Your advice requested on whether it would be OK to post this here...

Hi Friends

I want to ask your advice...

My mum retires today... Over the last few weeks my husband and I have been developing a web site for her which allows her to display and share her Indian recipes. She wants it to be a useful site, and we have therefore designed it to be as user friendly as we can.

Anyway, having never designed a web site before we are also really excited about it.

It is basically a non commercial site of recipes (mostly Indian but we are hoping it will become more international once it has been going for a few months and people have sent in more recipes).

My question is, would it be appropriate for me to share the URL here? I know how many of you share my passion for food and felt there would be people here who would really enjoy it.

I repeat it is a non commercial, hobby site created for my mum, designed by me and coded up and created by my husband...

Many thanks for your advice, as always...

Kavey

Yes please Kavey do share. I'm making curry tomorrow with the curry paste I bought two weeks ago at Fortnum & Mason!

Kavey, please do. I love Indian food! I had quite a bit of it while in London (I went to a friend's wedding there - they are from India, in fact their Dad is a diplomat.)

can't get enough of it. There was a sort of cheese we had as an appetizer - hard to describe: white, but coated/rolled/baked or something - in some red/orange spices? wow!

Well Kavey since you, your sister and myself all share the same birthday... of course, any not-for profit thing is fine!

Lily Jun 1st, 2001 04:49 PM

Please share! I love Indian food more than any other and am very excited about the possibility of getting some wonderfully authentic recipes. Thanks!

Kavey,
why not!
I would get bored if I saw the site being posted as a new thread on a daily basis,
(stay tuned for the next commercial)
But, please post it, I am sure many oif us would love to visit it.
Thanks!
Yes, please post it.
Enjoy reading anthing about food.

Sure do, and on the Asian forum too, please. I wish your mum a long and pleasant retirement. You might also post her site to http://www.pcfl.net/channels/food/indian.htm

Thanks everyone...

I feel much reassured about sharing it... (I didnt want to be the subject of some of the nasty flame attacks we have had here recently)

The site is at www.mamtaskitchen.com and I hope you enjoy it.

I have tried the tandoori chicken, the mince kebabs and the chickpea curry and was very reassured that they came out like my mum's.

Please please sign the visitor's book and email my mum to let her know the results of any recipes you try and any comments...

It may be difficult to find some of the ingredients, I am looking for some reliable internet vendors, but in the mean time you can email mum and ask her which things can be safely subsituted and which musnt be missed out in a given recipe...

Thanks...

(PS Of course I wont be posting this continously... but I will pop over to the Asia board as you suggest)...

Kavey

PS. Please let me know what you think of it...

Thanks

Kavey

looking forward to seeing your mom's web site. maybe my husband will allow me to cook indian food again, last time i popped mustard seeds all over the kitchen and it took him an hour to clean and he ran out of hot water. hopefully i'll have better results with your mom's recipes.

Kavey Jun 3rd, 2001 01:30 AM

Dana,

An hour to clean the kitchen or himself?

A lot of them are very straighforward... I liked the ones I did because after peeling a few ingredients first, most of them, whole spices and all, went into the food processor. This is how the marinade for tandoori chicken was made and also how all the ingredients to be mixed into the mince meat for the kebabs were processed...Nice and quick.

THe only thing you need to do for some of them is make your own garam masala rather than the shop brought, and we have put the recipe for that on the site too...

Kavey

Kavey:

Thanks for sharing a wonderful site. By far, this is one of the best postings on "unrelated to travel" issues. I love Indian food --- and I'll be able to do these recipes justice.
rlk Jun 3rd, 2001 07:25 AM

- meant to say, I HOPE that I can do these recipes justice.
Paule Jun 3rd, 2001 07:44 AM

I LOVE the site. I am a big fan of Indian food, and love to cook it, too. My only question:is there a simple way to convert the metric weights (grams) to the measurements that I am used to?
The recipes are great, though, and a lot less complicated than the ones I've seen in my Indian cookbooks!
Paule

oh, this measurement-challnged country we live in Jun 3rd, 2001 07:54 AM

as was recently posted here on another thread, 4 meters = one quart. you can do the rest in your head.

jk...
kam Jun 3rd, 2001 12:27 PM

Thank you, thank you, Kavey! The very best recipes are the ones you get from mum!

Kavey Jun 3rd, 2001 01:13 PM

I am soooooooooooooooo pleased that you all like the site...

It's been a real learning experience but a labour of love and we have designed it by thinking about what we like and dont like about other sites.

I think my mum has some stuff about converting measures for when she used American recipes, I will ask her for them and put them onto the site...

It has been a real pleasure to see our logs showing visitors from as far afield as America, Australia, and the Czech Republic to name a few...

Please let your friends know about the site and please take a moment to return to the site and sign the visitor's book or comment in the Ideas discussion thread...

Both just your comments on the site (so my mum and husband can see them too) and also your successes with the recipes...

I am really really pleased you like it...

Kavey
