airport for trip to Wyoming
Planning a trip next June from Raleigh to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. What airport would be best to fly into and to rent a car?
|
A friend of mine is going there next week and she will fly into Jackson Hole, WY.

We just booked flights to Yellowstone for August. Jackson Hole (code is jac) is closest. Another option is Idaho Falls - about 2 hours away and depending on origination point and airline might be cheaper.
Southwest flies into Salt Lake City and we found that air fare to be $200 cheaper than either of above, but drive is about 6 hours. To research flights, I used one of the sites (like itasoftware, Expedia, etc.) that lets you check off alternate airports and then you can compare flights. Be prepared for likely cost higher than you expect - we could have flown Boston-California for half what it is costing us to fly to Wyoming. |
JAC is the closest to the Tetons and WYS (West Yellowstone) is at the northwest corner of Yellowstone. WYS has fewer flights. I rented a car at JAC and dropped off at WYS without a drop fee so perhaps it could save some driving time.

Bozeman is about 90 minutes from West Yellowstone, I agree with doing multi city, fly into one airport and out the other. Such as into Bozeman, out of Jackson or Billings via Cody. Plan a driving loop based on your air plans
