You have to just go through the apartment listings and find what you can afford that is located where you want to be. These companies are ones I know or hear the most about.
I have only used Maison Buenos Aires and have no complaints at all !
I would definitely stay in an Apartments BA apt if I did not have a large dog with me..

Palermo is good, once you start looking at the apartments, you will see what kind of choices you have and where you might like to stay..although there is nothing wrong with Palermo!

Hope this helps..

AndrewDavid Aug 19th, 2007 08:11 AM

hi Scarlett, Thanks for your response. Is there a search tool that will locateb addresses/ intersections in BA like the mapquest.com I use in Canada. Allk mapquest gives me is a general map.
thanks,
AndrewDavid

Scarlett Aug 19th, 2007 10:36 AM

Hi !
I bought a nice big map when we were in the States, it was for planning the trip but also for help while we looked at neighborhoods to live in.

That is what I still use..will the maps on the apartment websites not work for you?
I will see what my friend uses for his research..will let you know, til then, this is topped and maybe someone else has ideas :)

drdawggy Aug 20th, 2007 01:20 AM

Many of the apartment websites will link you to a location map.

raquel_z Aug 20th, 2007 05:28 AM

Hello AndrewDavid;
Here a a couple of online maps you can play with...
http://mapa.buenosaires.gov.ar/sig/index.phtml
If you look at the options at the left - "recorrido a pie" will show and give directions you how to walk from A to B. recorrido en auto = driving instructions. if you put the cross strees into "localizador de direcciones" at the bottom left you'll get an area map.

Another interactive map is
http://mapas.argentina.com/

raquel, Thanks for these links

hi Scarlett, I just replied to shortstayba for what appears to be a very nice apartment at Cervino and Ruggieri. Looks like a good location ? What do you think?
I'm also looking at apartmentsba.

Given what the temperature will be like in late dec early jan i'm thinking swimming pool (if I get an apt w/ a pool you get swimming priveleges!!)

thanks

raquel that link works very well.

Scarlett one of the apartmants has a tiny plunge pool. How do you feel about "clothing optional" beach Clubs??? hahah

Scarlett Aug 20th, 2007 06:43 PM

LOL AndrewDavid..thank you..
I think the location sounds good. On my map..it looks like it is about 2 blocks from Libertador and the Palermo Chico area, museums and nice cafes and wonderful parks..

drdawggy Aug 21st, 2007 01:50 AM

Andrew, I have used both the services you are considering and can personally recommend them. You are correct about the location of the shortstayinba apartment. It is part of a complex of apartments with exits on either Ruggieri on one side and Salguero on the other. It is a super apartment with central air conditioning. It is in a fabulous location...as Scarlett notes, just a couple of blocks from Figuero Alcorta mall, MALBA museum and lots of cafes, restaurants and shops. Since you are going in December, it is worth noting that you are within a couple of blocks of some of the best ice cream in Buenos Aires.

AndrewDavid Aug 21st, 2007 07:07 AM

drdawggy,
I am waiting to hear from the short stayinba folks. I think that would be a great spot.so hope they get back to me.
What is BA ice cream gelato like due to italian influence or more like regular creamy

"I scream ,you scream, we all scream for ice cream!"

cheers AndrewDavid

Scarlett Aug 22nd, 2007 05:31 PM

We moved here because we wanted to live in a foriegn country, visited here and fell in love with BsAs .. so here we are...

AndrewDavid Aug 22nd, 2007 07:25 PM

Scarlett Sounds like you've landed on your feet. I lived in Rome for 6 months travel is great eh

Avrooster, I'm in contact w/ byt also thanks for your offer to call, but I'm still narrowing

AndrewDavid

avrooster Aug 23rd, 2007 03:25 AM

The good DrDawggy is more qualified to answer your location question than I am. He should be back here soon. He's probably very busy getting ready to come down here, so please excuse him! LOL!!

Scarlett Aug 23rd, 2007 11:11 AM

We were just in the Ruggieri and Las Heras area today, it is busy and bustling and seems to be fine.
The Parque Las Heras is wonderful, huge and green in the middle of all those busy streets, the zoo and Botanical Gardens are not far..I think it might be fine.
But dr dawggy knows better than I :)

AndrewDavid Aug 23rd, 2007 01:56 PM

thanks Scarlett that sounds great; will wait to hear about some of the addresses from drdawggy

cheers
AndrewDavid

avrooster Aug 23rd, 2007 03:15 PM

I'll call the good doctor's attention to your questions. Such neglect is MOST unlike him. LOL!!

drdawggy Aug 23rd, 2007 05:12 PM

Ruggierei and Las Heras A very nice area. Does the apartment front on Ruggieri or Las Heras? If it is a front facing apartment on Las Heras (frente) and not on a high floor it could be very noisy...if it is on the back (contrafrente) the noise factor is not a problem. Ruggieri is not a very noisy street so even a front facing apartment should not be bad. This location is only a couple of blocks from the short stortstayinba apartment.....

