New Book on Costa Rica

The new book on Costa Rica that I have been waiting for and was suppose to be available in October 2005 is here and I just picked it up.

It is in the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides series.

At the bottom of the cover the line states:
"The Guide That Shows You What Others Only Tell You."

On the cover there is a lovely waterfall from the Corcorvado National Park in Osa, and also a picture of a Scarlet Macaw.

I like the format of these DK books with their multiple colored pictures on each page.

The first 47 pages is divided into five chapters titled:
1. Dicovering Costa Rica

2.Putting Costa Rica on the Map.

3. A Portrait of Costa Rica

4.Costa Rica Through the Year.

5. The Histroy of Costa Rica.

The next 150 pages is:
"Costa Rica By Area".

Finally there is "Travelers Needs." dealing with , where to stay ( By region),where to eat , where to shop, what to buy etc.
then
"Practical Information "and Travel Information."

It is a very colorful book and it is nice just to look at the pictures, as I am doing right now.

The book is just titled "Costa Rica"
The ISBN is 0-7566-1352-3
There is another ISBN and it is :
978-0-7566-352-5

You all know what ISBN stands for I am sure !!!

I browsed with great interest into the new edition of the 2006 Fodors book on Costa Rica
I read the quotes from people I have met on this Fodors Forum on Costa Rica like:
dfarmer
tully
greenfield
Molly2
Ally
and many other.
And also that other person,oh what is her name again, ...oh yes shillmac!!! that's it.

I just got back from almost three weeks in Egypt and I found the DK book on Egypt invaluable.

I read the book on Egypt from cover to cover twice, which is what I am going to do with this(DK series) Costa Rica book.

So you all have another colorful Costa Rica book to add to your library.

Happy reading and browsing.

Percy

tully Nov 10th, 2005 03:58 PM

Thanks for mentioning Percy! I love those DK books, all those beautiful pics. Yet another one to add to my collection.

shillmac Nov 10th, 2005 04:11 PM

Thanks Percy--it does sound very interesting. I may have to invest in 2 new guidebooks. :)

Have a good weekend in the north country!

dfarmer Nov 10th, 2005 04:57 PM

Thanks Percy, Now I guess I have to go back to B&N!!! Pictures you say! How I love pictures of CR.

Egypt, oh I bet that was interesting. Now I am sitting here looking at my world globe that always sits on my desk! Did you post a report yet, with pictures!?!? Please do let us Costa Rica addicts know.

faithie Nov 10th, 2005 05:03 PM

Ahhh jeepers !! Just bought the Fodors with all my fave fodorites ! Now I'll have to invest in another ..... shucks ! faith

Percy Nov 10th, 2005 05:31 PM

Hi dfarmer:

Yes I did post a report .

If you want to browse through the report ...just go to the "change forum " on the top left hand side...and then click on Africa/Mid East.

Then scroll down to about item 195 ,which is titled "Just back from Egypt" and there it is.

Yes it was very interesting.
I climbed the Pyramid 1/3 of the way up, rode a camel, saw the Sphinx, cruised the Nile for a week....took a side trip to Alexandria on the Mediterranean Sea and also visited King Tuts Tomb and all his gold...amazing!!!!

Yes,faithie, you are going to have to get this book.

Any Costa Rica addict will enjoy it, this means you faithie!!!

The pictures are all lovely, take my word for it !!!

Percy

missypie Nov 11th, 2005 05:32 AM

Thanks for letting me know. I love the DK eyewitness travel guides.

Percy Nov 11th, 2005 01:11 PM

Boy Rubensanchez, you better not let rbrazill read your message... because I would agree with him that you are
attempting to solicit for the Fiesta Premier Resort.

I am sure they are very capable of doing their own advertising.

This thread was about the new book on Costa Rica.!!!!

If you got back from Costa Rica last May ,why are you just telling us about how great the Fiesta Premier is now.?

See rbrazill, tully and dfarmer aren't you proud of me now .!!

