Would you walk around your home town in a Tuxedo?
|
No, but I do walk around in my kilt and a polo shirt. It's also "just" a garment, and can be worn anywhere you would wear trousers...
|
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
|
Kilts are generally only worn at special occasions (like weddings) or to perform in like a costume. My Scottish friend wears his on occasions that people in North America would wear a tux. People don't just walk around town in a kilt (from what I have seen...) so that would be a fairly strange thing to do...

Nytraveler, a kilt is not a plaid. A plaid is not a tartan. Perhaps you meant to say the Wallace tartan pattern is a great one.
Kilts and plaids are items of clothing. A tartan is a pattern. |
Not sure about the hire costs these days, but you might be interested to hear just how expensive a full formal Highland outfit costs to buy outright. I bought mine for my wedding 13 years ago and it cost circa £850 at the time (my wife likes to remind me this was a LOT more than her wedding dress!), so I wouldn't be surprised if they were over £1000 these days. The "full kit" takes ages to put on and consists of:-
Black brogues with extra long laces (to wrap round the hose) Long socks (hose) with flashes Sgian dhu (I've got a real one with a sharp blade which is classified as an offensive weapon outside Scotland :) - in England they hire them out with plastic replicas!) Kilt in my clan's modern dress tartan (there are several other variants on this particlar tartan - Hunting and Ancient) Kilt pin with clan coat of arms Sporran Dress Shirt with clan coat of arms cufflinks Black Bow-tie Waistcoat Prince Charlie Jacket It looks amazing but sadly I only get to wear it at family weddings or university reunion balls (not been to either for quite a while). |
Weird how people think kilts aren't worn every day If you go into the highlands, you'll come across people wearing the kilt as an ordinary item of clothing.
I used to study in Edinburgh, which means going to lots and lots of ceilidhs. So much better in a kilt. Everyday kilt wear is the kilt, sporran, belt, kiltpin, hose and ordinary brogues/shoes. Much of today's formal highland dress is an invention. The brogues with open tops are nonsensical for ordinary use. @Gordon_R, such a pity you don't wear the kilt on its own more often. |
Sorry if used plaid incorrectly - we use it to describe any plaid pattern - tartan or not.
|
I much prefer kilts worn with no flimflam - just laced-up boots like workboots and a casual top - a black leather jacket would be the icing on the cake!

What the hell, let him wear it but make sure you walk 10 paces behind him so you can join in the laughter.
I think he should also wear white gym shoes and cart a humongous (sp) video camera diagonally across his body. Please post photos when you get back! |
last time I hired a Kilt outfit for a wedding it cost £80 for a weekend and that was nearly 3 years ago.
You will se a few folk wearing the outfit but only if they are going to a special event or the busking pipers, during the graduation times then lots of students wearing them and you will see a few locals wearing them as normal day wear but they are the exception not the norm. You do sometimes see groups of foreign students wearing the cheap £24.99 kilts from the tartan tat shops, one shower of rain and these become nothing more than rags. |
Went to a meeting today.
Guy in a suit jacket and matching grey pinstripe kilt. Didn't say anything. Just thought...Hmmm! |
Where was that bendigo? What type of business?
|
Saw a pinstripe kilt in a shop window just yesterday. My own kilt is very heavy wool. Black leather kilts are seen occasionally.
|
Did our former First Minister Jack McConnel not once wear a punstriped Kilt at some big do a number of years back

yes I have found it.My friends have been instructed to just shoot me if I am ever seen wearing anything like this, no need to warn me just put me out of my obvious misery. |
Some joker told me that with me being only half Scottish, I was only entitled to wear a mini kilt .... I am still recovering from the embarrassment

You could be your own version of a Babushka Doll:

A University, Australia |
Funny bendigo, I was thinking of an advertising agency or some kind of arts related business but I guess odd ball University professors would also fit the bill.
Why someone in Australia (other than in a pipe band) would be wearing a kilt though really is amusing. |
