Best Western Peppertree Spokane
WE PAID BUT LEFT IT WAS SO BAD...We (husband, myself and 12 year old son) booked online through travelocity a half hour before arriving, but when we finally found the place we were shocked at the outside of this dingy place. Since we'd already paid, we figured we were stuck and hoped it would look better inside.
No such luck. The entire place was old and in need of a good cleaning. Dirty elevator and hallway rugs. Coat hangers and trash in the hallways. After viewing three separate rooms, we were at a loss at what to do and went back to the lobby figuring we'd settle for one of the rooms. We had to wait for one pair of truckers check in while the young woman behind the desk endured the flirting of the drunk one with the prison tattoos. He wanted to know where the closest liquor store was, then argued when he didn't like her answer. His companion was leering nearby showing his remaining teeth. A second group of 4 truckers checked in and wanted to know the price of an in-room massage ($30 1/2 hour, $50 hour). It was clear they thought they were getting something "interesting". At this point, we'd had enough. Dirt and dinginess is one thing, but we simply did not feel safe staying there, so we left. They informed us we would not get our money back since the room was prepaid. So we went to the Hampton Inn and had a beautiful, clean, safe room. The Hampton Inn was everything that these reviews claim of the Best Western. This Best Western Peppertree is a dive. I contacted travelocity and the Best Western Corporation and asked for refunds. Best Western Corp contacted the owner who stated the maintenance reports indicated it was clean and that they can't refuse patrons based on appearance. Travelocity ignored my request! Moral of the story: if you don't have to book online via travelocity, don't! Oh, and I agree, hotels can't turn away prospective guests based on appearance, so steer clear of the Best Western Peppertree and be sure to stay at the Spokane Hampton Inn near the airport! |
You already posted this under the don't book at Travelocity banner. Isn't once enough? Other posters have commented you should have driven to the hotel and inspected it BEFORE paying. Chalk this up to experience or being tired, but IT'S ENOUGH, your son learned the $96 lesson.

momof2~ is that located in the valley off of I-90? My dh worked at a truck stop during college(Fancher location near Les Schwabb), and oh, the stories he told..
I admit, I used to love teasing the toothless wonders on the c.b., but it was a short lived hobby.. the ones who were able to pronounce two syllable words were somewhat amusing during the wee hours;) a shame to generalize though.. many truckers are good clean family people, who can pronounce nuclear.. and let us not forget mother truckers as well. Hope your next trip through Spokane is better.. we like Residence Inn, Wolff Lodging apartments(three night minumum however), or downtown near the park. Try to put it behind you and if it looks bad in the lobby, that is the first gut check telling you to run, don't walk, and call an 800 number requesting a better location because of what you observed.. thank heavens you didn't stay and make the best of it.. sometimes, the toothless buy that cheap domestic beer and raise all sorts of cain once they are showered and wanna "talk purty".. sounds like you made the best choice for your family and don't worry, we all learn from experience.. take care, J. |

Spokane has some pretty bad dumps, and you certainly had every right to expect more from the Best Western logo.
When I had a similar experience, I got satisfaction by calling Best Western and explaining my experience to a service representative (not a reservation clerk). If you do this, focus on the dirt, dinge and gloom--not on other guests. Next time, ask for hotel suggestions at this forum and check property ratings at tripadvisor.com (where I see your review of Peppertree). Hilton Garden Inn, Oxford Suites, and (as you found) Hampton Inn are good places to spend a night in Spokane. |
We booked a hotel in Toronto once that was almost too gross to stay even one night in - so I do have some empathy, even though it appears you do not think so from your responses to my responses on your other thread.
I have just checked the hotel website - it has 23 photos, although not all of them of the actual hotel. If you complain to BW, I think your only case is one of misrepresentation. I would skip any comments about the other guests, since not feeling comfortable with the other paying customers will likely not be a convincing argument. By looking at the hotel photo gallery, I suggest you compile whatever objective differences you found in the website photos versus your observations. If you choose to request a refund based on safety, I think you need to be more objective than mentioning that they were truckers with poor manners and questionable traveling companions. Creepy is not the same as unsafe. So stick with the misrepresentation angle if you want to pursue it. |
Like I said in your OTHER post on this same subject, I think your "review" would have more credence if you didn't reference prison tattoos or missing teeth. What does THAT have to do with how clean or safe a hotel is?

I think it is reasonable for you to be concerned about safety when you booked into a motel with people wandering around the halls with "prison tattoos," "missing teeth," "leering," and hoping for the max from a "massage."

If tattoos and missing teeth bother a person, I would suggest staying out of Whole Foods, and Powells Book store also (Portland Or) Actually, stay out of certain parts of NY state and Florida...hmmm did I miss any others? :)

Yes, but Bellagio is very upscale and has hundreds (thousands) of rooms abd it is located in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip. On the other hand, the Peppertree is located in a marginal neighborhood, has many fewer rooms, and it has spooky hallways. The comparion doesn't fit.

happy, i got lost in the Bellagio hallways so i think they are scary. (of course i was on the wrong floor, but that's for another time) and i'm sure more crime is committed on the strip than in the best western spokane neighborhood.

