There is a great grocery store in that area, coincidentally enough called Fairway! It's located on 12th AV and 132nd St. It's one of the best store in the city for both value and quality.

travelbuff Jun 22nd, 2007 12:23 PM

If your daughter does not know the area, I would be happy to give her a tour of the area. Or be a resource for her while she is here.

Fairway Jun 22nd, 2007 12:30 PM

well, MFNYC perhaps the grocery store name will mean something good in all of this? :-)

She only saw photos and spoke with the person since she does not live in the area. I have to have faith at this point...

ggreen, I will pass along the roommate suggestion as well.

travelbuff, you must be posting at this exact time I am because I just saw your message. I would love to pass along your offer to be a resource for her.

Thanks for your kindness.

Be happy to help in any way I can. The city can be a bit overwhelming even if she has been here before this area of town will be totally new to her.

Fairway Jun 23rd, 2007 09:22 AM

travelbuff, is there a university or college of some sort near that area?

paula1470 Jun 23rd, 2007 09:55 AM

I think travelbuff mentioned that City College of New York is in the area you are discussing.

travelbuff Jun 23rd, 2007 12:28 PM

Yes City College is one long block east of where she is going to be. The campus in on Amsterdam and goes for about 8 blocks or so. That's one of the reasons the area is up and coming. My immediate neighborhood has several professors that teach at City College.

Fairway Jun 24th, 2007 11:57 AM

Yes, I should have looked at your very first response to me travelbuff, you did mention City College.
Well, I hope all is well. Evidentally the person subletting it likes the area. We'll see.

travelbuff Jun 25th, 2007 12:12 AM

She's subletting from a subletter? I hope she has a copy of a lease signed before she gets here, if all else fails, she can sleep on my couch. lol.

ggreen Jun 25th, 2007 06:22 AM

Fairway, it's a little confusing what you wrote: is she subletting from the renter, or from someone who themselves is subletting?

Also, is it what they call a "legal sublet" - does the landlord know she'll be there? It's not the end of the world if it's not; she just has to play by different rules.

nytraveler Jun 25th, 2007 09:39 AM

Will she have the apartment to herself - or is she going to share with the current subletter.

If she's there alone and has no lease she has no legal right to be there. She might need to disguise her status from resident super - and needs to understand what to do if there is some sort of problem - plumbing etc. If she has no legal status and a problem arises, she could find herself removed - or, alternatively, responsible for paying bills for repairs.

This all depends on the type of building - rental versus co-op - and the legal status of the current resident (a subletter can never legally sublet). So, she may have to pretend to be a relative, or try to avoid havng anyone know she's there.

ggreen Jun 25th, 2007 10:39 AM

nytraveler again with the great explanation! That is exactly what I meant by "play by different rules". Thanks for taking the time to spell it out.

Fairway Jun 25th, 2007 10:47 AM

No, there's no subletting from a subletter and not staying alone either. There's a contract so it sounds like its all been cleared.

travelbuff Jun 26th, 2007 04:59 PM

That's great that things seem to be all arranged, and if she has any problems, again I'm just a few blocks or a phone call for some assistance.
