Thank you both - maitaitom - do go to Arches, beautiful place. But not a place I'd be caught dead in during the summer.

marg May 30th, 2019 02:20 PM

Love your trip report. Brought back some great memories of travels in North America.

Melnq8 May 30th, 2019 02:42 PM

Thank you marg! Nice to see you way over here in Utah:)

marg Jun 1st, 2019 03:26 PM

Wish we were in Utah, Mel. Unfortunately health issues have put a stop to our prancing around the world. Great while it lasted.

sundowner Jun 1st, 2019 04:19 PM

Love it! The trip, the trip report and the images!

ElendilPickle Jun 1st, 2019 05:45 PM

Agreed. We were there in October 2017 and Moab was a zoo. There were big lines to get into Arches on the day we went to Islands in the Sky, but if you hike a little you leave a chunk of the crowds behind.

I'm very sorry to hear that marg. I wish you the best.

FWIW I'd take Australia over Utah in a NY minute:)

Thank you sundowner.

Lee Ann - yeah, from what I understand October is THE time to go. We're considering a return visit in the dead of winter.

Patty Jun 2nd, 2019 07:07 PM

Glad you enjoyed the drive on 128. We were in Moab in early December last year (and also stayed at the Hyatt Place) and didn't have any issues with crowds.

Melnq8 Jun 3rd, 2019 04:17 AM

How was the weather then Patty?

Patty Jun 3rd, 2019 04:28 PM

Sorry, it was early November! We were supposed to go in early December but had to reverse the order of our trip at the last minute. It was dry, sunny and 50's/60's during the day, perfect hiking weather. We got a "you must be from Colorado" when we chose to sit outside to eat (we're from CA but the damp, foggy part).

Melnq8 Jun 4th, 2019 04:16 AM

"you must be from Colorado"

Ha! Sounds perfect for us Coloradans!

Don't want to deter you as we still had a great time, but following are pictures from my trip December 7th & 8th 2013. Arches was actually closed on the 8th so went up to Dead Horse Point:

Next two trips we went in early May - fantastic but much busier. I believe our December weather was unusual.

Melnq8 Jun 4th, 2019 12:44 PM

Thanks for that Dave, might have to reconsider - we have plenty of that white stuff right here at home.

wtm003 Jun 4th, 2019 01:40 PM

I love your report and pics! We camped in Arches May 2018. It was absolutely beautiful except we were chewed up by No-See-Ums. We've also been a couple of times in late October, stayed in Moab and had perfect weather.

Melnq8 Jun 4th, 2019 01:43 PM

Thanks wtm003! October looks spectacular - and spectacularly busy!

MeInq8 -
Enjoyed the TR! You helped me so much on our New Zealand trip last year. We are in Taos, finishing up a month long Southwest trip. Left May 12th, hit Sedona, Flagstaff, Page, Monument Valley, Mesa Verde ( hit Hovenweep on the way), Durango, Ouray, Pagosa Springs, Taos and we are stopping in Pinetop, AZ and Lake Havasu before home to LA. We had never been to any of the places before, what beautiful country. Glad you guys had a good time.

Melnq8 Jun 7th, 2019 11:55 AM

Glad to hear I was helpful Tdiddy. Just read your SW trip report, sounds like you had a lovely time.

Tdiddy12 Jun 7th, 2019 10:26 PM

How do you had pics to a TR? They are such a nice touch.

Melnq8 Jun 8th, 2019 05:24 AM

Tdiddy - for the best explanation, take a look at the FAQ section at the top of this page.

The fast and dirty explanation - when typing in the reply box, you'll see a photo icon in the top banner, you just click on that icon and follow the prompts from there.

I'm looking at the icon right now as I type this, but I don't know how to post a screen capture of it.

Tdiddy12 Jun 12th, 2019 07:42 AM

Found it!
Thanks.
