Bea Arthur Closes April 14

Too bad, we were really looking forward to seeing her in May.

Tele-Charge very gracious about crediting my credit card for full amount.

Annie Mar 27th, 2002 12:05 PM

Nina, glad that telecharge was so accommodating, is there something else you were interested in seeing?

Maria Mar 27th, 2002 12:30 PM

Why is it closing?

kieeeeeel Mar 27th, 2002 12:36 PM

Man, Kielbasa man is majorly bummed on this one. He was counting on it.

Kielbasa man loves BEA!!! She's a comic genius!! Anyone know why she ain't playin no more?

Nina Mar 27th, 2002 01:14 PM

I'm Not Rapport was scheduled to open at the Booth, but they prolonged the opening, and so Bea Arthur extended. We were thrilled because she was originally scheduled to close prior to our arrival in New York in May.

Apparently I'm Not Rapport has now decided to open sooner, and has reclaimed the theater during her extension. I'm thinking maybe the Tony nominations had something to do with it.

Annie, we already have tickets for four other shows, Proof, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Elaine Stritch, and Sweet Smell of Success which we unfortuately before it opened.

I still have list a mile long, including, Urinetown, Godfadda, and Noises Off, so we may buy in advance or just play it by ear when we get there.

Howard Mar 27th, 2002 04:22 PM

A more likely reason the show is closing is probably because business has fallen off!

arjay Mar 28th, 2002 02:39 AM

Howard: When she opened, it was posted as a limited run...or is that just theater code for "let's see if this baby has legs"???

Howard Mar 28th, 2002 04:45 AM

Arjay, sometimes it is a euphemism for "Let's see how it does" and sometimes not.
In any case, the show was a hit in that it did pay back its investment!

PB Mar 28th, 2002 06:29 AM

Saw it in LA in December. It probably closed because it was not very good.

Ellen Mar 28th, 2002 07:19 AM

If I'm Not Rappaport is on its way to NYC, jump on it! I just saw it a few weeks ago at the Papermill Playhouse in Milburn NJ. Stars are Judd Hirsch and Ben Vereen. They are terrific together on stage. Not sure if the production you are referring to is starring that cast, but if so, you are in for a treat. Judd was in the production years ago in nyc, but I am going to have to go through my playbill archives to see if it was broadway or off broadway and who co-starred with him. In any event, it is a great replacement if you can't see Bea!

Howard Mar 28th, 2002 08:00 AM

Yes, Ellen, it is the same production of I'm Not Rappaport.
And, to answer your other questions: It was on Broadway and Cleavon Little was the co-star. What do I win?

Nina Mar 28th, 2002 08:20 AM

My guess why Bea Arthur closed was way off. She was originally scheduled for Jan. 29 - March 10.

I'm Not Rapport, with Hersh and Vereen, will probably open in July, venue unknown, according to the the Playbill site.

Nina Mar 28th, 2002 08:23 AM

Maybe the third time is the charm ... have to correct those typos .... Rappaport.

x Mar 28th, 2002 08:27 AM

Bea Arthur is still alive????

Ellen Mar 28th, 2002 10:05 AM

Very good Howard! You only win a prize if you can tell me what year. I am guessing 8.

Howard Mar 28th, 2002 11:10 AM

Sorry, Ellen, but I can only narrow down to between 8 and 14 years ago. Don't I at least get a consolation prize?

InquiringMinds Mar 28th, 2002 11:36 AM

Is Bea Arthur a man that had a sex change operation???

xxx Mar 28th, 2002 12:59 PM

She played that show on tour here in Chicago. Rumor was that after intermission half the audience had left, so they were reworking it without an intermission to make it harder for people to leave. Sounds like you're not missing much.

Patrick Mar 28th, 2002 01:07 PM

I'm Not Rappaport was on Broadway in 1986 winning the Tony for best play and the Outer Circle Critics' Award for outstanding play. That production starred Judd Hirsch and Ossie Davis, who may have been later replaced by Cleavon Little as stated above, I'm not sure. The movie was made 10 years later in 1996 with Ossie Davis repeating his role and Walter Matthau playing the Judd Hirsch role. The current production should be wonderful!!

Patrick Mar 28th, 2002 01:20 PM

A thousand pardons to Howard. Cleavon Little was indeed the original with Judd Hirsch on Broadway. He was replaced by Ossie Davis. I was looking at some information about the film which actually stated that "Ossie Davis repeated his original starring role from the Broadway production . . ." But that information is apparently wrong.

Is Bea Arthur still closed? I read somewhere that she was going to reorganize and reopen under the name Maude Findlay.

Florida E Jan 2nd, 2003 01:30 PM

Is Bea Arthur still ALIVE?!

katie Jan 2nd, 2003 02:47 PM

Bea Arthur IS still alive and I still think she is a Man.
Howard, you should win a free trip somewhere for not only being so helpful, but for being right:)

Howard Jan 2nd, 2003 04:38 PM

Thanks, Katie. But, so far no free trips have come my way via this bosrd!

chorusboy Jan 2nd, 2003 04:42 PM

I performed with Miss Arthur in Mame (in more ways than one). Trust me, she is not a man!!!

Light Jan 3rd, 2003 05:17 AM

Then why was a chorusboy "with" her?
