TAW, this is something I have thought for a long time would be great fun. Check it out. You speak only English for a week to Spanish or German students, often adults. Your stay and food is paid for. You have to provide transportation to Spain or Germany. The idea is for this students to have a week of immersion in English. The hotels and towns they stay in look beautiful!

I did a language school in Italy several years ago. There were a number of people there who had non-traveling spouses or who were recently widowed. Most language schools also offer activities or additional classes in cooking or art. Of course, in a week or two you will not become proficient, but you will pick up some words. There is usually time for independent exploring and, if you pick something with good train connections, you can go further afield. People formed small groups for socializing; there were two women who had met at a language course several years ago who continued to meet at a different school each year even though they lived far apart in the US.

As mentioned above, river cruising might also be a good option if you can talk your husband into it.

Many local universities also do language courses (anyone can sign up) in foreign cities. I didn't see this mentioned and if it was I apologize for the repeat, but, Roads Scholars is an excellent program that has been around for decades.

Forgive any presumption, but would your DH still enjoy planning a trip with you? It could make your reporting back more meaningful. Possibly you could Skype at the end of the day with him?

After my DH died in 2010, I took my first solo to Austin TX, where we'd planned to go for our next Thanksgiving getaway and it was fine. I missed "bouncing things off" with him but enjoyed taking longer looks at those I enjoyed but he might not have.
