Hi Mimi
What a super thread. It is facinating to put some 'flesh' on the bones of some of the regular contributors.
I was born in Southport in lancashire on the coast of north west England. Ive lived in Liverpool,London and now for many years in a small village in Shropshire in the 'midwest' of the UK.
I also spend as much time as I can at our place by the sea in another even smaller village called Torcross in Devon south west England. So you can see where I get my 'handle'.
By the way I really enjoy travel and have visited the states many times and love the american people and the lovely weather. I also get to do some serious shopping as you can imagine we're a bit short of shopping malls where I live.
Thanks for the posting

margaretc Jul 19th, 2004 06:48 PM

I'm new to this board. I was born in Sydney Australia and now live on the Central Coast about an hour north of Sydney and it's a very beautiful place to live. We have just had our first taste of winter this weekend but mostly our days are sunny and warm. Unfortunately we are also in a state of drought and desperately need some good rain.

cigalechanta Jul 19th, 2004 07:05 PM

margaret, I wish i could send you some rain. we have had too much. My tiny garden is now dead from too much rain and slug infestation. Worse, my potted cooking herbs did not survive.

Countrymouse Jul 19th, 2004 11:45 PM

Hi Cigalechanta it's Countrymouse.
If it's rain you want you should visit the UK right now! We've got lots of it and my poor geraniums are drowning!
It only seems to be at night though at the moment so that's OK because if it didnt rain so much our countryside wouldnt be so beautiful. As you may have guessed we British are obsessed by the weather, which is why so many of us go to the states every year to get some guaranteed sunshine. I'll try and blow some rain your way if it will help.
Bye CM

Has anyone actually read all these posts? And is anyone headed for the Ozarks? That's where we live now, in Sspringfield, MO, though was born in Chicago and lived in Illinois and Middle West. Off soon to see family in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Amesbury, MA.

BTW, anyone now living in Hungary or Poland where we hope to travel next year?

Wow, I originally replied to this message on 8/14/2001. A lot has changed for me since then... I've since gotten married and moved to Atlanta, Georgia!

Countrymouse Jul 20th, 2004 08:04 PM

Dear cigalechanta
Sorry about your herbs,of course when I re read the postings it was margaret who had the drought.
We used to have a terrible problem with slugs and snails until our neighbour went all minamilist and replaced their lawns with gravel and since then weve had far less. I put out jam jars with a little beer or sugar water in the bottom which is quite an effective eco friendly way of keeping them at bay.
Plum island sounds interesting, is that in the Boston area?
Thanks for the welcome

Neil-Oz

I, too, was interested to hear that the northern hemisphere was cooler than the southern hemisphere - that's a bit unexpected at this time of year. Mind you - it could be right. My Swedish friends tell me it's cooler there than in Sydney, and it's midwinter here (as you surely know!)

Born in Sydney, live in Sydney, work in Sydney, and escape to Europe as often as possible, to try some of that cooler weather! ;)

Countrymouse Jul 21st, 2004 08:08 AM

Hi margo oz
Isn't it true that the grass always seems greener in the other field. Here in the UK we are always prayng for hot weather and there you are wanting to come to europe to cool down. It has been a very disappointing summer here. We had a spell of gorgeous weather in late May early June and we all started buying barbies and getting very excited, but it petered out quite soon and since then weve had a lot of rain and much cooler days than last year. When you consider the british summer only usually lasts until the end of august it wont be long at this rate until we're all back in our thermal draws!
I eagerly await e-mails from my friends in Melbourne to hear of their fabulous trips to the beach and barbies round their pool, when we're freezing over here. Friends in the UK who have pools only seem to be able to use them about twice a year these days!
This is why so many of my compatriots emigrate to your sunny shores every year. We have a place right by the sea in Devon and even on the hottest days the sea is freezing and only the hardiest souls go in. I'm proud to say i'm one of them, but there agin I'cve always been a bit mad!
Hope you are enjoying yourself over there whatever your weather.
Bye CM
