Winte rtrip - one day open

I will be in York on Sunday February 8th. I have been to York a few times and have seen most of whats to visit. So, any recommendations to see in or out of York using public transportation.

I don't know if this would interest you but Eden Camp in Malton has a museum on Britain's war experience...WWII. I've haven't been, only heard about it. I believe you can catch a coastliner bus from the train station.

The website for the bus is www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk For Eden Camp www. edencamp.co.uk

There's always Whitby if you haven't been there yet.

Thanks for the suggestions, however, done both. Whitby by Coastliner and Eden Camp by train to Malton, then bud. Horrid day with high wind and snow/rain. Still looking.

Have you been to Durham? It's doable as a daytrip from York, and compact. I love Durham.

This might help - from the San Francisco Chronicle a few weeks ago:

How about Beverley, for its two fine medieval churches, the Minster and St. Mary's, a number of excellent pubs and a generally pleasant out-of-the-way market town?

Bus (East Yorkshire bus company)is normally the best way to get there, but service is limited on Sunday. I presume that you will have your usual railpass, so train to Hull, changing there to Beverley, would be the way to go.

Thanks again. Done Durham, loved it. Ron, Beverley looks interesting and yes to the rail pass. If nothing else I just might do things in York again.

There are frequent trains from York to Leeds. Maybe not the first place you would think of visiting as a tourist but lots to see and do. Superb shopping, art galleries and museums. Royal Armouries, Thackray Museum for example. It’s a really lively and vibrant city – I work there and love it. Lots more info here -

Alternatively you could catch a train to the spa town of Harrogate – again good shopping, nice gardens if the weather is fine, Pump Room Museum, Mercer Art Gallery etc. Or perhaps the famous Turkish baths?

Morgana, I hadn't though about Leeds. I know the old armor from the Tower is on display and a military museum as well. Thank you, I am now going to check it out.

Meant to add - there is a new museum in Leeds too. Haven't yet been but I hear good reports from those who have. It's about 7 or 8 mins walk from the railway station.

I have been to the Armouries though - you could spend hours in there, excellent place.
