Best Broadway Musical

What is the best broadway muscial to see next week? Mother/daughter trip, ages 60 and 36.

maryanntex Oct 28th, 2010 06:46 AM

Definitely a matter of taste. Have you two seen lots of/many/some other musicals? Do you like traditional or something new and different? If you haven't seen "Jersey Boys," that would be my #1 choice. My daughter and I also loved "In the Heights," and liked (but didn't love) "West Side Story."

SusieQQ Oct 28th, 2010 07:08 AM

I loved La Cage Aux Folles and A Little Night Music.

If it's for next week your choices will be limited unless you want to pay a huge amount to a scalper the biggest hits - Wicked and Jersey Boys are probably completely sold out at this point - although you can try the official on-line tickets sellers.

I would go to Playbill.com and read the reviews to see whay YOU will enjoy. (I think in the Heights is great - but not sure if you're the right age groups; West Side Stoy is a classic and a friend who say La Cage said is was very good.)

Here's a list of what sold last week at the 1/2 price TKTS booth-
http://www.tdf.org/TDF_SupportPage.aspx?id=68&do=v

You should be able to get tickets for these shows (full price) and there's a chance they'll be on sale at the booth.
I'd rather buy tix using a discount from broadwaybox.com than stand in line though.

From that list, I'd go with -
Billy Elliott ++
Chicago +
Driving Miss Daisy - not a musical, but I want to see Vanessa Redgrave
In the Heights +
Jersey Boys +++ )especially for your mom)
La Cauge Aux Folles ++ I've not seen it but reviews are good
Mamma Mia - maybe
Million Dollar Quartet ++++++ my favorite new show
Mary Poppins +
Promises Promises - maybe, if your mom liked The Apartment
Phantom of the Opera - a classic
West Side Story +++

+ my ratings for you and your mom

Have a great trip!

As others have said, it's hard to know what someone else will enjoy, but another good source of information about Broadway shows and discounts is TheaterMania.com. Just go to the Broadway Discount Page at http://www.theatermania.com/broadway/discount-tickets/.
They also have off-Broadway shows if that’s more up your alley.

What shows have you seen that you liked? That would give us a better idea of what you'd enjoy.

Becky_Moyer Oct 28th, 2010 12:01 PM

We have enjoyed a wide variety of Broadway musicals: Chicago, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins Broadway, a couple I can't remember, Phantom, 42nd Street, Fiddler

Well I'd say "A Little Night Music" with Bernadette P & Elaine S., La Cage or In the Heights but there are other good options. Why not go to the left column of broadwaybox.com and see which have decent seats at good prices? Each of the shows has an official website with some sample footage. Links from here http://www.playbill.com/events/listing/1.html

As said before, it's very subjective. imo, La Cage was the best musical that I've seen all year. I enjoyed A Little Night Music, but La Cage was far more entertaining.

We recently returned from a NYC trip and saw five Broadway plays. The two we loved best were Billy Elliott and La Cage. Next to Normal was OK, albeit the story line not the best. The two we liked least were West Side Story and we absolutely hated Wicked (I know, we are in the minority but there ARE some of us out there).

It is all a matter of taste and preference of course. We thought the acting in Billy Elliot as well as the singing and dancing were superb. La Cage had us rolling in the aisles with laughter - it was SUPER. We love West Side Story - the movie and the music This play just did not cut it as we were VERY disappointed. We had such high hopes for Wicked that I actually bought tickets at full price months in advance. Nothing that we thought would be good, was actually good. The leads were bad, the acting was bad, the scenery was only so-so; the only good thing were our seats !!!

starrs Oct 29th, 2010 06:28 AM

That's okay. Different folks like different things.
It's hard to believe that someone posted that there weren't any good/memorable songs in South Pacific...but they did.
Wicked is out as an option for them anyway. ;)

MiamiBeachMomma Oct 29th, 2010 09:55 AM

Flame123 - I thought I was the only one who didnt love Wicked!! I wasn't moved at all by the music or the story!!
starrs - I saw South Pacific last year at Lincoln Center after seeing the movie countless times. I LOVED it - I cried and cried even though I knew the end :)
We are coming to NY soon and I feel like there is nothing new and fabulous to see. Udsually every year there is an "it" show. Broadway writes where are you??

MiamiBeachMomma Oct 29th, 2010 09:56 AM

oops - I meant Broadway writers!!

HowardR Oct 29th, 2010 10:41 AM

MiamiBeachMomma, have you seen Billy Elliot yet? It's fairly new and it's fabulous! (PS: We too are among the vocal minority who disliked Wicked.)

TC Oct 29th, 2010 11:06 AM

You said it Starrs; "Different folks like different things."

I absolutely hated Billy Elliot and can't understand why its on everyone's list.
Wouldn't spend time or money on the "jukebox musicals" -- Memphis, MDQ, Jersey Boys, etc.
Mildly entertained by Chicago, even with friends in the cast.
Loved Wicked, In the Heights, La Cage, South Pacific, A Little Night Music.

There's just no one who can say what is "the best". Its all so much a matter of taste.

Flame123 Oct 29th, 2010 11:32 AM

MiamiBeachMomma - nope, we hated it too!! I am wondering now, in retrospect after being there and seeing the play, where WAS everyone who didn't like it? All I heard and read were just that it was so great. And indeed you cannot get tickets at TKTS, heck you even have to get them weeks in advance!!

HowardR - re Billy Elliot, we have already "established" that our likes are similar on Broadway!!!
