Question about the vine snake..Venomous? It's mouth is so big and I bet anyhthing that we have walked right by one and thought is was just another vine. Would you have to provoke it to get it to react like it did in the video? How about the Tiger striped snake..venomous? That one was a little too close to the Cabina for my liking. Did any of the venomous snakes strike at you? Do you do this as a career or hobby?

Thanks Susie, I'm glad you liked that video :-) I slapped it together too quick and left out a lot of good footage so i think i might redo it.
To answer your questions: The vine snake is totally harmless. One of the guests saw it crawling near the front steps to the reception desk and Philip the super-awesome guide/biologist working there scooped it up and saved it for me because i wasn't around and he knew I'd really appreciate seeing it! He presented it to me in a candy-cane striped bag in the middle of breakfast with plenty of amused onlookers. I moved it into some shrubs on the lawn where i took some quick pics and video and then turned it loose. It took minimal hand waving to get the snake to gape. Philip had asked me to bring the cloth tie that was holding the bag shut back to him, and when i did he told me it was the tie that held the curtains back in his house. Shortly after my girlfriend accused me of having a "man crush" of him... ha ha. Tiger rat snake (Spilotes) is not venomous and super cool. None of the venomous snakes struck at me. I do this as a hobby, but it's probably more correct to call it a life-long passion. I volunteer, conduct studies, give talks locally and I'm even in the process of forming a respectable herpetological society here in Colorado will some friends and professional associates. But mostly i just like to run around and try to see and photograph reptiles and amphibians in the wild for fun. So i think i fit neatly in between someone who does this for a career and a jackass who runs around wrangling snakes. Thanks, Joe |
Joe, Thanks for all the info! Very interesting!! When I went to BdC I wanted to see some snakes but from a distance and I thought I was pretty lucky with the 3 that I found but you really hit the gold mine! I will keep checking YouTude from time to time for your updated video.
We really like Phil alot too!! My husband and I both really enjoyed talking with him and taking his guided tours. Such a smart guy! I hope to see a Vine snake this summer! :) Thanks again and so glad your trip was such a success! Susie |
I just caught the video Joe, very nice.

COfieldHerper: Are you still lurking here on the forums? My husband who is also a herper will be very interested in your photos. Which month were you at Bosque del Cabo?
I am NOT a herper. I love beautiful unspoiled spots though. My husband and I are looking at taking a trip to Bosque del Cabo. I'm a little nervous about what creatures I might find in my bed, besides my husband! :-P If we do decide on Bosque del Cabo, I bet my husband would love to pick your brain. Not sure if you are still here on the forum though. I saw your great photos but not sure which video people are talking about. |
Melissa, I am not sure if Joe (COfieldherper) will see this. So, here is his website which has contact information I believe. He his been very helpful to me and I am sure he would be to you as well.
