Hi Amy. I realize your trip report on South Africa is quite old but as I lived there for three years I wanted to just correct your use of the word Bantu as you would insult any South Africa using that word. Bantu is the word the white ruling class used for any black south African of any of the 10 or so ethnicities. There is no bantu language or tribe. Zulus are the largest, followed by Xhosa, Sotho, pedi, Venda, etc.
I loved the country but left because of fears for personal safety and a slow and unreasonable civil legal system. Kim |
Kimwhits, I really appreciate your information. The term "Bantu" was definitely used by white and black South African guides alike; perhaps it's due to the recognition that most non-South Africans have of the term in reference to languages such as Swahili and the early so-called "Bantu migration"?
My apologies to any whom I've unwittingly offended; I wonder if it's become a "reclaimed" word in some areas? It is indeed a beautiful country and must have been hard to leave, but I can understand the personal safety concerns. |
Forgot to post the links to last year's fall trip:

My email is in my profile. Even though email is old-fashioned by this point, I still do use it. :)
