We really liked Maccheroni, too. It seemed to be full of locals. It was atmospheric and crowded. somewhat loud. Not expensive "fine" dining, per se. Good everyday type menu.

I enjoyed Pierluigi very much.

I was less impressed, however, with Colline Emiliane. I think they got a number of favorable write-ups a while back (from various sources) and have been resting on their laurels ever since, which is most unfortunate.

I also very much enjoyed Vegetarian Margutta, although I'm not a vegetarian. It, too, is not far from Piazza del Popolo. Brilliant, inventive menu, lovely service and romantic ambiance for a Friday evening dinner.
