Slept right through this morning's shaker here in the South Bay; however, it would have been impossible to sleep through the quake of 1989 if it had occurred during the night. I remember huge flocks of birds taking off en mass from the trees, the refrigerator "walking" out from the wall about 18 inches, and the appearance of our floor-to-ceiling window glass undulating like liquid. Young son and I headed to an inside doorway and held on for dear life.

BayouGal, I agree with you. I don't know if there are more quakes and eruptions, but I certainly don't remember being so aware of them and it seems as though there are more. Our newspaper in San Diego has a weekly record of all these things worldwide and it's enough to make you sit up and pay attention.

After the Loma Prieta quake, we didn't have power or water for several days, so we didn't have any visual images of the damage around the Bay Area - just news reports over the radio. When we finally did see TV reports and we saw footage of the bay bridge, we all looked at each other and said "that's IT?" From the radio reports, we thought an entire section had fallen into the bay. It was very anticlimactic to see just one section of the road bed leaning on the lower section. LOL.

I don't know about anticlimatic, seeing as how I have to drive across that bay bridge from time to time, the thought of falling onto the lower level and perishing, or being squished by the upper level is totally scarey to me.

I didn't mean that the damage wasn't significant, it just wasn't nearly as catastrophic as the radio reports made it sound.
