3 oz liquids restriction for carry-ons still in effect?

I thought I read that in 2009 airlines were going to roll back the restrictions of 3 oz liquids/gels in 1 quart size bag, but on the TSA's website it looks like it's still in effect. Is security still strict about this? We're flying Delta from Cincinnati to San Francisco and are only taking carry-ons.

nanabee Sep 3rd, 2009 08:00 PM

As far as I know, yes.

jent103 Sep 3rd, 2009 08:10 PM

Whether security is "strict" depends on what agent you get, but the 3-1-1 rule is still in effect. TSA.gov is generally up to date with regulations.

We planned to check luggage but due to a huge accident on the freeway, were late and had to carry on our bags. Oops - had to ditch a 5 oz. jar of mustard, a can of shaving cream and an 8" wrench. Yup, still in effect!

janisj Sep 3rd, 2009 08:46 PM

It isn't the airlines place to 'roll back' or not. It is up to TSA.

3-1-1 is definitely still in effect. However - you sometimes don't have to pull the qt-sized baggie out for individual screening. At some airports you are allowed to leave the baggie in your carry-on - just make sure it is easily accessible if the agents want to see it.

I figured the TSA does have up-to-date info, but I was hoping somehow you guys would say, "yeah, I just flew yesterday and there aren't any liquid restrictions!" ha.

Thanks for the info!

There is a possibility that the restrictions will be lifted soon.

Kip Hawley, the Transportation Security Administration head, wrote in his blog Friday that by next fall, size restrictions on liquids and gels would be removed. On Tuesday, Jens Mester, a EU Commission spokesman, said he is confident carry-on liquid restrictions will be lifted as early as 2010 in the EU.

There are a number of technologies in play for a carry-on liquids scanning program, which could enable TSA to eliminate the liquid restrictions now in place.

I planned to carry-on my bag...but didn't have time to downsize my toiletries. Checked the bag. Yep. Still in effect.

Brian_in_Charlotte Sep 4th, 2009 05:45 AM

Hadn't seen it enforced in a while until a flight out of CLT yesterday where one agent was enforcing it very strictly. The agent in the other line didn't seem as concerned about it.

abram Sep 7th, 2009 03:01 PM

We flew home this afternoon, and my husband forgot to take his quart bag out of his carry-on (which he does more often than not). The TSA in the Atlanta airport didn't notice--but that's not something I would recommend.

KathyM Sep 7th, 2009 04:03 PM

Beyond the terrible loss of life, the worst thing the terrorists on 9/11 did to us was to to make us experience such inconvenience and make us pay for all of the agents to "keep us safe"...

SamH Sep 7th, 2009 04:21 PM

Yep, still in effect. But it won't be the airlines that will hopefully roll it back. It will be TSA. Their rules.

Mustard? Wrench? what are you playing...Clue?
C'mon

sf7307 Sep 7th, 2009 04:53 PM

Mustard - had to buy something local at a general store in some small town (Grafton, actually) in Vermont.

Wrench - helps a lot when you're doing construction.

No kidding.

last week i too was disappointed that all those rumours i had read about the 3 oz rule being lifted are not true.
they are definitely being enforced.

4sharie Sep 7th, 2009 06:02 PM

Love the Clue connection with mustard and wrench! Had a good chuckle!

Packed up my little quart bags tonight... our 2 bags are stuffed full!

Isn't it true that you can have medicines and prescriptions in a separate bag that you show to security? Seems like I did that a couple years ago with liquid tylenol for my dd.

jent103 Sep 7th, 2009 06:42 PM

Again, the TSA web site covers all the regulations:

http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Medications can be separate.

Thanks for the direct link, jent103! Just read through lots of good info.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Just today, three British terrorists have been convicted of plotting to blow up planes to Canada and the USA with liquid explosives. The judge said, apparently, had the plot not been foiled, the loss of life would have been worse than 9/11.

Since you asked for a 'yeah, I flew yesterday" account, Yeah we flew 3 weeks ago and the TSA agent took our 8 year old grandson's gel toothpaste. When he found out the bag was the little boy's, not the gray haired grandfather that was pulling it off the table, the agent turned all "sweet", talked to DGS and said he'd just have to take it.

cd Sep 8th, 2009 06:08 AM

On our last flight, we had one checked bag and one carry-on. I know better but had a brain fart, I put in the carry-on, two cans of $17.00 each, hair spray! I asked them to please give them to someone to take home and use cause they were expensive. They said they were not permitted to do that, that they would have to be trashed.

TC Sep 8th, 2009 06:19 AM

Flew twice this weekend (Labor Day), rules still in effect, but sporadically administered -- as always. TSA agent yawning and looking over her shoulder as our bags passed through her xray machine. I've always thought that to be the most tedious job in the universe and have to wonder at the true effectiveness of it all. Have you ever had a peek at your bag on the xray screen? How difficult could it be to conceal bits and pieces of something within all the hodge-podge and have it go un-noticed? I don't know how they make heads or tails of any of it -- even with loads of training.

AAFrequentFlyer Sep 8th, 2009 06:24 AM

They said they were not permitted to do that, that they would have to be trashed.,

they do offer "shipping" the items, although expensive, it's an option. The TSA flunky you had to deal with obviously was short of few brain cells.

Anonymous Sep 8th, 2009 08:24 AM

USPS regulations limit your options for shipping hair spray and other aerosols (can't use First Class or Priority Mail) so perhaps the agent was factoring-in that non-terrorist threat to air safety.

Dayenu Sep 8th, 2009 08:30 AM

Check TSA website regularly, there was something on TV this morning about revision of the rules in the UK - and the US may follow.

AAFrequentFlyer Sep 8th, 2009 08:37 AM

USPS regulations limit your options for shipping hair spray and other aerosols (can't use First Class or Priority Mail) so perhaps the agent was factoring-in that non-terrorist threat to air safety.

huh?

last time I checked I could have any size liquid container as long as it was in a checked in bag. Why would USPS have issues with a hair spray company shipping a huge carton of 1000 oz, size cans to their customer?

They want you to declare the content, so it's placed properly in the plane cargo hold, but I doubt very much they have an issue with what's being shipped.

4sharie Sep 21st, 2009 01:42 PM

Me again, just following up! Our flights went off without a hitch, and things do seem to be a bit more relaxed with the liquids.

I had our quart bags (one for each of us, and an extra with contact solution and liquid pres meds) but totally forgot to remove them and put them in the bins through security. They went through just fine. this was in Cincinnati.

On the return flight from San Francisco, I remembered about the liquids, but this time just watched to see if I should remove them from the carry-ons. When it was our time to go through security an agent asked if we had any "beverages" and she named everything from water to tequilla, but no mention of removing our quart bags.

Was nice to have things a little easier than the last time we flew.

(and my husband finally remembered to remove his belt so he didn't get beeped at and then searched!)