Percy

rbrazill Nov 11th, 2005 03:17 PM

Go get 'em Percy. My question is: will Ruben, or his partner Alberto, get pregnant there?

faithie Nov 11th, 2005 03:21 PM

You guys ! This is hilarious , will " we " be banned !!? The Latin American forum is such a civilized place , it's just gone crazy , and no Shillmac in sight to keep this Scot. in line . lol

dfarmer Nov 11th, 2005 03:21 PM

HEE HEE - I am busting at the seams! That was too funny! As the World Turns!

suze Nov 11th, 2005 03:43 PM

Ahhh... I wondered why most Costa Rica posts were showing on Latin America today... now I know why. Things are stranger and stranger here at Fodor's this week. Hasta, suze

faithie Nov 11th, 2005 03:49 PM

Uh Oh !! Now I am really confused ... Costa Rica has always been under the Latin America forum , non ? As is Mexico , Belize , Panama , etc.

suze Nov 11th, 2005 04:16 PM

Ya ya, sorry, I meant only that so many of the topics were 'CR' on the top 50, more than usual, and not a Puerto Vallarta in sight.

faithie Nov 11th, 2005 04:37 PM

Tee Hee ! I get it now , and your right !! There were at least 23 posts at last count , yup .... I COUNTED , it was stronger than me . Fodorville is a little crazy lately !

Percy Nov 11th, 2005 06:21 PM

rbrazill ,you are too funny, but I will try to get these guys.!!!

I do not know where these loonies came from but I amsure even Fiesta Premier might not know what they are up to.!!??

shillmac ,where are you when we need you?
You better not be in Texas.

Goodnight all

Percy

CaliNurse Nov 12th, 2005 09:57 AM

Suze, not to worry; I just posted a question on a different thread about PV!
Faithie--"Non"??? Mais oui, the Montreal influence is showing.
Percy should have been at my job yesterday. Got into passionate but friendly discussion with a friend about where to go on a future trip: she wants Egypt, I want Costa Rica!

jmvp Nov 12th, 2005 11:55 AM

CalNurse:

Do you need any help in deciding !!(LOL
Percy

jmvp Nov 12th, 2005 12:11 PM

oh my goodness ,Percy I was going to ask you about your Egypt trip ,as I have friends that are plannig to go before June and I inadvertently signd your name to my posting to CaliNurse.

Sorry,if I caused you any distress

jmvp

My apologies

Percy Nov 12th, 2005 01:47 PM

No problem jmvp

Atleast you were not advertising.

I have done that twice over the past few years.
Once going to the Galapagos ,I was asking a question from a poster and signed Martin...as Martin was the next person I was send an e-mail to!!!
But Martin was my Travel Agent in Quito.!!! si he got a big kick out of it.!!

ALso thanks for your e-mail. My computer was down this afternoon just as I answered your question re Egypt. The Cable company was doing repairs.

Thanks for doing the requested a post for me on the Egypt board.

My internet is working now.

Tell your friends to write to me( e-mail) about question they have in relation to their planning a trip to Egypt.

I would be happy to help.
They better do their reading and homework well !!
Percy

Percy Nov 12th, 2005 01:58 PM

I am back in business..computer was down.

jmvp ,between your friends that want to go to Egypt and CaliNurse's friends...maybe they should get together !!!

CaliNurse ,I am on page 84 of the Costa Rica book I got on Thursday afternoon.
The pictures are great.
It is so pleasing to read about country that you love and have been to 3 times.

You also have to get this book.

Percy

CaliNurse Nov 13th, 2005 09:10 PM

OK Percy, I am going to get both the Fodors book wiht all the familiar screen names in it, and the book you recommended. You mean you are in the DK book??!!! You may have seen the post where I listed page numbers for some of the Fodorite references in the Fodors CR guide.
Jmvp, thanks for offer of help, but my heart belongs to Costa Rica!! I'll have to twist my travel companion friend's arm. I am soooo bummed out about postponing trip (health stuff, darn it!) trip to CR that i'd hoped to be doing a month from now. My kids went last December and loved it, want to return some day, and loved December weather there. I hope to follow in their footsteps before too long.
Faithie, what is it about you?? There's much sweetness and laughter in your posts--sometimes between the lines. Mais oui!!

gannetmusic Nov 14th, 2005 03:00 AM

I checked out the DK Costa Rica book at our local Chapters [bookstore]yesterday and was not greatly impressed. It does have some different photos but other than that nothing particularly new or insightful.

