, walk in closet.

Had a late lunch at Brasserie Ruhlmann and that will be my only meal of the day.

Damn- it is COLD out !!!

Now I'm worried the next storm on Thursday will screw up my flight home . . .

Meant that is the Milford's reputation. But apparently they've upgraded all the rooms.

So how are the rooms now that they've been redone? Fairly fancy? Bathrooms improved?

Not fancy - more minimalist on a budget. But I'm actually pretty impressed - especially for the price. Two bedside lamps, floor lamp, ceiling fixture, extra outlets on the desk top and on one of the night stands, 42 inch flat screen (or maybe bigger). Very Large wall mirror. The bath is small but has a deep soaker tub, rain shower head and curved shower curtain.

The furniture is sort of ikea-ish.

The Milford Plaza is in the latter stages of a massive renovation that will pull the hotel up to the level of a nice, respectable 3-star hotel. It's no longer a bad place to stay at all. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't seen it for a while.

But if I recall, the lobby isn't quite done yet, right? Or is it?

I'll just be glad when they get it done. Trying to walk along 8th through their maze of scaffolding while the tour busses are loading and unloading and hoards of high school kids who are staying there are lining up under the scaffolding. . . well, it certainly is worth walking across the street for that block and then back again after that block.

No scaffolding - apparently more updating due for restaurant and such. This morning I went to the 9-11 memorial and rode the Staten Island ferry. Right now I'm in the cafe in the Met looking across a snowy Central Park having salmon and a champagne cocktail :) Tonight - Kinky Boots . . Did I mention, DAMN its cold !!!

I hope you can make it to the Doughnut Plant. Heavenly doughnuts. There is one on the LES as well as in Chelsea.

Dean and DeLuca in Rock Center carries them, too, but only weekdays, not weekends.

Did the Dean and Deluca in Rockefeller Center move to a nearby location?

When Keith and I walked by this summer after coming home from Venice, there was a Bouchon Bakery in that location--across from the Today Show. The windows were painted over so we couldn't see inside.

We were going to get a coffee but when we saw the new Bouchon, we went to a Cafe Europa on 6th Ave instead.

Yeah I know about the storm. A plan B doesn't help much since all the options will be similarly impacted. So I'm just waiting til tomorrow AM to see how things and I'll just go w/ the flow.

Thursday's weather is going to be treacherous and as someone pointed out, who knows where your plane has started it's travel.

Looks like pretty much all flights this morning and most this afternoon from LGA have been cancelled. Alternative plan?

We're headed into NYC tomorrow by train, bus, car, or horse drawn sleigh for our three nights first anniversary weekend. We're going to get there somehow, I swear!

So far my flight is still scheduled but my guess it will be cancelled too. The 'turn over' is supposed to be around noon-ish so if it does change to mostly rain then, some flights late this afternoon may go.

But the hotel has given me late check out and I can keep the same room (at the same super duper rate -yay!) if I need it. But tomorrow may be as bad as today since more snow is due over night.

So far haven't hear from AA.

If those three beautiful Huskies my neighbor walks by my house every morning come up missing tomorrow, you'll know where they went!

Loooooong day - and long story. Ended up on a DFW flight that diverted through <i>Nashville</i>. AA recommended I get on an earlier flight because they might close the airport again before my 4:50 flight. I was in First and they got me standby on the 12:55 flight - last FC seat. But after they closed the door and were spraying the plane w/ de icer, etc -- the pilot comes on the PA and says -- "In case you are wondering why we are going to Nashville . . . Because the runway is so short due to the ice and snow we can either leave 46 of you here and have a full load of fuel . . . OR we can get you all to Dallas - But we only have enough fuel to get to Nashville where we'll fuel up and proceed to DFW. And no, the door is closed so you can't get off now."
