Just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth...
I 'travel solo' on cruises. I think that this is a great first trip for someone who wants to kind of try a solo trip out. Lots of activities to do or not do. On many ships you can sit with others for meals. Cruising is a great way to spend time with others and have time alone.
Sometimes I've added a few days solo on my tours or trips visiting family and/or friends. Maybe its being single but I find that, when visiting family/friends, I need the down time to just chill out by being on my own.
I still consider myself someone who is working on her solo travel skills.

I have taken 4 solo trips to Europe and they were planned from Fodor's travel forums. My first trip was to Paris to attend the French Open tennis and I took many day tours and an overnight 3 day tour to Avignon in the S of France. I loved it! My next trip was to Paris and back to the S of France for 3 weeks because I liked it so much. I made Avignon my home base and took many day tours, on one tour met a woman from my home town and we rented a car and visited many small towns. My last trip was for 6 weeks to Prague, Krakow, Warsaw, Lithuania and Riga. I traveled by train and stayed in the center of the Old Towns and had a wonderful time. I met many locals including college students who took me to a jazz fest. I also travel with my husband when he can make it. I love traveling solo because I can do what I want, and go to whatever town that I want and if I want to stay in the room one day and read.
Sometimes it is a little scary as when I went alone to Budapest, but I find everyone very helpful and kind. I feel safe most of the time. I try to fit in with the locals and have my main meal in the afternoon. The first trip is always the hardest. Try a short trip first.

Hi all! It's been years since I've posted on this site. I'm glad this thread is here! I've had my travel hijacked by my friend who's a school teacher and the itinerary just absolutely blown all over the place. I like to take time in cities and mingle amongst the locals. She likes to run from Starbucks to Starbucks and post card stand to post card stand. Well, kids, I'm getting my groove back! I'm going solo again! Any like minded travelers let me know what's up! I'm interested in March - June departure dates to Down Under (Sydney, Auckland) or somewhere else in Europe. Where's the best place for a single gal?

Well, I find it's easiest and most pleasant to travel in cities, as a solo female. But "best place" is a pretty tall order!!!

Paris, Venice, and Amsterdam are all cities I have had a wonderful time and no hassles alone.

Suze, me too! I'm looking for new places now...still, would like to really explore Paris. Viva Travel! :)

That's me booked for a trip to Stockholm on 19th March. Coming home on 23rd. I'm going on my own but if there's anybody else jetting off at that time, just let me know and we could meet up for a coffee! :-)
