Since by adding something to a post you bring it up to the top of the list... adding a reply with TOPPING does exactly that!

RonZ Aug 15th, 2003 06:07 AM

It means answering a thread to bring it to the top of the list---either to give it another chance, or to save it for future reference. You can recall it by clicking on your screen name.

Oops, sorry, wrong link.

TOPPING!

British computer designer Edgar C. Topping was one of the original developers of the software systems used in message board forums such as this.
Years ago newly posted messages would appear at the top of the list. Dr. Topping felt that this was unfair to the original posters. He rewrote the software placing new posts below the older ones.
These days we just refer to it as " topping".
Dr. Topping passed away in 1997 and is buried in Our Lady of Posts churchyard in West Baconshire.

I thought topping was what you put on your ice cream...chocolate syrup, nuts, sprinkles, etc. ;-)

FainaAgain Aug 15th, 2003 09:07 AM

No, Queen, it's the icing on the cake! Unless somebody licked it off, of course :)

LeCanard Aug 15th, 2003 10:09 AM

I had some topping experiences at pizza hut...

If it's not a village in the Cotswolds, it should be.

JES Aug 18th, 2003 03:14 PM

Thank you all. I feel much better--and will now start using it!

rex Aug 18th, 2003 03:31 PM

One thing that may have not been coveyed was that it has almost become obsolete to NEED to "top" old threads since it has become so easy to cite the URL to take you there.

An unanswered question might still "deserve" to be topped if it has no replies - - but even then, you might do well to "disguise" the topping by adding some additional info.

Best wishes,

Rex

p.s. Didn't I already post to this thread once before - - with a "welcome back" greeting to surlok? Was that removed, or is my memory faulty? And why would it have been removed?

Intrepid Aug 18th, 2003 04:32 PM

The only other definition of "topping" that hasn't been mentioned would not be appropriate for a polite group of folks such as frequent this board!

Digital_Traveler Aug 18th, 2003 06:42 PM

Intrepid,

now you're talking MY LANGUAGE!

;)

Clifton Aug 18th, 2003 06:46 PM

Just be careful. Too much topping can make for a snug fit in coach.

jimily Aug 18th, 2003 06:50 PM

Thank you for asking. I've wondered for the past 6 months since I found this board.