Yes, it's the one right of I-90. You seem to be familiar with the place. Most of the posters on here took one look at the tripadvisor photos and reviews and decided I was a stereotyping snob! Obviously, you couldn't pay me to stay there! I guess I was willing to pay NOT to stay there. Your comments give me comfort in knowing we made the right choice by following our instincts. |

Once when we were traveling, we stayed at a dump(chosen by husband's co-worker) and the manager had to evict the guy from the room before we could check in.. **the shower curtain was missing, but what was more alarming, there were scratch marks on the door, as if someone was being held there and frantic to escape. A liquor store and video rental, plus a massage parlor, all within walking/spitting distance are always a cautionary sign, as is prominent display of the following items in the glass case: *Double Bubble container with assorted condoms, free...... *duct tape, always a bad sign *rubber gloves *body outline tape *ipecac syrup to induce vomiting *framed photo of Jimmy Hoffa in lobby *disposable cameras *edible underwear(especially after Labor Day) *old John Holmes 8mm films *rental brchures for portable cement mixers, and a "rent one day/get one free" offer ((Y))Again, I'm proud of you for leaving the premises, J. |

Hey, no one was born knowing all the inside tips.. we have all been under pressure and hindsight always makes sense later, but you were wise.. I shudder to think of the bedbugs, pet dander, toenail clippings and horrific stains not seen by the human eye had you thrown caution to the wind. The screaming alone would have made sleep impossible. it takes years of sceintific study and consulting strangers on a message board to really make the smart choices in life, (and wise alcohol use) to have a lovely hotel experience.. look at it this way, you have something to laugh about for years to come.. give the boys comical names like Cletus and Leevon and chalk it up to a walk on the wild side. p.s. Next time, go further east towards the Pine or Sullivan exit,or closer still if you must, Argonne, where there are a few decent places off the freeway, plus clean restaurants,(about two miles from your previous area or stay downtown near the park).. **and stay off Sprague without a NASCAR approved helmet! best, J. |
Every time I drive down New York Ave in DC, I feel very sorry for the trusting tourist who booked a room at some of the hotels just inside the NE city limits. I checked and they are listed on Travelocity. Those hotels are truly scary and not anywhere near the attractions most tourists want to see. Granted, they have low ratings; but why are they listed at all?

Oh momof2~ I looked up the dreadful place, and just realized it's Geiger location, now let's make clear one thing.. the truckers of the West Side are a much different breed than the valley truckers.
The ones in the valley have usually had the feathers and cow chips sprayed out while fueling up, the West bound ones have most likely passed through Montana under cover of darkness for multiple crimes of passion. Only once did I venture into the area because of a bbq rave, but had my tear gas locked and loaded. There is no pepper tree, the urination killed it in the eighties. False advertising at it's very worst. *Please heed my previous advice and move further east should you venture through again, J. |
Momof2- hoping you understand that no one (or at least not me) thinks you should have checked your family into a disreputable hotel. it sounds sleezy, putting it mildly.
Why I (and I assume others) have been giving you are hard time is... you booked a hotel without seeing it, when you were only 1/2 hour away, then got mad at Trip Advisor, and posted three different complaints about it here. Lesson learned, let it go... |
momof2 - let me say that I think you have handled all the discussion on multiple threads here with admirable grace. While you have received some concrete and good suggestions, you have also, as you know, been the inspiration for multiple jokes and some snide comments. You have responded to all reasonable comments with dignity and without falling to the level of some of the comments here. You even seem to have some sense of humor about the initial situation.
So while I do not agree with everything you have posted, I certainly applaud the way you have handled all the discussion here. It is not easy to get slammed on this board. (PS - and now we all know about different areas in Spokane, what prison tatoos look like, more than we want to know about room massages) |

"No teeth, tattoos? No service". A Best Alternative Lodging Inc. Leering in the lobby is not allowed. Our desk help has been spayed and neutered. Geez, a white haired hooligan leered at me recently at a quik stop when I only popped in for wheat bread. It gave me the willies, because clearly, he had "idears".. what he was capable of, I shudder to think, what with the free samples available to anyone calling 800 numbers. I still like Neopolitan's policy of puting the drunk drivers back out on the street instead of giving them a room for the night.
Those drunks could make too much noise, wander into your room, bump into things, urinate in public, blow chunks, go to the bar for more drinks, fester, and flash. Much safer with drunks behind the wheel of a car than in your hotel. |
well, truckers need love, and it's a free market.. but I don't want to hear them in the throes of cinnamon hot pleasure either..
No one addressed the rudeness of the fellas, could they not have waited a bit or called the desk, or searched the yellow pages before being so brazen with their queries? a shame really, since the big rigs often have sleep quarters.. sounds like the boys needed a shower at a truck stop, and after biscuits and gravy, they might have been more civil.. one hairy hand over the other, delicately declaring "I can't believe it's not butter".. I would go so far as to say the severely inebriated should even be asked to leave, but one knows what happens in Vegas, so that is a moot point. |