AndrewDavid Aug 28th, 2007 03:22 PM

drdwaggy and scarlett, thanks for comments on location of Ruggierrei and Las Hers . I believe that apt if still available faces Ruggierei.

Could you or others comment on my other choices please as i hope to try and book tomorrow

Guatemala / Malabia
Fitzroy/Cabrera
Austria/Juncal
Paraguay/Arevalo

Thanks to all for your help

cheers

Andrewdavid

ps unfortunately never received a reply ftom shortstayinba

AndrewDavid Aug 29th, 2007 06:14 AM

avrooster Aug 29th, 2007 06:41 AM

I'll remind the good doctor of your question. As I have said before, it is MOST unlike him to delay a reply past dawn of the next day. He must be getting old. LOL!!

AndrewDavid Aug 29th, 2007 07:11 AM

thanks avrooster

expertbue Aug 29th, 2007 10:18 AM

I would stick to Ruggieri and Las Heras location. Of the other four, the best could be Austria y Juncal. The other three are nearer Palermo Soho area, which is very trendy but has very poor transportation to the rest of the city.

AndrewDavid Aug 29th, 2007 04:05 PM

dear expertbue, thanks for your feedback, i'm leaning toward the Austria and Juncal apt.

I'm surprised to hear your comment about the other 3 as thre all look to be within walking distance to Subte stations. Is that not a convenient way to get around the city?

Scarlett Aug 29th, 2007 06:55 PM

AndrewDavid, we ( husband and I ) take taxis everywhere. All over town, there are a gazillion on the streets, you never have to stand and wait more than a couple of minutes for one, they are cheap cheap cheap.
I intend to take the Subte at least once just to see what it is like and buses are easy and cheap too...but the way things have been with us, taxis are the easiest and quickest way to get from Here to There :)

AndrewDavid Aug 31st, 2007 07:19 AM

thanks scarlett,
i believe you moved to BA from NYC right?
when I am in NYC I rarely take taxi's except late at night because they just sit in traffic. I'm always on the Subway. Here in Victoria not much traffic so anything goes.
I am sorry no one commented on all of my proposed apartment locations esp those in Palermo so I'll have to just trust the folks at apartmentsba as I want to book this morning

Since it will be hot and muggy I looked at places w/ pools as I thought a dip would be nice after being out all day.

I am working to purge the italian from my spanish so people can understand me!
cheers

raquel_z Aug 31st, 2007 09:59 AM

AndrewDavid,

None of the apartments that you are mentioning are superclose to the subte. But I guess I was spoiled. The apartment I rented was about 40 metres from the Bulnes stop.

The subte is definitely a good way to get around in Bs As. It is very cheap in price and relatively efficient. But there are limitations. The area it covers is not nearly as extensive as the NYC subway. So you may often find you have to supplement the subte with other means of transportation - be it colectivo, taxi or walking. Also it only runs till just after 10.30 at night. Also - avoid it at rush hour since it will be very very packed.

If you plan on using public transportation, also consider the colectivos (public buses) The network is very extensive and you can usually find a bus that will get you to where you want to go. Get yourself a copy of the Guia T, which you can buy at the kiosks around Bs. As. Once you get the hang of how to use it, it is invaluable.

But since you are only staying in Bs As for a short time, you may find that taxis and walking turn out to be the most convenient.

AndrewDavid Aug 31st, 2007 02:53 PM

Raquel, thanks for your response. I normally like to experience a city on my feet. as an architect, i am always happy wandering about and looking at buildings, taking in the streetscape and hanging around in cafes, meeting people I speak some spanish now mixed up w/ my italian so hope i can still converse un poco en espanol .
As i didn't hear any feedback from folks on the locations I proposed I rented an apartment in a new building at Guatemala and Armenia this morning. This appears to be 5 blocks from Subte stop Scalabrini Ortiz and 7 blocks from Plaza Italia, unless my map has lied to me.

cheers
AndrewDavid

Scarlett Aug 31st, 2007 03:11 PM

We moved from NYC to Fl to Or to BsAs all in about 3 years..
We had a car in NY and I did take taxis a lot..but here, it is quite different. NYC is tiny compared to the size of the city of BA and you can take a taxi from Palermo to Recoleta for $3-$4.
For strolling and browsing and exploring, we walk, when we want to get to a particular destination , we take a taxi.
But I do want to take the Subte..I take them in Paris and London, just not NY lol...
It was such a beautiful day today in Buenos Aires. The sun shone, the skies are an amazing blue and not one cloud. It got up to about 65 which is quite a nice temp for a winter day :D

AndrewDavid Aug 31st, 2007 09:39 PM

hi all now that i'v ebooked can anyone comment on the location at Guatemala and Armenia. The apartment is on the 7th floor . will that be a noisy spot?
Thanks

Scarlett: Subte tix my treat if you are still a Subte version at the end of december

cheers A/D

AndrewDavid Aug 31st, 2007 09:39 PM

that was supposed to read Subte virgin! lol
