I was in Lucerne for several nights last May. You can read my trip report and see my photos at

We stayed at Des Alpes and liked it. Great location.

Maybe this will help:

When will you be there? I'll see if there are any interesting events going on for you.

Reservations are not needed (I'm not sure if they are even taken) for boat rides and cable cars.

Looked at the Rigi, Central Switzerland and Luzern sites, but except for the daily luncheon on the ferries and Tuesday's fish market in Lucerne, I didn't find any other exciting folklore events.

We're having perfect weather right now. Way too warm but great for Fasnacht.

Lucerne is a very pleasant place. It was our last stop after a tour of Italy and students loved it. It is a good place to not be rushed. The train station is wonderful. You can also take a train for a short trip to a little village named Engleberg. Just remember that they take one of those long European lunch breaks so get there by 9 or 10.

We took the boat cruise from Lucerne to Weggis and back. We bought our tickets just before boarding - there were no reservations - you sit anywhere. This was Oct-2003.
