best place for clam chowder

As a native Massachusetter, I have tasted many different places around the state and in New England that serve excellent clam chowder. One of my most memorable experiences was in Boston at the Union Oyster House. What do you feel is the best clam chowder?

Oh, lawsey. The banning must be over.

Do you ever have any actual TRAVEL advice to offer?

Captain Parker's in South Yarmouth on Cape Cod won so many WCOD Cape Cod Chowder Festivals WCOD had to put them in a Hall of Fame and bar them from competition.

So Captain Parker's went on to win the Boston Chowder Festival and then the Newport International Chowder Festival which I guess makes them World Champions!

HI..
Hands down...Pike Place Chowder in downtown Seattle a block up from the famous Pike's Market and they have the best Chowder and Seafood Bisque, I have ever tasted in my life!!!
Funny that you asked this because I was craving it today but the shipping charges equal the chowder cost..which I do understand but $20+ just to get it to me overnight..I can wait..I'll probably give in..

For New England "Chowda" lovers, a great take is the Newport chowder cook off first weekend June - lots of fun and great chowda !

I love clam chowder.A pity we do not have it in Belgium. I sometimes try to make a nice seafood and mussels chowder but the missing ingredient "clams" is not available here.I have two places in the states in mind with memorable clam chowder =Mc Cormich & smiccls on first ave in Seattle and a restaurant on Monterrey wharf(they sell the chowder there in cans to take home).Greetings from Belgium and be nice to each other, life is to short.Paul

Are we talkin' red or white?

zootsi Mar 31st, 2006 04:46 AM

As a New Englander, I hate to admit it, but I prefer New York Style (red), although i've had some great white chowder up in Maine at Mike's Clam Shack in Wells. The Monmouth Queen diner in New Jersey used to do a great red chowder.

Red Chowder is not allowed north of New Haven - it is a new Federal Law. Unless it is called something like fish stew, cioppino, Portuguese fish soup, etc.

If you ask for red chowder in Boston area and the server is also allowed to ask you to leave the premises.

Oh Gail, too funny....but so true, we New Englanders love our white chowda....

Hi-Try the Barnicle in Marblehead, Mass. Not only is it a cute, local spot right on the ocean - but their clam chowder is excellent, along with the rest of their menu. Yumm.

Aunt Carrie's in Narragansett , Rhode Island gets my vote. Phyliss' in Milford , CT. was another place that also made a fantastic "white" chowder.

Even within the white chowdah types, there are variations. I was always told that the real "Rhode Island-style" has a more thin and watery broth.

Where did the thickened-with-flour chowdah originate?

I agree that the red stuff is blasphemy. I don't know how the now-defunct Rocky Point Amusement park in RI got away with serving that for all those years.

To get back to the original question, I have always liked the way it is done at the Black Pearl in Newport.

I think the west coast is the new Boston, as it's hard to find red chowda around here (SF bay area) any more, LOL. The white is just too creamy for me.