There certainly are a great many Coats Rica guidebooks available now! I have found the most recent version of the 'New Key to Costa Rica' to be quite useful and accurate.

Does anyone have other guidebooks they find especially different or helpful?

Jerry

shillmac Nov 14th, 2005 02:21 PM

I leave for the weekend and you guys go mad! :)

Perhaps we shouldn't all get together sometime--that would be one rowdy bunch of Fodorites!

Heavens no, Percy, you know I don't "do Texas" on the weekends!

Percy Nov 14th, 2005 02:26 PM

I usually like guide books with a lot of pictures and to the point explantions about an area or about the pictures.

Since I usually know where I am staying in Costa Rica...I do not want to wade through and read about every little hotel and motel in a certain small town, and what their price is for a room and whether soap is included or not.!!!

But I also realize that those that drive from place to place to place, need to know more about what is available in the next town as they journey along.

That is why we purchase guide books to suit our own needs.

Because I feel I know Costa Rica quite well, no guide book is really going to teach me that much....however I never tire of seeing more pictures of Costa Rica.

I would like to say that was unimpressed with the 2006 Fodors book on Costa Rica, but I better not !!.......less I get deleted from this forum (LOL).

But I did enjoy all the comments made people I have met on this forum.!

CaliNurse:

No I am not in the DK book!!!~
But I sure enjoy all those pictures, many if which I can identify with!

Plus I find it easy browsing and not heavy reading.. But that's my preference !

Percy

faithie Nov 14th, 2005 02:27 PM

Shillmac !!! What fun you missed , it was hilarious , but alas , all that's left are the odd remnants .... Which unfortunately look very odd as they stand alone without the posts which started them ! I have learned MUCH about The Fiesta Premier Resort in the last few days .....

tully Nov 14th, 2005 04:09 PM

Percy I agree about the books, I have so many CR books (not to mention about a dozen different DK books on Eur. countries) and the photos really make or break it for me. I'm easily visually stimulated :)

shillmac Nov 14th, 2005 06:14 PM

Faithie, I did see some of those late last week and read the comments. They were ridiculous! I surmised that over the weekend, most of them were pulled off the board. Didn't do Fiesta Premier any favors, did they? And I think it really IS a nice place to stay for AI enthusiasts--Percy liked it!

Tully, speaking of visually stimulated--the kitty on the soccer field was hilarious! :)

Percy Nov 14th, 2005 07:25 PM

tully:

I'm like you I have quite a few of the DK books .
When I did England ,Scotland and Ireland and Wales last year..
those DK books with their colorful pictures were terrific.

For example,I knew what York was before I got there and what to see. Also in Cambridge and Oxford, I knew where to go right away and what I wanted to see.

I did a terrific walking tour on my own in Dublin Ireland and took the walking path tour right out of the DK book on Ireland.

There are many other example too numerous to mention.

When I went to Egypt last month,I made about 10 pages of notes out of the DK book on Egypt, and Xeroxed many pages.
But I read the book from cover to cover.

I knew this one on Costa Rica was in progress and that October 2005 was the month it was to be launched.

As soon as it arrived the bookstore called me.

I'm with you I like those books.

shillmac:

I just thought that maybe you went to Texas for some reason.

I think those Fiesta Premier posters perhaps did Fiesta a great injustice.

You stated on another posting that you know 2 Percy's .!!!

C'mon shillmac,you cannot be THAT lucky.(LOL)

faithie:

I am proud of the way you handled those attackers over the weekend.

And may I just add that the Fiesta Premier Resort is a lovely secluded place ,tucked away in an alcove, across the water from the Four Season and the Allegro Papagayo.

