Best Steak House and Seafood

Need some recommendations for the best steakhouse and also the best seafood restaurant in Midtown or surrounding areas.

Give us a price range!

Give us a city!

For Lobster and Steak try the Palm on Second Ave. It is not at all fancy but, it can be a bit pricey. Usually the food is very good. You might run into a celebrity.

There are "midtown" areas in many cities. Please specify, Linda.

I agree...the Palms is always great..and also ya might want to give Smith and Wolensky's (?)..a try....I believe they are located on 49th and 3rd Ave...

Smith & Wollensky you can get in too many cities across the country... my dad swears by Sparks! also you can try Redeye Grill. Milos, Oceana, Esca,Tropica... all upscale seafood.

Sorry!! New York City Steakhouse and seafood is what we are looking for. Money is no object. I know there is a good place in Brooklyn but do not want to travel that far. Thanks

I'd forget Esca. We ate there in December and were horribly disappointed. Dozens of posts, some here, and many on New York's Chowhound board have said the same thing. If money is no object and you want fine seafood, you couldn't do better than Le Bernadin! It will be a memorable evening!

OliveOyl Mar 20th, 2001 07:23 AM

Patrick,

Didn't know, until opening it, that this was a NYC post where I have virtually nothing to say, but I'm curious Patrick, as to your opinion of Bern's? No need to add the city--I'm sure you know.

get in a cab and go to peter luger's in brooklyn. you will not be disappointed, i promise. always in the running for best steakhouse in the country!

Bern's or Burn's? If you mean the one in Tampa, Fla. it's the best! Its been along time since the last time I was there but it was great in the 80's

Caitlin Mar 20th, 2001 10:08 AM

There is a new steakhouse on Water St. in lower Manhattan--just north of South Street Seaport--called MarkJoseph that is run by a bunch of Luger's alumni, from management to waiters, and has had good word of mouth saying the steak is essentially comparable to Luger's (same cut, style of cooking, presentation, etc.), as are the appetizers and sides.

Hey, lets jump outta the box a little and look south ... way, way south, even past Berns of Tampa ... in fact overnight from Miami. To Buenos Aires. Lets take it downtown, baby, to BA ... for the cut our your life. I am talking about a steak that four can share, not one of those weeney things where you have to tell 'em mash or fries, pilaf or corn. I'm talking real beef from the pampas. Followed by a tango bar. Now, there's a meal to fly for. Ciao

Hey L! Did that in '89, while passing through BA on the way to an appointment with large truchas in Patagonia. The restaurant was La Cabana. Several rounds of drinks, huge salads, an assortment of starters, 48-oz porterhouses that covered the plate, numerous bottles of excellent wine, stunning desserts, attentive waiters, yadda, yadda . . . Total bill, including a generous tip, was the equivalent (in Australes, at the time) of $100 US for four of us. Sadly, them days are gone forever.

Never made it to the tango club after.

To Olive Oyl: yes I like Bern's, but haven't been there in a long time. Don't really get to Tampa that much. Love the martinis (or my dry robroy)where they bring the eyedropper to your table for the vermouth. I don't do desserts, but the dessert room is over the top in bordello decor. Had a funny night at Berns a number of years ago. A young couple about 21 proceded to have a huge fight during dinner. They called the waiter over and complained loudly about everything. They demanded to see the manager. They screamed and yelled. Finally they stood up and literally started throwing their food all over the room. They were escorted to the lobby. As we left we found them there, the police had been summoned. Apparently it was their version of "performance theatre" and a way to be ushered out, hopefully without paying, but Berns didn't buy into it. They demanded payment for the meal and the expensive wine they had ordered. The couple had no money and a credit card that was no good. Their car was impounded and the police were called. Nothing like a little entertainment with our meal!
