I'll get the ball rolling with a minority opinion: that is really a crummy market of very little interest.

Do you think that renovation works at the Crowne Plaza would still be continuing in August?

I don't think it's a minority opinion. It's hardly a market at all. And the neighborhood right around it is pretty dull, too.

We are not staying near Enfants Rouges for the neighbourhood. We want to be close to both the Marais, which we don't think dull, and Canal St Martin. We can both easily walk 6 miles at a clip. I can easily run 6 miles.

Maybe you don't care for shopping at Sandro or L'Occitane, but I rather enjoy it. I also love Place des Voges.

Yes, but most Marais lovers are enthralled by it because it is the only permanent market in the Marais. They don't know that it is the worst market in Paris since they don't get around much.

I'm not a market person, but I'd stay in that location too. I think it's convenient. You can have coffee and pastries at Jacques Genin nearby.

I'll agree with the above. It's mostly a food place of bitsy size set up for tourists so they can think that they're "experiencing" a Paris market. And the Canal Saint-Martin in August becomes Paris' open air urinal.

Although your focus has shifted elsewhere, I've stayed at the Renaissance Place Republique and it is fine. A bit set off from the main traffic and short walk down to the upper Marais and good transport links eleswhere. It is, however, not a charming exterior.

Oh, it's not so bad now that they have installed those Dutch urinal tripods in Canal Saint Martin beerland.

Gooster, if you are still calling it the Renaissance, you must not have seen the Crowne Plaza since the total renovation of Place de la République.

They still allow foie gras, produced from abusing animals - banned in California - give animals a break - forego the foie gras - don't sanction animal torture!

Entendu, but you don't need to be near the Marché des Enfants Rouges to accomplish that. Closer to the Place de la République is much livelier and equally accessible to both the Marais and the canal.

I adore the Marché des Enfants Rouges for its prepared food vendors. The highlight is for a galette cornet - heaven in your hand. He's also opened a little freestanding shop around the corner on rue Charlot and both locations stay quite busy. The neighborhood is quite convenient, have stayed nearby a few times and found it enjoyable. Rue de Bretagne is lined with all sorts of shops and cafes, none of which are stellar but all quite adequate. I do recall a particularly wonderful poulet rôti vendor and a nice cheese shop on the same side of the street as the marché. Can't comment on hotels as we were in apartments.

kerouac the Renaissance I'm referring to is the Renaissance Republique at 40 Rene Boulanger, which is off the place; I believe it is at the opposite end of the Crowne Plaza. It's close to the start of Rue de Temple.

Seamus, you ae so right. I had forgotten about Miam Miam, perhaps because it was closed when we were in Paris last summer. That does, in and of itself, make a trip to the Marché des Enfants Rouges worth it!

And Chez Prune - oh, so avant-garde!

I have friends who stayed at Le Citizen and loved it. And I have eaten at Prune and didn't like it at all.

We haven't eaten at Prune, but we've stopped by there for an apéro and enjoyed the vibe.
