Puebla, Cholula or Tlaxcala?

My wife and I have 2 days after arriving in Mexico city to spend before we have to be in Oaxaca city. We love history, ruins, colonial cities etc. Where would you stay for the 2 nights and what hotel would you recomend there? Do have car.

Thanks in advance.

We were in and out of Puebla a couple times this winter on a two month trip. We loved Puebla. You can do a day (or a half day) trip to sites in Cholula.

Recommend the Hotel Colonial - beautiful old place - great location - reasonably priced - popular!

Have a GREAT inexpensive very casual meal at Las Ranas. And an elegant one at Meson Sacristia (both an easy walk from Hotel Colonial).

Thanks Glover.

We were starting to lean this way.

In two days in Puebla, you can also get to Cholula to see the pyramid and church on top of it (and maybe the volcanoe if it is a very clear day) for an afternoon. Cholula is like a suburb of Puebla, 30 min. away. Tues and Sat are market days in Cholula and that is fun.

You can see my Tlaxcala trip report from February, 2012 towards the bottom of this thread below. I LOVED Tlaxcala.

If you haven't seen much of Mexico City, you might consider staying there until you leave for Oaxaca. It has everything you are looking for.
