Another vote for Albuquerque. I've seen a lot of airports and Albuquerque is the cleanest and has the most 'un-airport' feel to it.

Sacramento "International" Airport is still pretty easy to navigate. I'm sure they will screw that up shortly!

We loved flying into Molokai.
The control tower was an old life guard stand with the air traf. controller waving 2 faded yellow legal paper pads at the pilot. (just kiddin'-but it is that small and very quaint-much like Molokai!)
Kal

Ok.....I thought of one I DO actually like. The airport on the island of Saba. It's slightly larger than my bathroom, no check in lines, and very breezy. Simplicty at it's best.

Any Hawaii airport. It feels so great to walk off the plane and feel that warm humid air = )

My favorite in the US is probably Orlando, becuase of all the flowers and palm trees. Denver International is also nice...big and airy.

My favorite in the world, though, is Incheon Airport in South Korea. After a 15-hour flight with no sleep, I thought I was hallucinating. I felt like I was 50 years in the future. It's ultra-modern and Jetsons-like.

LaGuardia is the absolute worst. It's ragged-looking and there are always delays. JFK is no prize either, as its terminals (9 or 10 of them) are spaced very far apart. Though, they're working on improving it by adding a monorail. Can't wait!!

Austin's Bergstrom airport is fabulous. Local restaurants run the food court stalls and local music is available in the gift shops. Not as convenient to downtown as the old one, but amenities make it worth the trip.

As another Austinite, I like our little airport too. All the food is by local vendors, as well as the music that's either played by live bands in the terminal or piped in. I have a customer who lives out of town who usually makes sure he has a layover long enough to eat at his favorite BBQ restaurant that is in the airport.

My favorite airport is the Orlando International Airport (MCO)!! It is so beautiful, surrounded by great landscaping, has a great above ground transportation tram system that feels like Disney already! The shops are nice--good food--smiling people and easy to get around.
O'Hare is my favorite because the public areas are very clean. The carpet is clean enough to sit on. But the restrooms need some help. The last time I was there there was something on the wall in the restroom that looked like vomit. Gross. The laser lighted area everyone is talking about is in Terminal 1 only, which is only for United.

Tampa and Orlando just do it right everytime, period. Best design and efficiency. For foreign ones, Anegada. The size of an outhouse. The pilot had to get out and shoo a goat off the runway, LOL!

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport has a line of comfortable rocking chairs in a sunny window alongside the food court. It's a relaxing place to sit and people watch before a flight.

DFW for easy use.

Easy access to gates--no long halls to walk down to get to your gate. The concourse parellels the street so you park and walk in the outside door closest to your gate.

Baggage carousels are close to each every gate and 10 steps from outside door.

Two levels with departure on bottom level checking bags at the curb and arrivals on upper level with pick up at curb.

Statia May 21st, 2002 08:20 AM

Connie:

I can appreciate your comments on DFW if you actually depart from there...it probably is rather conveniently laid out for that. However, as far as a connecting airport, it's really the pits. See comments on the other thread regarding least favorite airports.

Nice to have another perspective, though.

Pittsburgh is definitely a great airport to hang out at....also like Tampa!

CF May 21st, 2002 10:50 AM

There again regarding Pittsburgh, it may be a nice place to make a connection but being our "home" airport it is too spread out, too far to walk, too far to baggage claim, too too. You walk a mile, take two sets of escalators and a tram to get to the baggage area then you walk a bunch more. As I noted on the disliked airport thread, they were really tight with their people movers.

Two come to mind:

1- The main airport on Maui, Kahalui

2- The new Palm Springs, CA airport

Theme you ask? Both are small, tropical in nature, and take advantage of the native climate by having the structural design incorporate outdoor/open areas that allow breezes to flow through the structures.

Nothing like sitting in an airport, sipping on a cocktail, with a warm breeze gently blowing through your hair!

Minneapois/St. Paul (MSP) has a shuttle to the Mall of America which is great if you know there's a big delay, Washington National (DCA) has decent shopping and good sushi, Denver (DEN) is beautiful from the outside and filled with resturants and shops. Las Vegas (LAS) is also fun. There are great fish tacos in the San Diego (SAN)airport. By the way, John Wayne (SNA) airport is in Orange County, CA.

I like Norfolk (ORF) and NewportNews/Williamsburg (PHF)

Norfolk, once outside the terminal, really doesn't seem to be a very commercial area at all, in fact, nearby are the botanical gardens. Seems comfortable setting within. Lots of military people thru here every day, but still seldom gets much mention anywhere.

Newport News: sparkling clean, almost sterile looking building, only 1 Burger King for food, and not many airlines serving it, nor flights either - I can't think of why they wasted so much money building a new terminal when the old one was nice, and more than adequate ("free" money is probably the reason), but in all fairness to this airport: No passenger facility charges and the wheeled luggage carts are free!

Don't you hate those damn messages that repeat over and over about security? Don't you hate those ...
tj May 22nd, 2002 12:56 PM
The ones where I can drive home from are the best!

White Plains NY is a nice small airport convenient for many suburbanites but the flights are usually xpensive.

Would you believe it if I said Newark?

Recently renovated, I guess, its very nice, with a monorail that takes you from one terminal to another and to parking lots. Walk to the terminals is not far and its clean and airy.

I also liked, get ready, San Jose.

If you go to Silicon Valley, its a lot less hassle than SFO and very clean.
