They have filmed "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind. This takes place in 18th century France. The "nose" and killer is played by a Frenchman but it stars Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman-strange casting!

I think maybe Johnny Depp for Orwell in Down & Out.
|
Oooh, Johnny Depp is a good choice.
I would love to see Barbaby Rudge made into a movie. I think it is so cinematic, but I don't think there has ever been a filmed version. Romance, riots, mystery, the city, the country... I think BR would make a great film. Another Orwell pick: The Clegryman's Daughter. It would make a good vehicle for a great young actress. |
I'd really like to see Cara Black's female detective who is the star of her books that take place in all the Paris arrondissements.

Well all you literary types can fantasize all you want but my pick would be one of the better Fodorite trip reports...they have everything: romance, angst, tension, drama, shopping, mysterious hotels, missing bellmen, imperious concierges, crooked restaurant owners, tourist traps which swallow people whole, contaminated airliner drinking water, people forced to wear bizarre shoes, fabulous linens, laptops with a mind of their own, and toddlers climbing the Eiffel Tower.
Question is who will play the toddler. |
You're right Dukey, don't forget Kavey's one throwing bras from the bus, elviras many'chaotic wonderful travels nor Mina's.
|
While we're in an Orwell vein: Such, Such Were the Joys.
While I'm in an English schoolboy vein: Kipling's Stalky & Co. |
Yes, Dukey, you've got something there. I would vote for Barb's trip to become a movie.
|
"The Broker" by John Grisham
|
While I'm in an English schoolboy vein: Kipling's Stalky & Co.>>>>>
We've had that as a TV series. |
Johnny Depp is one of the few current actors that has much talent. He might do well as Orwell. Liam Neeson might be a good fight as well. For that matter, so might Russell Crowe. The problem is that how do you justify paying big-time actors their big money with a film that might not net much. DOWN AND OUT would have a limited appeal.

George Orswell didn't exactly look like Johnny depp though did he?
More like Wilfred Bramble* *Ask a passing brit about Steptoe and Son. |