NO!!! this is not plug to visit the resort. It is my own comment based totally on my stay there.

hmmm... 2 Percys !!shillmac you are pulling my leg.
Percy

shillmac Nov 15th, 2005 05:48 PM

Actually, now that I think of it, there are 3! One is Costa Rican, the other a U.S. Representative. And, of course, the Canadian. :) Most are decent fellows! What did you think of the renewal of the Four Seasons thread? Sure do love a good controversy! :)

Percy Nov 15th, 2005 05:56 PM

shillmac:

Yes I read that Four Season's renewal thread.

I did not dare to add anything else !!

Don't know what the conflict is over a top quality hotel.

I think I will leave it at that !

Percy

shillmac Nov 16th, 2005 05:44 PM

Yeah, well, I opened my big mouth again. Greenfieldhunter sounds like a very reasonable fellow. He has been an excellent contributor on this board, so I couldn't stay quiet!

'night!

Percy Nov 17th, 2005 07:27 AM

shillmac:

Oh Oh,the Four Seasons article /thread has been removed.

!!!
Percy

greenfieldhunter Nov 17th, 2005 07:32 AM

Thanks for the kind word Shillmac-

Reasonable might not have been my wife's first descriptive word if prompted on my personality.

In fact- I have found this board really lacking without YOUR presence and voice of reason.

I think I read that you are a teacher and I can imagine you kindly reining in a rowdy classroom without raising your voice. You too Percy- you had been the person who originally laid the tired thread to rest and I thank you. Perhaps someday our paths will cross.

I should have let sleeping dogs lie with that old FS thread- I was not even a poster in the original and by responding I only added fuel to the fire. The funny thing is- I like staying in nice hotels too.

I guess NYJ responded and the thread was pulled- good- it was too divisive and might have been resurrected quarterly.

Pura Vida guys- enjoy the fall colors if they are still around in your neck of the woods.

Percy Nov 17th, 2005 07:48 AM

Hi greenfieldhunter:

Fall colors have all gone around here.

That white stuff (snow) came a little and then quickly went. So outside right now the grass is green.

Enjoyed your comments in the new Fodors Book.

The pleasure would be all mine if our paths ever cross.

Thank you for your valueable input on this Forum.

Have a nice day .

Percy

shillmac Nov 17th, 2005 05:41 PM

Well, it's everyone's dos colones that makes this a fun and interesting forum. All of the different perspective are invaluable, but there's no place for name-calling! Goodness! I'd never heard that expression before! :) Glad it was removed.

No snow here in Oklahoma yet! But finally got below the 80's--I was beginning to wonder if fall would ever arrive and glad for each pretty day we were granted extra!

But thanks, greenfieldhunter. I'll have my hands full trying to live up to that nice classroom teacher image! Thanks for reminding me of how it SHOULD look! :)

BostonGal Nov 17th, 2005 05:58 PM

Percy, thanks for the recommendation. I just picked this up tonight at Borders, can't wait to check it out!!

Percy Nov 17th, 2005 07:08 PM

BostonGal:

Glad you got the book.
I am more than half way through.

This is the format that I used:
1. Read from the beginning to page 51

2. Then Pages 196 to 199 inclusive

3.Then Pages 220 to 223 inclusve

4.The Pages 238 to 271.

This gives you the most general information about Costa Rica...even though you may know most of this alreay ...it is a nice refresher.!

I certainly am not telling you how to read a book(!!)but ...

I have about 8 of these DK books and this is the format that I found works best for me.

Then you can go to the "Costa Rica Area by Area" which starts on Page 50..or go to any area of your immediate interest.

Nice picture on page 52 isn't it.

Nice two -page picture on pages 64-65, right !

shillmac:

hmmmmmm.."finally got below 80", well just for that I am going to send you some frozen snow as soon as it gets here...it will come by Fedex!!!

Goodnight
Percy

faithie Nov 18th, 2005 03:07 AM

We have some snow as well Percy !!! Costa Rica beckons ...

Percy Nov 18th, 2005 07:29 AM

faithie:

Yes I saw on the National CBC news that you have snow.

I cannot believe what good weather we have here(in Alberta) so far atthis time of the year, unlike that in Winnipeg last week.

Your right..it is Costa Rica Time !
