Alcatraz and a broken foot
I will be recouperating from a broken foot when we visit SF and was wondering if there is alot of walking and if it is hilly or flat. Thanks for any help.
|
Are you asking specifically about Alcatraz being hilly or flat? Definitely walking. Why not have a wheelchair for the tour? I'm in fine shape and sometimes wish I had one.
SF, itself is definitely hilly. |
Check out "under considerations" and you will find some info that might help you decide what to do.

I assume you're asking specifically about Alcatraz...
It is hilly, and seeing it requires a good bit of walking, including up and down stairs. I don't know if wheelchairs are available for the tour...perhaps someone else can give specifics about that. But I would not attempt to walk around Alcatraz on a broken foot. Good luck... |
actually that would be "additional considerations"

We went on the Alcatraz tour recently. I'm in good shape and was huffing and puffing walking up the hills. I did see one woman pushing her husband in a wheelchair and it was a struggle for her. I wouldn't go with a broken foot either.

I could have sworn on my last trip there that I saw a small tram that was ferrying people up the main Alcatraz hill. I assumed it was provided for people with mobility problems.
There is walking involved on the island - but it's a self-guided tour so you should be able to move about at your own pace. I imagine you'd do well on crutches assuming it's not the rainy season. |
Yes, there was a cart to take people up the hill.
|
Yup yup, as people mentioned there is a cart that takes people up to the top that have limited mobility.
|
Is it like a golf cart? Thanks for all the help everyone.
|
No, I think it was a bigger 'cart' that would carry several people. You have to wait for them to take you - the website says the shuttle runs once an hour.
