If you want to hike, head to Garmisch or Mittenwald. Lots of big mountains, beautiful scenery and hiking trails there!

We just got back from Munich 2 weeks ago.
Other than being miserably HOT --it was a great place! Wish I had another week...we only had 3 nights. Mike's Bike Tour was a lot of fun. It is daylight til really late so you can easily get in daytime activities and then catch the 4pm ride. We did the Dachau tour in the morning with them then the afternoon bike ride. Neuschwanstein was well worth it...we did the combo and saw both castles. Plus the drive out was nice and relaxing. Takes you off the beaten path a bit and we saw picture perfect Bavarian homes and farms! English Garden was beautiful! Must check out the place where you can SURF in the river! (it was a stop on the Mike's Bike Tour). Deutsches Museum was good BUT very very BIG and could take DAYS...so pick and choose what you like! With only 3-4 days it would be very difficult to spend quality time in Munich and take the time to see Neuschwanstein. SO if you are driving I would possibly head that way out of town on my way to another location, spend the night in the area and then move on instead of taking a day away from Munich. We missed sooo much....Nymphenburg, Olympic Park, Residenz, more shopping time in the Marienplatz.... ;-) have a great time! |
Munich to me, though a pleasant city, pales in comparison to so many other European towns. Americans always put Munich in their list of top towns to go to because they've heard about it probably because so many American servicemen are stationed in the area. I've been going to Munich now many times since the late 1960s and the city was largely destroyed in the war and haphazzardly rebuilt at first, though it's now been gussied up so it's cute once again if Ersatz cute. If bent on staying here 3-4 days, I'd do a few day trips, like to Salzburg Austria 1.5 hrs by rail, a gem of a Baroque city or to Fussen to see Mad Ludwig's Neuschwanstein Castle or to his Herrenchiemsee castle on an island in a lake - the Versailles of Bavaria, actually patterned after Versaille or Garmisch-Partenkirchen to climb the Zugspitze. The bare fact is that the most interesting sight in Munich to many will be the Englischer Gartens on a warm day when, as the tradition has it for many years now, there are many nudists laying and prancing around. Check your American puritanical culture at the entrance!

Schloss Nymphenburg is very interesting--well worth several hours. Certainly worth 3 days on its own. We filled 3 days there easily--much has already been mentioned. A nice variety of art and theme museums. Of course, I'm just a foolish American.

I go along with the Mikes Bikes tour recommendation whole heartedly. I know I'll irratate some people by saying this but I did not find Dachau moving with the exception of the movie. It's almost too sterile now to visualize the horrific things that went on there.
