Discussion in my trip report (pre-pandemic).

Las Ranas is the traditional "must do". Avoid El Mural de Los Poblanos for a meal. You can probably go inside for a look at the dining room murals. Maybe just a drink or coffee. Some Fodorite had raved about it and it was AWFUL.

Mlgb- Thanks! Just read your TR. We ate last night at El Mural de los Poblanos and we had very different experience in 2024.
We had one order of mole poblano with a chicken leg (choice was leg or breast) and it was delicious, moist and tasty. However I had a shrimp dish and I didn’t care for my dish. Fabulous dessert of banana cake with vanilla ice cream. Murals did nothing for me. Different strokes for different folks or times have changed their prep.

While Las Ranas gets mentioned for the go to place there are several others highly rated. Will probably try several during our 5 nights here,

Maybe a different cook at dinner? Good that at least one of two mains was satisfactory. Nothing in my tasting menu was better than "OK". The moles are good but the enchilada was a laugh. I guess if you can specify a whole piece of chicken you'd have better luck getting something identifiable as chicken.

chicken is so easy to dry out. Server asked if he wanted a thigh or breast. Obviously a thigh would be less dry than a breast. We didnt do any sort of tasting menu,

Always made Mesón de Sacristán a stop. But haven't been there for a few years. Things change. Black tie waiters, but casual dining.

Did you make it to La Pasita for one of the famous "shots"?

we tried to go to La Pasita but it was jammed on a perfect Sunday. We did go to Las Ranas for lunch and it was delicious.
dinner last night at Augurio and it was great! Highly recommend it.
Sadly we leave tomorrow. Puebla is a much overlooked town.
