Best Pizza

YO aside from NYC, who has the best pizza? I don't mean that pan made stuff either!

Pizzaboy Aug 12th, 2002 09:03 AM

Any Pizza Hut, hands down. Domino's a short second.

Pizzaboy Aug 12th, 2002 09:07 AM

whooops! Almost forgot about Elio's and Stoffers.

Gotta disagree about the Hut, any time I've tried it when away from home I thought it was really, really bad. If I have to have pizza outside of NYC, I order the thin-crust pizza from Domino's. It is nothing like *real* pizza but it'll do in a pinch. The worst thing, IMO about not-NY pizza is the crust, they never get it right. I They can't get good semolina flour west of the Hudson or something. Domino's thin-crust is at least crispy, and if you get fresh veggie toppings it's all right.

Duke,

Do I detect a tad of hostility toward us East Coast folk? You can enjoy your deep dish pizza, while you watch your pathetic Bears, Cubs, Bulls and White Sox.

Suge Knight, Snoop and Dr. Dre say the East Coast sucks and is goin' down!

The Route 66 restaurant in Cortona, Italy, in the heart of Tuscany serves a pizza that I feel is truly the best. It is somewhat of a thin crust, with mounds of prosciutto, arugula, and tomatoes. The thought of it is making me hungry!!!

The winner is:

Pepe's Apizza, New Haven, CT!!!!

Vita Aug 12th, 2002 11:15 AM

Don't know if it's even fair to include Tuscany in the equation here, but one of the best pizzas that I've had was also in Tuscany - in Siena to be exact - at this place called Cavallo Bianco. Other than that, it really just depends. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a thick crust, sometimes thin crust. Ratzi's in College Park, MD, had good vegan and cheese pizzas. I think they might be closed now. :(

The best red potato pizza can be found at Willington Pizza in Willington,Ct. I'ts right down the road from Uconn! The red potato pizza is great w/bacon & broccoli! They also make a great seafood pizza!

Ellen Aug 12th, 2002 12:53 PM

Whoa!! Wait a minute!! Red potato pizza?? I've had pizza in many places from NYC to Chicago to San Fran to Siena Italy and Rome Italy. Never had I ever had a pizza with potatos on it - I think I'll take mine with a bread crust thank you. And purist that I am - there is no other pizza that will come any closer to heaven than those pizzas made in Old Forge PA. (Revello's, Ghigarelli's, Arcaro & Gennell's. These are truly magnificient pizzas that people wait for at least an hour to get a table and order a pizza. If this is a true travel thread - you ought to go try it sometime --YO

I once had a pizza in Vienna with corn and potatoes and onion on it (their recipe, not my choice).
It was without a doubt the most horrid pizza I've ever smelled or eaten (didn't eat much of it).

nancy Aug 12th, 2002 01:18 PM

Ellen, The red potato pizza has a thick crust. It is a white pizza. It has potato slices, chedar cheese,& bacon or broccoli. It kind of tastes like a baked stuffed potato. Because it is so rich I usually order 1/2 red potato & 1/2 mozz.,peppers, mushroom, & sausage. They also have great taco pizzas, chicken fahita pizzas, as well as calzones & pastas. You can end the meal with great desserts which includes icecream from the Uconn dairy! Try the Kara Walters sundae! Also if you are into sports you can sometimes run into the Uconn Men's & Women's Basketball & soccer teams after their games. Stop by if you're in the area!!

Guiseppe's Pizza in Rockville, Maryland
Ellen Aug 12th, 2002 02:42 PM

Hey Nancy - that does sound pretty good!!!

When I'm up that way - I will give it a try - right now I'm in DC where most of the pizza (except probably Giusseppe's in Rockvill) is not what I'd refer to as pizza. We have one pizza maker (very successful) makes a cookie crust base.
