Aged 7 and 33 countries (entered by his very lucky mum)
Otto and his sister Jess travelled the world with us when they were 1 and 3 for two years. We hit 33 countries and yes it was amazing.

Wow. This is a really old thread. Not many who posted 16+ years ago are still posting. Robespierre!!

TO JEAN
As you see, I do my best to get the thread older! HOW TO COUNT COUNTRIES My proposal: count the country which exists today in he territory you traveled through in the past: If you traveled from Skopje via Raska - Andrievica - Titograd - Mostar - Sarajevo - Zagreb to Ljubljana without leaving the FNRJ (Federal Democratic Republic of Yougoslavia), you count 6 countries. Furthermore, I wouldn't count the countries where I passed through by train or bus without stopping. So, for me, a overnight train ride from Vienna to Zurich wouldn't include a visit of Germany and Liechtenstein,. a taxi service ride from Beirut to Jerusalem East (before 1967) wouldn't include a visit of Syria, a ferry ride from Kas (Turkey) to Rhodos with a flight home from Rhodos airport the same day wouldnt include a visit of Greece. |
I am currently traveling in Antarctica. This is an expedition cruise so we are going on land. We all know Antarctica is a continent, but does it count as a country?

Posts topping this 2007 thread have consistently been deleted over the years. But after review, its agreed the topic continues to be interesting so those posts have been reinstated

Interesting topic... but does this include business travel as well as recreational travel? Also does a cruise stop constitute a visit? With that a one day or several hour cruise stop are included in my list such as a stop in Costa Rica but that is different than staying someplace for a week or so and touring. While I travelled quite a lot throughout the U.S in my career over many years, I can recall only one trip to Canada as a strictly business trip, but have been to Canada many times in my life, as a child with my parents, on several trips with my husband and at least one trip with our family when our daughters were younger.
With that, I am retired and I am 74, Here goes: Home country - U.S Canada- many times - Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick Mexico- cruise stops The Bahamas - Grand Bahama Island (twice) Turks and Caicos (cruise stop) Panama Canal and Panama (cruise stop) Costa Rica (cruise stop) Bermuda Barbados Dominican Republic England (4 times) Scotland The Netherlands (3 times) France (3 times) Morocco Spain (4 times) Portugal Israel (3 times) Italy Switzerland Austria (2 times) Czech Republic Denmark Germany - was still West Germany and East Germany when I was there in 1970 and visited both- East Berlin was a day trip from West Berlin but train goes through East Germany to get to Berlin Belgium (2 times) Aruba and Curacao (2 times) Country known as Yugoslavia when I was there in 1970 - was in both Belgrade and Dubrovnik Would be interested as well to the number of states visited |
Don't have a firm number but have probably actually 'visited' 30+ US states and I need to catch up with a lot of you. (I'll have to try and add them up . . . )
Countries: Canada Mexico Guam (not a 'country' but what the hey) Taiwan Japan Korea, Hong Kong Thailand Germany Belgium Netherlands USSR and Russia Austria Italy Greece France Spain Norway Sweden Finland Ireland Hungary Poland The UK (I'm counting as 6 countries - England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, the Channel Islands) Peru Ecuador Chile Costa Rica Panama Bermuda Puerto Rico |
Not in any particular order:
England home country Ireland Scotland Wales USA Mexico Bermuda Cayman islands Puerto Rico France Spain Italy Portugal Azores Canary Islands Madeira Netherlands Germany Austria Poland USSR Turkey Greece incl islands Morocco Egypt South Africa Indonesia Singapore Monaco Switzerland Croatia Denmark Iceland Malta Gibraltar Czech Republic Belgium I think that's 37 or so. Clearly got some way to go! Lots of islands belonging to Greece and Spain to add but not separately. |
39.
All of Africa, Asia and Oceania before I was 30. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0e097d156a.jpg |
Roughly in the order of my first visits
UK - my first trip abroad Netherlands France Belgium (just passed through with a train) Austria Slovakia Hungary The Czech Republic Germany Greece Just 10 but lots of people I know travel to 2-3 destinations only. We're not a very rich country. ;) So many to go! I hope one day to be able to experience all these: Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Slovenia, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Romania, Albania, Italy, Turkey, Poland, Ukraine, the Baltics, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, San Marino and Gibraltar. Out of Europe I want to experience Latin America, the USA, Australia, India and the Far East the most. |
So I looked at additional posts and I see that several incude Puerto Rico as a country but I consider it part of the U.S so didn't include it on my initial post. Have been to Puerto Rico twice. I realize that I also left out Grand Cayman which was a cruise stop.
For the U.S I have visited 39 of the 50 states. Still need to get to Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama as well as West Virginia Multiple visits to many of the 39 states both for family vacations and for business travel. |
